Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I try to go once a week, usually first thing Saturday morning, leaving at least the three oldest at home with dh. Sometimes a quick mid-week stop at the store is inevitable and I end up going with all of the dc.

I have used Safeway.com when hugely pregnant and newly post-partum, and it is worth every cent of the delivery fee. However, I don't use the service all the time because I prefer to buy the bulk of my groceries at Trader Joe's.

Hi Rebecca!!!
I do the shopping during the week! Dh might pick something up on his way home from work-but not often. My kids ride to the store with me then I leave them in the Activity Center. They love it there-yes, L does go, doesn't speak but likes it. The store has a few wonderful workers there(usually the same 2-3) who play and do crafts with them. There are no videos or video games there-makes me love it too! I shop alone--and maybe take 5 minutes to read the paper
I shop weekly but do my menu for 2 weeks at a time. The first week of the menu I pick up everything I can for both weeks. It is my long shop. The next week is a short shop and is just things like fruits, veggies and dairy. Sometimes I might use canned and &/or frozen and skip a week, but not often-usually in winter
Hope you all have a nice Christmas--see you next year!
Anne

How do you handle grocery shopping in your household? Who does the shopping? Do you bring all the kids? How often do you go?

I do.

Dh is good about calling before he leaves work and asking if I need something from the store...usually bread and/or milk.

But I've always done the shopping...usually with all the children.

I use to limit it to twice a week. Now that I don't have a little one, it's very easy to go almost every other day.    But my cart isn't as loaded down as it was when I was going twice a week.

i go once a week to a farm's market type store and take all 4 kids. sometimes the oldest 2 are in art class and i just have the youngest two. i tend to make my meals around those foods because they are seasonal foods. i often need an item or two during the week and my dh will stop by the grocery to pick up whatever i'm missing.

Meredith, you're in IDAHO!?!? Why, we're practically neighbors! Major shopping we try to do twice a month like Ruth. My husband does the bulk shopping. I do odds and ends shopping, usually with all the kids. If I know it's going to be a very short trip, I let my oldest babysit the littlies.

I am so jealous, MacBeth and all you other online shoppers!

We actually have a grocery store within 1/8 of a mile of our house but it does not have much in the way of produce. It is a great place to stop if you need a half gallon of milk ($.99!) but not much else.

My goal is out by 7 and home by 8:30, but I tend to get out later than that, and then to tack on a run to the library, the post office, the (ahem) craft store ... Of course then I'm not home until lunchtime and I'm beat for the rest of the day.

Dawn, this is how I have been feeling every time I go out on errand day...like I need a really long nap afterwards! Glad to know I am not the only one!

My main challenge is getting enough fruits and vegetables -- buying enough for 8 people and keeping it fresh for long enough to last till the next trip to town.

I am finding that we simply don't have refrigerator or counter space for all the produce either. We eat a lot of fruit and vegetables. Breakfast is mainly fruit and protein, snacks are fruits or veggies, then I usually have raw veggies with lunch and some veggie cooked with dinner. Though I am only buying for six people, it might be a good idea for me to schedule in a mid week run for fresh fruits and veggies because by the end of the week, there are none left.

Thanks for all your responses, I am revamping a lot around here and am grateful for your ideas.

I type up the menu and then type a grocery list from that. Saving these so it makes it simple for the next time.

Dh does the shopping most of the time, sometimes taking some of the children, he shops late at night somewhere between 7-8 till9pm. It is very quite then and he can get shopping down in under an hour, this lasts us for roughly 3-4 weeks.

In between I shop for fresh fruit and vegies and milk and bread once a week at the fruit market. We have just moved out of town though and dont have a pantry so will have to shop more frequently and i'm not looking forward to it
