Katherine:
I purchased 2 different e-books/e-files from the Simply Charlotte Mason website. They were not workbooks, but each is well over 100 pages and the cost was 9.95 per book. Only one of them gave me an option of buying a hard book, and that would have been 19.95, don't remember if that incuded shipping.
I know if I was not an honest person I could email the files to others. I don't recall any type of a copyright notice with the order, but I am sure there is one.
I can't wait for them, whatever format you go with.

That surprises me that the e-file was cheaper than the hardcopy. I know they cut back on printing costs in an electronic version, but when you buy an e-file you're making a one time, but multiple use purchase. Hmmm. Interesting.
How does this sound for an alternative for those who want to have copies for do-overs...the option of buying the pages in loose leaf packets or spiral bound? Like the way Peace Hill Press is selling The Story of the World activity pages. I'm the kind of person who likes having books in my hands, but I understand the convenience of being able to stick a page in a notebook (or having perfectionist kiddos who want a chance for a do-over).

At Evans-Moore the cost for an e-file is exactly the same as the cost of a hard copy. I always thought this was strange since it would save on printing and shipping costs, but now I understand the concern.
I also am interested (just getting here late because we've been without power for 6 days...)

I like having books in my hands, but it is nice to be able to save papers in a notebook.

I'd prefer spiral bound as with this you can still lay it flat to get re-do copies and yet not have loose paper that gets lost in piles. Is your preference for us to purchase per child or per family? I understand the point of either and would abide by whichever. Whatever you do, be sure to clearly indicate copyright - ie no copying permitted, for use within your family only, etc. I would abide by whatever copyright and do know that many places have had trouble with using and distributing materials excessively and this was the case whether it was hard copy or not. I do suspect for computer savvy people it might be easier to cheat with the e-file.

Janet, I would want families to be able to copy the pages within their own families. This is aimed for use with Catholic homeschoolers who will more than likely have larger families. I wouldn't want to make an honest Catholic mom or dad feel like they couldn't copy a book they purchased for their own personal use.
Now buying and copying, passing it around among other friends would not be ok. But I don't think that most of the people who would be buying this kind of book would be doing that kind of thing. But I will definitely indicate a copyright. Thanks for the suggestion.
Now for a name for this series. Any ideas?

But seriously, any name will be good. Keep it short and sweet! There -- how about Short and Sweet? Nah, too silly. You could do something like Copy the Liturgical Year away... I don't know, I'm not creative.

Hi Katherine,
I always price my e-books/guides cheaper than the hard copies. Either way I expect moms to make copies for their families, so the "charging more for multiple use" doesn't make sense for me. Doing it the e-way is easier for me, so I make the price easier. In fact I always have a really hard time deciding on a fair price - I always fear I'm charging too much.
As for the copyright, I just say "copy for your own family only please" and then rely on people to be honest. I also put the copyright symbol on the front page. You might check out the Bravewriter site since she does almost exclusively e-file business and I think she has her copyright policy posted somewhere.
I hope you go through with this - it looks fabulous!
Where do you find the Zaner-Bloser script? Do you have a special program that does it when you type? I ask because I need to include cursive writing in Hillside's version of Intermediate Language Lessons and I don't know how to do that.
Thanks!
Margot

This is SUCH a sensible way to do it...

Thanks for your input Margot. That is very helpful. I've received so many suggestions (pros and cons for e-file) my thoughts are just a jumble at this point.
As far as the program for Zaner Bloser in ILL, you can order it from Educational Fontware. You just install it in your computer and it becomes a font available in your word processing program. I own the CD from a few years back when I helped write copywork and edit books for an Eastern Orthodox homeschool publisher. It's a great program...very easy to use.
Thanks again.

I posted 4 sample pages on my blog tonight for an alphabet book format. Do you think I should include this as the first of 4 levels?

Katherine,
Would there be copyright issues with Educational Fontware since you are using their fonts as copywork?

Or any configurations/combinations of the above.

I just saw this thread. I love this idea. I'd definitely want to buy a hard copy. I am a "hold a book in my hands" kinda gal. I really appreciate the idea that I could make copies for my family. I'd definitely purchase one!

That'a very good question, but the answer is no. I bought the licence when I bought the program and the only stipulation is that I don't share the ability to create new documents with these fonts (as in installing the font creating ability on multiple computers). But Educational Fontware does not own a copyright on any of these fonts either. They are a home-based business that uses the many fonts of the educational world to put together a program that allows you to use them on your computer. (The cursive linking function of the program is really cool and original.)
As I mentioned in a previous post I worked with Elizabeth Davis of Paidea Classics, andEastern Orthodox homeschool publisher for a while. I bought this CD to help her with copywork projects (she offers both print for sale and free PDF sample versions for Orthodox homeschoolers). That's probably the biggest reason I want to do this project. Our children were so blessed with the Orthodox copywork books and we miss having that. Those books don't transfer well into the Catholic liturgical year, so I want something like it to be available to Catholic homeschoolers as well.
But long answer to a simple question, there is no copyright issue.

That is so cool that you worked with Lizabeth. I have acquaintance with her - their (Paidea Classics) products are fantastic. Thanks for the info about the cursive font.
