Michele,
The one you have pictured with beautiful Maria! I like the idea of plastic rings and no padding.

OK, a very easy one to start with! Let's move this over to the new crafting forum Our Lady's Loom and get started.

Reviving this topic!
I have been reading through the various baby-wearing threads and trying to decide what I need.
Emily is 8 months and nice and fat. This is the age with my last four babies that I ended up back in physical therapy for my left arm, shoulder and back.
I have a Maya and a regular padded sling that I use when we are out. While I like them both and I can be relatively hands-free, I am not sure if my body is benefitting from it. I have been told in pt to center the baby on my body, instead of wearing her to the side. I find this harder with the sling.
Also,I want something for the up and down activity at home. I am scooping Emily out of a precarious situation, i.e. 3 yr old sister trying to carry her, constantly during the day and she ends up sitting on my hip while I finish my task. I KNOW my body isn't benefitting from this! My arm and shoulder are so fatigued. She hasn't figured out how to hold on, so she just pulls my body out of whack.
So, my point: I need something that centers her on my body but is also easy to pop her in and out of. I was looking at the Ergo, but it looks complicated and not convenient for the up and down stuff at home. How about the Moby? That looks better, but is it really different from a Maya Wrap? Any other suggestions that I have missed?

Where did I just hear about a new kind of carrier?? Shoot, it is escaping me. Let me ask Scott. We saw a thing on TV. Oh, oh, it was some former TV star who now runs this baby carrier business! Who was it??
(Not that we were watching VH1 Where Are They Now or anything... LOL LOL LOL)
Anyway, I don't know if this was a hip carry thing or a centered one--I'll try to find out and get back to you. Your poor arm & shoulder! I'm sorry you've had trouble with them!

Okay, Scott remembered. It was Quinn Cummings. (Remember The Goodbye Girl?) Here's a link to her site but since it's called the Hiphugger, I guess it's not the right one for you! Sorry!
P.S. Hey Alice--check out the blue toile one!!! I could match my curtains!
(Alice and I happened to buy toile curtains at about the same time without discussing it. Hers are pink, mine (now in the closet because no windows here fit them) are blue. LOL.

Wow, that's the sling Angelina (Jolie) uses! Gotta have that!
Yeah, won't work for me. Actually looks like it would really pull on the one shoulder. Ouch!
I am looking at a site, http://www.mom4life.com/catalog.php?category=4
that has several Moby type wraps. I like the looks of the "My Baby Nest".
Does anyone have the Moby D? I can't really tell what is so different about it from the Moby wrap other than it has different fabric on part of it. Prettier, but necessary?
BTW, this new year was the start of a spending freeze at our house, so I really need to make sure I NEED a new baby carrier.

Molly, I have been wanting one of these by Hotslings for a while now. Sort of like the one Lissa linked but able to be worn in the front. Would it work for you?

a bit late with this info.....but just wanted to throw it out there....
The slings/carriers I have been most happy with were from Tanya at Kangaroo Korner . She is out of Minneapolis and started designing her own slings about 8 years ago because she was so disappointed in what was on the market. It has since gone crazy, cuz she's so good at it! There is a helpful "choosing" section on the website to help you decide what you need/want, etc.

If she's a fat and dimply little baby, I would skip the moby or any other stretchy type wrap and opt for one of woven material. (and the only difference between a moby, and a mobyd is the pretty fabric.) It's SO easy and cheap to make your own wrap type carrier though, you can even usually get by with no sewing at all. A wrap like a moby is definetly different than a Maya wrap type carrier. It uses both shoulders and she will be centered on your front or back, whichever you choose. I am very fond of back carries myself. Molly spends a good chunck of the morning on my back, then again while I prepare dinner. In between she is usually down playing. (up until about 2 months ago she stayed there nearly all day, she's 8 months also)
While a wrap is my favorite type of carrier, it's not the easiest for 'popablity'. For that I would recommend a pouch type carrier, but then your not centered and it's really no different from the maya you have now.

I have a stretchy wrap I think is very similar to a Moby. As long as the Moby isn't too stretchy I think it would work as stretchy wraps are more "poppable" than fabrics with less give. You just need to tie it fairly tightly so that the give makes it supportive, not saggy. My 7 month old is a lightweight, but carrying her in the wrap is very, very easy, and I can see using it for a long time to come. The wrap definitely spreads the weight better than a ring sling.
Lisbet, I think the MobyD is a bit different as the front panel section is not stretchy, making it more supportive - so probably would be better for a larger baby.

Have you seen The Baby Wearer? Almost every style of carrier is reviewed, and if not, there are forums to ask questions. See Choosing a Baby Carrier to give you some ideas.
Basically, it's mind boggling how many choices. And of course, everyone has their opinion, of what works for them. But there are some things you can search, like for back problems, height, weight for mother and/or child.

Kathryn, That would make it a bit more supportive I suppose, I've only seen one up close, but have never used one.
BUT, I do have 2 regular mobys, and my peanut of a 8 month old is begining to get a bit saggy after a few minutes. Maybe it's b/c they are more 'stretched out' to begin with since Molly is the 4th baby in them? I'd still recommend a woven wrap for the long run.

I can't do a back pack. I am thinking that I could carry her on my back in something that didn't add weight and pull on my shoulders.
Rebecca, do you know how the Hotsling adjusts? Would it be easy to switch positions and to put her in and out? I definitely like the way it looks, with a good-sized baby snuggled up, centered on his mother's body. That is what I am looking for. With it only going across one shoulder, I wonder how well it distributes the weight. I have noticed that my slings tend to be pulling on my shoulder. Maybe it is the way Emily leans away when she is in it.
I also like the looks of the stretchy ones. If I just leave it on, wouldn't it be easy to put her in and out. The slings I have to adjust.
I hate to spend the money, but most of these wraps are less than three trips to physical therapy, not to mention the time involved.
Keep thinking and suggesting ladies. You are a great help!!!

Hi Molly - I am considering a sling for #5. I have never used one. I did use a Baby Bjorn for a while - but it ended up giving me plugged ducts and a sore neck.
I am considering the Moby D - I met a lady at church who had her baby in one and it looked so comfortable and easy. I started talking to her and it turns out that she sells them. Once I am further along she is going to visit and go through all the different ones and show me how to use them. I too am trying to make sure that I really need one - but am almost there. She has a website (she is based in Sterling, VA) if you are interested, I will try and find it and send you the web address.

It has been a few years but we front and back packed the girls.
After building the house I had some upperbody strength but a weak back.
DD#3 did not stay small they way her sisters did so found a Kelty back pack with an adjustable frame, think "mountain climbers back pack" here when she outgrew the front pack. Properly adjusted, the weight was evenly distributed on my hips. I was able to pack her through soccer fields, Girl Scout meetings, yardwork and every day activities (cooking was particularly safe and interesting from DD#3's point of view.)Setting the pack on the counter or floor of the van made picking her up and down and very easy.

Molly, I don't have a hotsling. I have been wanting one because mine are pretty ragged. I have two that I switch off using, an Over the Shoulder Baby Holder and a Maya imitation. My friend uses a hotsling and loves it.
