I am in the market for a new sling. I have a Maya Wrap and Sling Eeze. I'm looking for one that I can wear to church. The Maya has "loud" fabric and my husband is the one who uses the Sling Eeze. I've been looking at the pouch ones. I am so used to having ones that adjust, that I can't imagine it working! But the thought of not having the clanging of rings and all the extra material hanging sounds great! I actually sell The New Native Carrier, but have not had my hands on it (through a catalog) . Does anyone have one?

Any suggestions would be great! There were only a couple to choose from with my first. Now.....WOW!

Here's a previous sling thread. This one is about Ergo baby carriers and this one is about Maya pouch/wrap. This one is on Moby.

My very favorite sling is the one you found for me through your local connection...the one that doesn't sell them online anymore . It is the beige solarveil material with the smaller, plastic rings.

Love,

I recently splurged on the Ergo and baby and I love it. My favorite feature is that it is so versatile and he can be on my back, freeing up my hands.

I forgot to mention that I have tried the Moby Wrap and others that are similar. I just don't like them. I know many that do, though.

FWIW, I don't care for the new native pouch at all. I can never get baby secure enough. I do prefer a wrap though. Have you considered a Mai Tai?

I've never been able to wear a baby on my back--it does weird things to my center of gravity!

I need to buy a new sling for baby boy coming in a month!

Does anyone have any recommendations for a padded sling like the Over the Shoulder's? I saw this link to the zolowear which has some really pretty fabrics (though pricey, pricey!). Are their ring slings padded? Anyone know?

Just looking for more padded ring sling options besides NOJO and OTSBH...I'm too old to try anything new!

Jennifer, thanks for starting this thread--I think our babies are due within a few weeks of each other!!

Wow they sure ARE pricey! Jennifer these are SO easy to make. Did you see the sling I made recently? I didn't pad it but it would be very easy to. I can help you make one of these and for MUCH less money.

FYI, I use nylon rings so they don't clank.

God bless,

I'm with you, Jennifer...I've raised all my babies with the sling and just kept on doin' what I was doin' . Except...in AZ...I really wanted the coolest option possible, no pads, no layers. So although I was once a padded sling devotee, now I actually prefer no pad. Without the pad, I'm able to spread the material further across my back which distributes weight better. Also, it is much more transportable...when not in use, I just roll it up and put it in my bag/purse. And I'll add...I prefer plastic rings, not only because the don't make noise, I think they don't slide as much, giving a more firm closing, AND they don't heat up in the summer (ie, most of the year here.)

Michelle, the sling you made is the most beautiful one I've ever seen. And I've seen plenty.

Love,

I agree. I could never get the padded slings to feel right and they seemed so bulky. But everyone is different so you have to find what works for you. I will say that adding a lining does give you some padding without the bulk and still allows for the spreading of the fabric across the back.

And I think you are right about the rings Angie. I think the nylon/plastic ones do give a better hold - at least in my experience.

Gosh, there's SO many options for slings out there it almost makes your head spin!

Angie you are very sweet to say so. Actually I was thrilled with how it turned out. I have had it's design in my mind for a while and it's always so satisfying when the real thing turns out as well as you'd imagined. But if you think it's beautiful now you should see how much MORE beautiful it is with little Miss Maria in it!

Michelle,
That is such a beautiful sling! I have a sewing machine, but I just don't know if I can do it. I'm not confident with it at all. Maybe I can try to make a pouch type? I would think it would be easier to make than a sling with rings??? Any advice on how to make that kind?

The beauty of the sling is all in the fabric so it can be beautiful in whatever design you choose.

Here's a link with instructions to make several different kinds of slings - including a pouch sling:

Jennifer, I've got a Maya Wrap that is not loud looking. It is a medium to light blue color. I also have the Ergo, though we didn't use it nearly as much as the Maya. I don't think it is as usuable with a newborn; I forget what age our youngest was when we were finally able to try it out with him.

I've seen another one in recent times that looks to be quite the contraption, wrapped lots & lots around mom, and then baby is snuggled into parts of it. I don't know the name of it.

I've decided to not do the pouch style. From what I've heard, you have to buy different sizes as your size changes.    I think I'm going to look into the solerveil or mesh slings. It gets HOT here in NC!!!

Angie, did you say that the solerveil is itchy?

Thank you for the instructions on the pouch, Michele. It does look pretty easy to make!

Jenn,
I've had the same sling from parenting concepts for fourteen years. There are lots of fabric choices, some very neutral. I bought it in a petite and both the babies and I have grown. I'm about 20 pounds heavier than when I first got it. It's held newborns that were under 7 pounds, four month olds who were 22 pounds and 30 pound toddlers on my hip. Most of my babies have liked to be held upright, either facing me to snuggle or turned around away from me to see the world. I've never had to order another size as they grew.

Elizabeth,

The sling from Parenting Concepts is the one my husband uses. I had one and my son's toes went through it!    He loved to stand facing out. Maybe I need to just go back to that style? Decisions, decisions!

I'm going to order the tea's and balm you suggested on your blog. I'm thinking of the New Mama Bottom Spray, too!

OK, I couldn't resist. Here's a picture of Maria in her sling. Ok actually it's four pictures.

I made Mayas in plain single colour fabric for two friends... one of them just had to repair her sling as she used it so much it wore a hole in it ... that is to say, daily for over a year.

MICHELE... that sling is BEAUTIFUL. So is the baby in it As my DD would say... TOOT!! (cute)

I don't know how to quote !!! Michelle, you wrote that you can help make a sling for much less money. Do you have a pattern & instructions? My parents will be here for two months for when the baby is born. My mother is an amazing seamstress (she has made both of my children's baptism gowns...my godchild, John Paul's too). Maybe we can work on it together.

OK Jenn let's start at the beginning. What kind of sling do you want to make?
