Colin Andrew was born at 9:23. He's 6 pounds 4 ounces, 18 1/2 inches and cute as a button. He's in the NICU because he had some trouble breathing. No respirator, just a canula. She said that because she had high blood pressure and she's getting magnesium IV she CAN'T GO SEE HIM FOR 24 HOURS??? I'm literally contemplating go over there and raising a little heck. I don't get that? Anybody? She sounds great and they said that all was well healed from the last time. More later...

I do not know all that much about the magnesium but a couple of friends had it and they had lots of trouble with it. I think that is why they cannot see the baby. I thought they were allowed to see the baby with someone else though they just could not handle the baby alone because of the effects of the magnesium. I would go and find out for her - she needs someone to be on her side so she can see that little one.

I had the same thing happen to me due to toxemia. It was very frustrating. I was so drugged-up though that I couldn't have done anything for my son anyway.  My dh did everything for him until I could. I could SEE him though. My dh was in the room with me with our son.

Update:
He's on a respirator . And she needs to stay flat, so they are separated for now . Because of the Vicodin she took for the kidney stone pain, they are concerned about withdrawal in the baby. He may be there for two or three weeks more. So, for now, that's where things are. I'll post more later after I see her.

Welcome Colin! Congratulations Cindy and family!
Thanks for the updates, Elizabeth. Yes, I think it is a good idea to get an advocate for mom and baby's togetherness. So often it just takes another set of eyes and hands to help make something good happen for both (like agreeing to hold baby FOR mother, etc.) Skin to skin contact isn't just helpful for breastfeeding but also for all sorts of healing and peace of mind for mom and baby.

Oh, Dear...
Elizabeth and all..just a little medical aside from a former OB nurse....I am all for baby-mama togetherness, love attachment parenting....but high blood pressure, post delivery, that is high enough to necessitate magnesium sulfate, must be pretty worrisome and well, high.. The magnesium works as a nervous system depressant to decrease the potential of seizures and bring the BP down. If they won't let her see the baby, it should only be for a short time while they make sure she is out of the woods with her BP. I guess I am trying to give the other side, the medical side, that postpartum BP problems are nothing to mess around with, if they want Cindy flat and quiet, it is probably with very good reason. The good news is, BP problems do seem to go away pretty quickly. I say all of this because I have been on both ends of this, and I know how serious the situation can be, and the medical staff probably aren't trying to be difficult....just trying to take good care of poor Cindy.
