demin skirts look pretty with an eyelet slip under them.. perhaps if you leave the bottom few buttons undone and add a ruffle of eyelet UNDER the skirt that would show when the skirt shifts open at the undone buttons? you can buy eyelet ruffles so would be pretty easy.
I came back to suggest smartwool socks. they can be pricy but comfy and warm. they come in knee high.. and some solid colors.. cheapest way to get them that I've found is to watch www.sierratradingpost.com

Straight denim skirts just don't work well for everyday do they? I'd probably take it apart and add some panels to it to make it wider. Anything goes with denim so your fabric options are pretty unlimited.
You can certainly send it to me but um yeah my free time is pretty limited these days and bound to be more so in the months to come.

This is a great skirt. I owned one just like it before kids, in a much smaller size. I loved it. It was so flattering, and because it's a a-line, the buttons never pulled as I was moving around. I put a bid in Thanks for the heads up!

My good friend, who wears Plus-Size clothing just called me on her way home from a very successful trip to CJ Banks, which is the Plus-Size store of Christopher and Banks. I did a search for CJ Banks on 4real and got nothing, which is why I'm mentioning this, in case others who are looking for casual, modest, plus size clothing don't know about this store.
She had to drive an hour to get there...this is an annual trip. She stuck to the clearance rack and spent $240
This is what she bought: 5 skirts, 1 sweater vest, 1 embellished sweater, 2 turtlenecks, 2 shirts, 1 jacket/blazer, 1 dress.

I just wanted to update all of you on how I've been doing now that it's been cold. This is the time of year that I have slid back into my jeans so many times before. You have all been so much help with these great ideas, and they are working! I wear black spandes capri leggings under my dress/skirt each day, overtop of my tights if it's really cold and I'll be going out, or over trouser socks when we are at home. My skirts and dresses reach my ankles anyway, so this is all hidden. I even went to the tree farm on a bitter cold day in a denim pairie skirt and ankle boots. I felt so Caroline Ingalls!  I think I was actually warmer because of layers and the skirt acted as a blanket over my legs.
Thanks to all of this sharing here, I think I will be able to stick to it this time around! God Bless all of you beautiful women!

I'm actually having trouble wearing skirts now because I get *too* warm! We went to the mall the other day and it was cold, but as soon as I was inside, I started wanting to shed layers. Does anyone else have this problem? How do you acclimate when you go indoors from having been outside?

I don't go to the mall...
Serioulsy, you could probably walk around there in your tights and camisol and be dressed 10x' more modest than everyone else!

I'm sorry I wasn't helpful Tina, I just have a gigantic dislike of malls! (it's almost a phobia really)
To church I generally only wear tights under my skirt. I put the leggings on when I know I'm going to be outside alot. Are you getting so hot you can't stand it?

The malls around here are less scary than ones I've been to elsewhere. And while most people wear jeans, they don't seem to bare a whole lot (could be because it's winter, however).
My phobias tend in the direction of WalMart/KMart. 
And yes, the heat seems to travel up my body and steam out of my shirt collar. I feel like a cartoon, like everyone can actually *see* the steam rising.  And it can happen if I just have tights on. But sometimes, if a body is outside for a while and then goes in to a place not her own home and can't change out of leggings, well, what then?

Okay, this might sound crazy but since my dd did it (of course, she's only 7) maybe a grown up could too. We were shopping and she had dressed for really cold weather - long skirt over leggings over wool tights. Well, she really got hot in the store so she just went into the bathroom stall and took the leggings off. I rolled them up, put them in my purse and we were fine. Perhaps you could consider this for times you are shopping or really, even in church as long as there is a bathroom you could slip into. You could probably get buy with wearing knee-high socks and a longer skirt with boots. I have done that . I don't think anyone could tell -just don't forget to wear a slip underneath.

I did it! I wore a skirt while riding my bike to Mass this morning! It was definitely something to offer up, 3 miles there against a headwind and 3 miles back against a headwind (cold front came through while we were at Mass and the wind changed) meant my skirt was more like the windscoop on our hatches than an actual modest piece of clothing but I didn't get entangled, I didn't rip it, I didn't show more than I would have wearing my shorts (I think )
I still don't like wearing skirts on the boat. Something about entering the living room area by climbing down a ladder while everyone is seated below you looking up your skirt just makes me nervous but I always wear them around town and now I've 'proved' to myself that I can wear them bike riding to nice places too!

Tina,
It may just be a matter of your body needing to get used to it. I don' know what your weather is like but it just finally turned cold here and it always takes my body a few weeks to a month to adjust.
Just a thought. . .

I loved your post about riding the bike Jennifer, and I could definitely understand the issue of going down the ladder! When I decided to wear skirts 5 years ago we were getting ready for a 7 day camping trip in the Smokey Mountains. We don't have a camper or anything just a great BIG tent. Anyway, I decided that if I could wear skirts while camping I could wear them anywhere. I was surprised to discover that wearing skirts while camping was even easier in some ways than pants. I think I remember posting about this a long time ago, but one of the best things is having a skirt to put on after the wonderful experience of a state park shower. If you've ever done that, you know that sometimes the floors are rather wet and, well, yucky. It was always hard to put pants on without getting them in the yuck. A skirt is a whole different story though - you can just pull it on over your head! I also found that I was able to hike just fine, although I'm not sure I looked to stylish in my hiking boots and my skirt .But who's "stylin" when they are camping anyway? One thing I did do is wear long shorts under my skirt while canoing. Actually, I learned the hard way that a tipped over canoe plus a skirt does not equal modesty! I have to admit that that is the one time I usually wear pants now. But really, as long as it is a skirt I can move in I can't really say they are any more difficult to deal with than pants.
My daughter (7) has been asking for jeans lately. I let her wear them because I don't want it to become an issue or reason for rebellion some day. I hope that is the right thing to do. I have worn more pants lately too, but really, since I am in the habit of wearing skirts I prefer them.

As a result of this thread, I've been looking for heavier skirts for the winter. Skirts in both wool & corduroy seem to be very difficult to find. I'm also looking for a longer length - at least 34" - so that might have something to do with it. Chadwicks sells moleskin skirts. Doesn't anyone know of another place that does? Thx!

In years past the home shopping companies had lots of them.... www.qvc.com www.hsn.com etc. Also, try ebay, I just typed in "moleskin skirt" at ebay and it yielded 109 items. Most are long.
And, for all you Christopher and Banks fans....they are having a sale this weekend. 20% off already reduced merchandise.

Exactly, exactly what my husband says. Down to the Levis. I make an effort to dress up just a bit (khakis and button down shirts), but get the most compliments from him when I'm in my Levis...

I went to two 2nd-hand shops yesterday - 1 was Goodwill. I ended up with a beautiful brown cabbage rose floral lined long rayon skirt (too many adjectivies!)for $4, a wool skirt for $6 and a cashmere turtleneck sweater for $4!!!! Makes me never want to buy retail again .

hello all!
I have gained SO MUCH from reading this thread. I am usually a "jeans and t-shirt" kind of girl, as my husband puts it (always have dressed like a tom boy) . On occassion I have tried to wear a dress or skirt only to get frustrated at being used as a napkin by my smaller ones! Yet, I definately see and feel the difference of dressing feminine/modestly. My husband and kids both take notice and treat me differently and offer lots of positive encouragement. I hope to purchase a couple of skirts after this pregnancy (little one is due in April ) and thank you all for your encouragement and much needed advice. I feel VERY blessed to have found this forum.
