Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm 1/2 Basque (Spanish-Basque) and 1/2 Polish and fiercely proud of both heritages. My grandparents were immigrnats and so my parents are both first generation in this country.

My husband is 1/2 Portuguese and the rest a mix.

Me...mostly German, with a bit of Alsatian, Luxembourgois, Scottish, Irish and Hungarian (from somewhere in ex-Yugoslavia) thrown in. I've been to the ancestral villages in Alsace and Germany...cool!

Dh...??? Still working on this. Definitely Canadian (Nova Scotia)/Irish (probably Northern), and probably Italian and German for the rest. I've hit a genealogical brick wall on the Italian part, sigh.

I'm a complete American mutt. A little German, Irish, Welsh, Scottish, I think French and Native American. Both sides of my family have been here quite a long time and some fought in both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.

My husband is 1/4 Polish. His maternal grandmother immigrated from Poland around the time of WWII. The rest of him is also very mixed. They think part Swiss, Jewish, and who knows what else.

Laura, I'm also distantly related to Edgar Allen Poe. My paternal grandmother was a Poe. I forget how I'm related but my grandfather has it written down somewhere. It's definately a small world.

Well, I know I have English (my grandfather immigrated from Brighton, England), Italian (great grandparents mom's mother's side), Irish ( great grandparents on mom's father's side), German, Swiss and probably a bunch of other stuff on my dad's mother's side.

My dh is easy by comparison - his grandparents were immigrants from Canton, China - and his is the first generation to marry a non-Chinese, so he is 100% Chinese by race. I'm one of the few low fans on his side of the family. My dh is American born, however, and prefers to be indentified as simply American.

My dc have had a bit of fun with the forms that ask for race - and fill this out differently every time - depending on the mood of the day - sometimes Caucasian, sometimes Asian. They are a lot more fascinated by their heritage than their dad was and have been trying to learn phrases from grandparents, etc. which have tickled his parents. Since their dad doesn't speak any Chinese (Cantoneese or otherwise other than a few favorite foods and Happy New Year), we've never really done anything in the Asian community here (no China town or anything but there is a group that gets together for social events from time to time - we went bowling with them once but language was pretty tough since we had non-existent Chinese and most of them spoke limited English (much better than our Chinese) but were tons more comfortable in Chinese - and some were recent immigrants only speaking Chinese. My dh has never celebrated Chinese New Year or anything like that. We usually have to go back to his parents for any information on culture or traditions or language. They are tickled by the children's interest - so we are all learning bits and pieces. Our oldest dd has a Chinese name - the grandparents came up with it using her baptismal name - but the rest of the children's names are so Hebrew sounding that they couldn't come up with anything for them. They all did learn to write their last name in Chinese characters from their grandfather on his last visit and have been practicing and sending samples to them for corrections.

Dh is 100% German. He was so happy when Pope Benedict was elected.

Ds is Guatemalan. We know he is a bit Mayan Indian...but don't know how much

I'm not allowed to name our children anything Irish...Dh says it doesn't fit our last name and our children are from Guatemala. sigh...I guess he is right.

I am 100% Hungarian - paprikas-cooking, kalacs-baking, palacsinta-eating, sour-cream-in-my-veins Hungarian. I remember taking the bones from my bowl of kocsonya to school to show my friends.
(I will decline to specify what they were, but you fellow Hungarians can figure it out )
Rebecca, I always wondered if your blog name means you are a real gypsy. It's funny - when my son plays Liszt or a Brahm's Hungarian rhapsody on the piano I just can't sit still. My dh does not share my uncontrollable urges to dance to such music so it must be in my blood!
Yes, thanks Nina for this thread!

Kathryn, this was interesting. Do most in Britain refer to which area they are from?
It sort of made me think of "My Fair Lady" (which we just watched this weekend ) and the differences in speech Professor Higgins noted based on where one was living.
I will have to dig out my grandfather's birth certificate and see where he was from, specifically.

Thanks!
God Bless,

Yes and no . English / Scottish / Welsh / Irish - yes, definitely. Within that, certain areas have a very strong local identity - people would be inclined to identify themselves as Cornish or a Yorkshireman, for example. I wouldn't normally be that specific, but I'm genealogically minded and couldn't resist breaking it down a bit.

Interesting thread!

I am Irish and German, Italian and Sicilian

Dh is Polish, Hungarian and Dutch

Does anyone have any interesting characters or stories in their family histories? I love stories that make history come alive!

Like this one:

My dh's great grandmother, her sister and their aunt came over to America from Hungary together...while they were traveling across the country to catch the boat, one in their party got sick and it delayed them a bit. Soo by the time they got to the dock, the Titanic had already sailed without them!

What an interesting thread!

On my mother's side, I'm part Welsh, part English and a tiny bit of French Huguenot from way back when.

On my father's side -- absolutely no idea, except he was presumably white. I was born as a result of anonymous sperm donation so I will never know.

Dad's side: Cherokee, Welsh, Irish.

I do know that on my dad's side, the Welsh came over in the mid 1600's. And Will Rogers' mother was my gggrandfather's sister.

I think dh has German and Miami in him. Don't know what else.

of my kid-in-laws: one has mostly English, on has mostly Swedish, and one is full blooded Navajo.
