Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Maybe have a bunch of alcohol wipes in your kit to wipe off the scissors before use? I really have no idea if this is good practice; just a suggestion.

I think you can buy steralized, sealed scissors at a hospital store- or a really good pharmacy.
I think there are some kits you could buy online...

ok no scissors but here are some kits... very reasonable!

OK scissors here from the same company, scroll down for medical supplies:

Hmmmm... maybe I'll order a kit

God Bless,

Hi Dawnie,
We have always kept a 'birth kit' in the car during pregnancies and were very thankful for this when my fifth child was born in the van en route to the hospital (we like to joke that she was the first child delivered by a doctor, as my dh is a phd). I would recommend trying to get a pair of hemostat clamps for clamping the cord - the handles lock together so they stay securely shut. Perhaps your doctor would even lend you a pair from the office if you can't find them at your local pharmacy/medical supply store. You might want to go ahead and get two pairs in case of emergency - if you had to cut the cord you use two clamps and cut between them. If they aren't already sterile you could clean them with alcohol and seal them in a ziploc bag. Blankets and towels and of course a bulb syringe you already mentioned, but I would also suggest one of those little hats to keep baby warm. My dd was born in May but her temp was still down a bit by the time we got to the hospital. Be sure dh is clear on how and when to clamp the cord and what emercengy situations might require actually cutting it. My dd had the cord wrapped around her but dh was able to just slip it off. Now she's six and every year on her birthday we take her back for a picture in the parking lot where she was born.

Dawn, I'm not trying to frighten ya, but don't get your head set on a quick labor! My first was a long 27 hours, my second, third and forth were 3-5 hours, 5th was 12 hourse, 6th was 17 hours, 7th was 44, yes, 44 hours of INTENSE labor, then my 8th was 22! (all at home) I think after having quick labors, a long one seems even longer! Everyone kinda assumes they'll be shorter each time, but that's not necessarily the case. (I hope it is for you too, esp. since you may have no choice about a homebirth that way! )

Lisa,

My longest labor was about 14 hrs...but most of it was pretty easy. That's the only one where my water didn't break at the beginning of labor...the other 2 labors were 6hrs. and 2 1/2 hrs. I realize this one could be longer, I just want to be prepared if it's not!

My dh works at 911 and is very into "emergency preparedness"...I think he's rubbing off on me...

Mrs. K...thanks for sharing about your car birth! I knew someone on this forum had a baby in the car, but couldn't remember who...I was hoping you'd respond to this thread.

I will be 37 weeks tomorrow, so preparation is moving into high gear now!

Dawn
