I have had it on my heart for a few months to look into wearing a chapel veil at mass and in the adoration chapel and/or confession (in the presence of our Lord). I had thought about it, and prayed about it, and I've done a bit of research on it, and my husband is very supportive. I am pretty young (23), and it seems like I only see older ladies wearing them. However, on Sunday at mass I saw a very young woman, maybe 18-20 wearing one, and I found her to be stunningly pious. I thought maybe God was sending me a sign to not be afraid. So, I was wondering if any of you ladies wear them, as I have found you to be such a beautifully feminine and faithful bunch! If so, what are your reasons and what lead you to the wearing of your veil in the first place? I need some encouragement, as I find it sort of scary to step out and make such a puplic statement, whether that is my intention or not (it's not).

Hi Andrea,
Yes, we (my girls and I) do wear chapel veils to Mass,
but, we attend a Latin Mass(not a piusX )in the Seattle area...so it is very normal for women and girls to wear head coverings.I have found them to be a wonderful way
to focus fully straight ahead on the Mass. I find I only
turn my head to make sure my littles are properly focused and behaving....My girls and I feel very feminine and yet humble before Our Lord and Beautiful Savior....PS:We actually made our head coverings out of lace material from JoAnns.....
Be not afraid!!

you should do whatever you think is right!
no-one in the uk wears them except very elderly italian ladies.
i wore a mantilla (same thing?) for my mother in law's funeral and for a requiem mass for the holy father -- even then i was the only one. can't imagine what people would think if i did it every week!

I think you should! What a beautiful idea.
Michelle recently made a gorgeous Chapel Veil, you might find inspiration there...

Jennifer,
Thank you for the link to Michelle's beautiful Mantilla!
It looks like a lovely project....printing it out now!
Andrea....you can also cover your head with a stylish
hat, even a light fine thread shawl is elegant and very
feminine and can be worn on the head, or slipped onto the shoulders, too.

Yes, I can finally say that I always do. I have been so wishy-washy about it in the past. We belong to a pretty traditional parish and I'd say about half of the women cover their heads, young, old, and in between. (I'm 31) I know the 'whys' and have always felt it on my heart to do so, but I used to be so caught up in what everyone would 'think'. I've finally gotten over that (well, I'm better at conquering it when it comes up, and it still does...) and since Easter I have always covered my head before the Blessed Sacrament.

I have worn hats for a while now.. not every Sunday.. partly because I don't have a good winter hat. I've also used snoods.
I have never gotten a negative comment.. only people coming up to me and telling me how nice it is to see.
I started with why it was required, why it no longer is required and examined what it was about it that I wanted to wear it for.
I found that why I wanted it was to remind myself that my husband is the head of our family, especially when I find myself at Mass alone so much during his busy work season.
The hard part for me was realizing that just because I wished to wear it, that it didn't mean I must wear it.. and that I can (and do) wear a hat sometimes and not at others.

Wow thank you for your responses. I like what you said, Jodie, about must wear it vs. wishing to wear it. I read something earlier that said that before one puts a veil over her head, that she must first have a veil over her heart - I found that to be beautiful. I feel like I am in a place in my life where I understand my call to be submissive - to my husband and my Lord - and I feel ready to do it. But it is scary, and right now I go to a very UNorthodox parish. To boot, my husband works in youth ministry and catechesis (coordinator of Life Teen) at the church (which is why we must go there), which puts me in the "public eye" to speak. I think I may acclimate myself to it by wearing it first to adoration, daily masses that I attend closer to home, and confession...then see from there.
It's such a lovely expression of feminity to me.

My brother-in-law, who is in Rome studying for the priesthood, told me the "true" history behind the veil -- traditionally, only three things were covered during the Mass -- the tabernacle, the chalice, and the women. The reason those three things were covered was that they all contained the mystery of life and God's creative power.
Veiling was a sign of great importance and reverence -- not of submission.
I thought it a beautiful sentiment. I have been tempted to begin veiling, but as a new convert and fairly involved in the parish (teaching CCD to two grades), I am hesitant to make others uncomfortable.
I am 25, approaching 26 myself .... the three women in my parish who do veil appear to be in their thirties and very early forties. All of the negative comments I have heard directed toward those women have been from the baby boomer, 45-65 crowd.

I recommend finding a long lace piece, mine is about 5 feet X 18inches,preferably a little stretchy i.e. spandex blend and long enough to wrap around your head, fling to your back and even tie in the back if needed (think Jackie-O). That way you can keep it on while handling a toddler. Those doily kind or the triangles never really stay on. But the one I have now does. I found it at The Dress Barn in the accessories section. It had some beads on it but I just tore them off so as not to whack the pews during Mass if I had to take it off.
I feel VERY feminine in mine. All the moms of big families at our church (also Latin Mass) wear the "wrap around the head" kind. It just makes more sense 'cause it stays put! Also, it covers the head/hair completely like the lovely statues of the Blessed Mother have.
It would be a difficult call for me to wear one to a Novus Ordo Mass. I don't because no one else does. I don't like calling attention to myself. But a different thought might be this: St. Paul says somewhere something to the effect of "make your modesty known to all". Would veiling at a "liberal church" count for this? A nice modest veil beats hip huggers/a cropped shirt any day of the week!

Oh and Andrea.. everyone looks stupid in the wrong type of hats. Keep your eyes open when you watch old movies and such where the women did wear hats.. and get a real feel for the styles of hats (and what hairstyles and face types they go with) Then go looking for a good hat.

I veil at any Mass now. I did feel uncomfortable at first when we weren't at our own parish. Christ is Christ. He is the same at a lovely Traditional Mass as He is at the most relaxed NO Mass. There are good side reasons to veil but the main reason is for Christ.

Same here. Isn't it strange that the ones who would remember the days when veils were worn as the norm are the same ones who are the biggest naysayers now?

Ours is also an FSSP parish and I would say about 1/3 of the women veil.
Most of the moms just can't keep them on with the babies pulling them off all throughout the Mass! I tried it...but it became MORE of a distraction, so I do not. There is absolutely no pressure coming from our pastors. It truly comes from the heart of each of the women who choose to do it, out of reverence, in love.
In fact my oldest daughter, ALWAYS has. Still does. And I have never told her to!!! My little girls do it---sometimes---more, for "fun" (I can tell ) but who cares if it makes them feel more "prayerful" and serious about the Mass.

I guess I should have said that the veil is not JUST about submission. It is ALSO a sign of reverence for the mystery of creation that we women carry within us.
I will say that Paul wrote a lot of things that, taken literally and for our own day, would make Catholic life look pretty different from what the Church has authorized for today. I come from a Bible-only, fundamentalist protestant background, and have seen the words of Paul used as prisons for people by well-meaning but totally off-base pastors.
If Holy Mother Church tells me that praying with my head uncovered makes me a whore (which is what Paul is referring to with the "head shaved" comment), then I will cover without question. But that is not Her teaching.
I am no liberal, but I look to the Church to interpret the words of Paul, because when I have seen people try to follow his teaching literally and without seeking needed context from the Church, there has been bondage and legalism. Not at all saying that all those who cover are in bondage! I think it is a beautiful practice when done out of love for tradition and humility before God. But there are those few (not here -- I've mostly seen this attitude on CAF) who try to be "more Catholic than the Pope" in arguing that ALL women MUST do it out of modesty and submission and that if they fail to do so, they are sinning. That is not what the Church says.

I'm tossing this out just because I thought it was interesting. I am NOT saying you shouldn't wear veils...just food for thought.

Oh no no no.. that's not what I meant at all.. I even said above about reconciling that just because I wished to do it did not mean it had to happen every single Sunday etc.
What you said goes very well with some Catholic things I've read on modesty.
It just seemed very odd to say it wasn't about submission when it's one of the points St. Paul makes. That it has more than one meaning is perfectly understandable.
