Well, Bill just called from his appt. with an orthopedic specialist. They did x-rays which showed no problems with the bone(s). The dr. all but ruled out ligament damage as well, from the way the knee felt and the way he could move it.
At this point they are running tests to see if there is an infection going on (though he has no temperature and no rash) or possibly, lyme disease. If those tests are negative, they will need to explore further the arthritis (rheumatoid) possibility.
They removed *tons* of fluid and Bill said that helped immeasurably - he even was able to walk out without his crutches, the relief was so great.
I'm such a wreck my head is spinning. I literally just put down the phone and came here to post. Please keep praying for Bill ...
Of course Bill joked that the dr. was writing out a prescription for "No Dishes!"  But he does have to keep off of it so that does change the dynamics around here a bit! Of course I will gladly do every single chore in this house if his knee would clear up and be nothing too serious.

Another update. (It just makes me feel better to tell you all what's going on. )
Dh is going in this morning for a requested follow-up with the orthopedic dr. We're not sure if this is just routine or if something in the tests showed up. His knee is still so swollen and stiff. I know he is very anxious about this.
