Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Now, if someone can give me some advice on how to get my teen to stop drumming on everything in the house without screaming, "STOP DRUMMING!!!" I'd be immensely grateful.

Thats so funny, my older boys and my DH do that too. I think they just have so much energy it has to come out someway. Also anything that could possibly be turned into a soccer ball or football, is.

I would be interested to know if you notice the same calm if different of your children are off doing something.

It's funny that you mention that, Patty, because after I wrote my post, I was wondering that very thing. It's possible that my introverted 5th grader is also a big part of the problem. She's quiet when alone, but with her sisters, she can definitely hold her own. She may be instigating the off topic conversations just as often as her older sister, for all I know!

My biggest issue with the level of noise is when it's all directed at me in the form of a question or when everyone wants to share his take on something exciting that happened.

Well, I've really noticed that problem around here lately too. The girls get so excited to share something that they all want to tell me at once. The noise level rises to an unbelievable pitch, and I have to have the wisdom of Solomon to decide fairly who gets to start telling me first.

Now I know that I am not alone: that my children are likely being normal, rather than excessive. I am going to continue to focus my efforts on being reasonable, reminding them to keep the volume down, and having quiet times each day.

As I read this morning's readings for Mass, I came to think and pray upon whether my level of desire for quiet is ordered according to God's will for my life (esp. with having children in the home). I need to temper better/more my need for quiet (for sanity) with the need for my children to both communicate and to let out/express energy. I don't mean the children should have free reign on noise; but, that I need to be more detached from my desire for quiet and be more accepting of undesired volumes -- at appropriate times obviously. I'm resolved to work toward greater detachment in this area.

Thanks all for helping me see that what has seemed excessive to me is "par for the course." May God bless us all whether our homes are quiet, a-buzz, or blaring.

Sigh...I wish it was just excess energy. Ds is obsessed with rhythms. That's why he loves the guitar (and piano, and percussion...etc) so much. I give him a song with fabulous Christ honoring lyrics and he doesn't even *hear* them because he is picking out all the different instruments and what kinds of rhythms they are making. When we are in the car, he drums on the door, on his thighs, on the a/c vent. When he and I are cooking in the kitchen every utensil and cutting board is fair game for an instrument. He has drumsticks. He uses a pad, but I am beginning to think that he just walks around all day hearing rhythms in his head. I think he does it unconsciously. But you wouldn't believe how loud it is in the basement when his toes are banging out a rhythm at the kitchen table!!!

Lord, please have mercy on me. I may end up in the koo koo farm at this rate...
