Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Jenn I agree with MAria about Thrift shops, you can have peace of mind about not spending extra cash, and if anything is broken you have invested very little. My ds's "play" tea with their 3 older sisters frequently, I have small mugs from a potter friend, hearthsong china set (breaks quite easily) and many odds and ends from thrift shops. If you look through montessori type magazines , get an idea of what you want, then when you hit the yard sales and second hand stores you will find things quite simply.
We do pouring exercises with cold drinks prior to the littles tackling "TEA"
As for someones post about children respecting the sand tray etc, I have a hard time with this, our Pink Tower has met the same demise Yet I find it very difficult the more children I have to limit access and insure its proper use. I suppose in some ways I have given up the notion of a perfect Montessori set up, I love the idea, however our home life is not a school setting, and therefore I have no idea how to make it run like one. Hence lots of broken teas sets and pink towers, not to mention sand in the wool rugs

We only take ours out for tea time (4ish). I try to also provide a snack to hold them over to dinner. I also limit how much tea they can have (2 pots total), and we don't have tea time if we are going out. Too many bathroom trips.

Jen -

I too, have a 3 year old boy (plus an almost 2yo boy and another one due in December!), and was having a hard time finding something "boyish". This set seemed like it might fit the bill (plus I got Elizabeth's approval ) I'll let you know what the quality is like once I receive it.

I've seen that one and admired it for a while...let me know the quality.

I had looked into some Polish pottery miniature tea sets last year. There was a discussion about the gorgeous Polish pottery...I'm a big fan, although I only have a few pieces. They get expensive! I found one source for about $30.00 with shipping...but dh didn't want to buy it at the time. Alas, as I was going to post the link I found the shop has closed. Back to the drawing board. But those pieces are sturdy and not too feminine. I know I'm answering my own question....I'm off to try and find another source.

I got the Schylling tea set today. We haven't "officially" broken it in yet, but my 3yo ds was really excited about it and asked if he could drink some "sweet tea"! This is definitely not a full size set, but it seems very sturdy, and the perfect size for the little hands in my house. Thus far it definitely has my approval. We also got the miniature silverware set - $3.95 you can't beat the price!

Okay Jen, so I can let you know that the tea set is REALLY sturdy. My 3yo ds accidentally dropped it as he was getting down from his chair yesterday (and we have a pub table so it's pretty high), and it didn't even chip! The boys have really liked using the set thus far, having "coffee" just like daddy!
