Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I think that the statistics that "show" that women over 35 have an increased risk of having children with birth defects are presented in a misleading way. Consider this:

In reference to Down's Syndrome,
At maternal age 30, 99.9% of babies do not have it.
At maternal age 36, 99.6% of babies do not have it.
At maternal age 40, 99.1% of babies do not have it.
(Wilke, Abortion Questions and Answers, 1988)

What many doctors tell women is that a woman over age 35 has a 4 times greater risk of having a baby with Down's Syndrome. Sounds scary, right? The truth is, that a woman UNDER age 35 has a .1% chance of having a baby with Down's Syndrome; a woman OVER age 35 has a .4% chance of having a baby with Down's Syndrome. .4% is 4 times greater than .1%, but the risk is still VERY small and your chances of having a healthy baby are MUCH greater than having a baby with Down's Syndrome.

Amen to that! When you look at the numbers from a different perspective, the odds are still not that high.

I didn't have my son until I was 36, so I'd have totally empty arms if I followed their suggestions!

It is very encouraging to read all your replies. I was 40 when dd4 was born. I am now 43 and we would be so thrilled if God would bless us with another child. But, as many have said, conception does not get easier with age. Somehow, I know in my heart that another child will join our family. I pray.

Dear Stephanie,
I will be 42 next week and am due in January. My mother was 46 when my youngest brother was born. It is weird, but for the last 10 years, I am following almost exactly her spacing of children.
She also was expecting #8 at the age of 42. So I have hopes also for #9.

Blessings,
Stephanie

I was 40 when my 7th was born, 41 when I conceived and miscarried this summer, and I just turned 42. I am not giving up yet! I'm drinking RRL tea, using progesterone cream and will try a few more herbal things as the budget allows.

I always get a happy laugh at how greedy for babies we all are!

I just re-read this and I had to smile.

Yes, we are very greedy for babies!
My dds are also greedy for babies, and I am thankful for that.
