Thank you all for your prayers! The evaluation went well. The evaluator was a very nice young woman and my son went with her happily for the eval. She said she preferred to take him alone - which threw me a bit. Ds is actually fine with going off without me, but I kind of wanted to be in there to observe and assist. Though I can see the point that ds would probably act differently if I were in there.
As it turned out, she had me come in at the end so we could discuss the eval. On the one hand she was very pleased with ds as far as his behavior (which was very agreeable and enthusiastic). She also said she was happy to see he was commenting on things and looking for her to comment on things he was doing. For instance she brought out cars and he said "WOW, cars!" and when he was playing with markers he kept initiating responses from her. She said he laughed a lot with her and was funny too.
Because it was only a 45 min. eval, there were some things she didn't see. Like she had written down ds didn't know how to respond to (or didn't know the answer to) "Where's your nose?" or "Where's your ear?"
So I just asked ds those questions while we were talking and he immediately did them for me. She laughed and corrected her notes. There were a few more instances like that, and she admitted that a full evaluation really can't take place until he starts being seen by the therapist over a period of time.
We had been seeing a speech therapist from last December until the end of May. The same kind of thing happened then. Ds had a eval in November that went poorly and once he started seeing his therapist she questioned a lot of the report and adjusted her approach.
Sorry for rambling. The bottom line is, the day went smoothly and ds was great. The speech therapy will kick in asap - once she writes up a "short" report to get it going. She's proposing 2x a week. Right now we do OT 1x a week. It will be a lot - schedule wise and financial wise, but we will manage.
Thank you for praying for us. I know your prayers touched the whole situation, especially my peace of mind!
