Has anyone reviewed this item on their blog or this forum? I could not find a thread on this book by DeMille...looks like it could fit well into CM methods...and perhaps I could even get my husband to read this one!

There are some very interesting reviews for the book at Amazon.com. Seems there are alot of questions as to the Author's educational pedigree.

Here is the link to Rachel's review:
A Thomas Jefferson Education
Also, Faith at Dumb Ox Academy is using TJE for her homeschool this year -- all her blog posts are interesting but I linked to the original TJE ones here

I've begun collecting blog entries about A Thomas Jefferson Education.
Those who have blogged about the book, the philosophy, or any aspect of implementing a TJEd are invited to submit entries to the Thomas Jefferson Blog Carnival.

I recently bought Thomas Jefferson Home Companion. I hope to blog a bit about it this summer.
Leonie blogged about TJE a little while back.

I am implementing TJE in our own way this year. I have blogged about it. There are a series of posts that you can find here: http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/Juliainsk/318359
The rest of the series is after this first post.
Blessings,

Oops! I can't get the link to work. I am so bad at this. If you really want to read them, I guess you'll have to cut and past it. Sorry.

I recently started reading this book and like what I've read (despite questions about the author's educational pedigree) I do like what he's saying. Soooo, for those of you who discussed this earlier and were trying to implement this approach into your schoolroom...how goes it? Does it work?

What I am doing right now is focusing on my "education". I let the younger kids (9 and under) do their written work, a few workbooks, then they are free to read which they all do constantly. I have been reading things of interest to me. I checked out several novels that are on the book list for adults and I am enjoying that.
I would like to start working on some form of handiwork like knitting, or pick up the guitar again. (Although, the huge belly probably rules that out for now!) I really don't have any hobbies or interests that the kids see me working on.
I also have been reading the various lectures from the DeMille's trying to get a better view of what I am doing. For the younger kids, it is really very close to unschooling, which I am comfortable with. With my 11 yr old, I am still trying to determine what stage she is in but I am trying to let her lead the way with some things.
I sent my TJEd book on my dh's business trip with him so that he could understand the philosophy behind it and help me with planning. When he gets back we will sit down and evaluate where each child is and what our goals are.
I love TJEd! The more I read the more natural and logical it sounds. I haven't quite figured out the mentor thing, I guess that doesn't really come into play until they are older. And for the parents, now.
What is this about his educational pedigree?

It does work... by my DH is the current mentor for my son who idolises him and copies everything he does .
There are some aspects of the philosophy that I really need to get back into using (like the weekly meetings), but we just kind of added what worked into our '4real' lifestyle

Molly and Rachel,
Thanks for the input. I have to say that the "formula" for TJed somehow *feels* right---I like its premise and so much of what it says. Over time I've become negligent about reading whatever it is the dc are reading (especially the older ones taking the online classes) and have noticed a gap when a teaching moment comes...and goes without my jumping in. Have definitely felt like there's something Big missing in our work---my kids are definitely NOT striving for greatness or leadership or much of anything else of late. This little book is timely. It (and your comments) have given me much to ponder!
My 12 year old is currently wading his way thru a somehwat simpler version of "Canterbury Tales" (I know that's NOT what the book recommends, but hey, he's already reading it)---so I decided to take the bull by the horns and read it with him---we've scheduled a Barnes & Nobles Moment next week to discuss it. We'll see if this helps motivate him and instruct me.
The part about reading books of mathematical genius gives me the hives, though. Well, one step at at time!

PS Re: the author's background---there was some discussion somewhere that he had a somewhat bogus doctorate---I don't remember the exact deal---but true or not, I figure one doesn't need to throw out the baby with the bath water--he still has some mighty fine points.

I haven't read all of the links yet, but I find this philosophy very interesting. I really like the emphasis on educating myself - wow, there's a concept I've dropped the ball on!!
Thank you for sharing this information

PPS: His Wikipedia bio. He earned the B.A. in Biblical Studies (May 1992), M.A. in Christian Political Science (December 1992), and Ph.D. in Religious Education (May 1994) at Coral Ridge Baptist University, also a B.A. in International Relations with a minor in Aerospace Studies at Brigham Young University (August 1994).
I had also believed he only had one tiny daughter (age 3???) when he wrote the book, so hadn't tried anything out himself, unlike, say, the Robinson Family. But the bio states he now has 8 kids.

I went to the George Wythe College website and was extremely surprised to discover that it is located in Cedar City, Utah. I was just in Cedar City not too long ago--for the second or third time-- and never heard of George Wythe College while I was there ---there is another college there, the University of Southern Utah or something---and of course, the wonderful Utah Shakespearean Festival---but this was the first I'd heard of George Wythe (and it is a small town, Cedar City). There were no pictures of the campus that I could find on the website (but remember, I'm technologically challenged!) The credentials of most of the teachers would imply that they are predominantly Mormon...it is a VERY Mormon town...without even a Catholic Church (well, they 'share space' with an Episcopal church---this was explained to us as we were greeted at the door by an effusive pastor-clad woman who encouraged us to come worship with them! It was a little creepy-I politely declined and hustled my little brood out of there) Anyway, all this isn't to denigrate what might be a very noble effort---I really really DO feel very drawn to these ideas, and as we all know, changing the status quo often requires radical action that is usually perceived as "weird" (as in "those weird homeschoolers" ) Like I said before, don't want to throw out the baby with the bath water! Instead, just throwing into our conversation a touch of "caveat emptor" before we all rush off and apply to George Wythe College! :-)
That being said, I'm still planning to incorporate some of these ideas and am interested to hear how other people have approached and incorporated this method.

He has at least 7, the oldest being a boy who is in high school I believe and the book isn't that old. (Dh has it, so I can't look at the copyright). He and his wife have also written very detailed papers on the method and how they use it, how they came to their philosophy and also discuss the major thinkers in educational philosophy.
George Wythe College is Mormon. From what I can tell, it's teaching style is very similar to TAC.
I have encountered nothing "Mormon" in any any of the books or papers.

Here's an article I dug up from a search on George Wythe College, from the Cedar City Review. Apparently the college is housed "In a building in Providence Center...". Also, if you read the disclaimer on the college website, you will see that it is registered in the state of Utah, but not accredited. I suppose someday it could be accredited.
I suppose that kind of goes along with the self-education philosophy, but then why spend the money on someplace that's not accredited if you're capable of educating yourself in the first place and don't put much value on a piece of paper that says you know what you're doing (a degree).

Thanks for that article, Valerie. It helps put a "face" on the school (more effectively than the web site did!). I like knowing concrete things like how many students there are and what degrees are available. As for the accreditation thing, that doesn't fuss me so much...afterall, my children are graduating from a "non-accredited" highschool (GASP)
