Maybe a brief snack right at our work table/desk.
Maybe I could use a special tray or something. |

Doesn't the idea of a silver tray with beautiful tea set come to mind? Like a proper English tea?

We have had this issue with my 2 dd's. I find they are hungry at different times in the a.m., one is STARVING upon wakefulness, the other is usually STARVING by 10:30. I want to respect their hunger schedules, but I can't linger in the kitchen all morning. Many times after breakfast I would fix a small tray of finger foods - fruit, cheese, crackers and bring it down to our schoolroom with us. I also keep some juice boxes and other unperishable snacks (sultana's no less !) in a closet we have down there. I have learned the hard way that if we leave the schoolroom for a drink or a snack, we don't return again that day! I notice that some Montessori schools in the area do the same thing - they leave out a tray in the a.m. for kids to go to at their leisure. I don't believe they actually stop lessons to have a snack, though. I'm loving the tea idea, too! I may just purchase a plug in kettle and add some mugs and tea bags to my food storage area downstairs so we can also have tea at our leisure, as well. YUM!
I'll never forget my very first day on the job in my own classroom some years ago. In those days I didn't think anything about scheduling in a morning snack (really I was clueless about many other things as well) By about 10:30 one of my first graders was clutching his stomach in feigned agony. When I approached him he cried, "My stomach HURRRRRRTTTTS!" Not suspecting hunger as the culprit I asked him, "Does it need to go to the bathroom?" He responded, "NO! It needs the peanut butter sandwich in my LUNCHBOX!" Needless to say, on school day #2, we had 10:30 snacktime....and I brought snacks for the entire class !

You're right! My dh always says he's a hobbit on the weekend. That way he has an excuse to eat Second Breakfast. I think there is someone on this list that calls it, or used to call it "elevenishes" ? I'm remembering a post from a while ago about something quite similiar.

Elevenses
If I remember rightly, the hobbits had both second breakfast and elevenses.

Erica, I've been meaning to ask: Could you perhaps share the recipe?
Thanks!

I'm laughing here, a conversation spurred by a comment I made and I didn't even know
Now when I say morning tea I do indeed mean recess, a quick snack, biscuits or fruit for food and some exercise to get the brain flowing, a jump on the trampoline, a run around the block or a quick couple of laps in the pool in the summer. This time slot is about 20-30 minutes. Mainly because I also use this time to throw the washing on the line etc. But it does do the children good to have a break.
I'm confused, do you have recess there or not? As for schools cutting it out I'm outraged. How ridiculous.
A formal sit down tea, I call that 'high tea'. We don't do that everyday if we did I'd weigh alot more than I do. Elizabeth talks about that tea in her book. We would have high tea on special feast days or when I'm organised once a week (haven't been organised for a good while) And for those high teas it is in the afternoon. We have lunch then start cooking, what a mammoth task, imagine 6 children all demanding to make their 'own' slice, biscuit, pavlova etc something new they haven't done before and something 'special' and only 2 really capable of following unaided but still having to make space for them.
It is generally 3pm by the time we sit down. Now I have lots of boys, (they are 11, 9 and 7) and they love the good stuff, the special tablecloth, tea set, plates and the food laid out as if for company. And the girls love picking flowers, the boys would be happy to do this if the girls didn;t beat them to it.
Worthwhile but I wouldn't attempt to do it everyday.

I'd be happy to, Stef!
Melt 1 cup of butter in pot on medium heat.
Add 1/2 cup of brown sugar and 1 teaspoon of vanilla.
Mix well.
Stir in 3 cups of oatmeal (quick cooking type).
Stir and cook about 2 minutes.
In another pot:
Melt 1 cup of chocolate chips on low heat.
Add 1/2 cup of peanut butter and stir.
Press 1/2 of the oatmeal mixture into a 9x9 inch square pan.
Pour chocolate over mixture.
Add the rest of the oatmeal mixture to the top.
I think pressing this down into the chocolate helps it to all stay together better.
Refrigerate for a few hours and cut into bars or squares.
We've doubled and put into a 9x13 inch pan with success.
This is so easy and nice to make in the hot months because you don't have to turn on the oven. My 9 and 11 year old girls make these frequently. :)
People seem to love these whenever we take them to a gathering!

I'm hungry now...
This is a great idea... and I LOVE the High Tea on Feast Days idea too!
And my kids NEVER balk at cookies/biscuits so that is a good choice.
Now... there are two Taste of Home Magazines (one TOH and one Light and Tasty) that have cookie and quick bread recipes MADE for this...
