Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Oh, I love mine too. It's been buried under my pile of stuff because I'm so restricted on space right now, but I do love it. And, Michele really ships quickly.

All right. This is really it. I was going through my MomAgenda planner, filling in dates, etc., and came across this quote for the week of July 16-22, 2007: "A liberated woman is one who has s*x before marriage and a job after.-Gloria Steinem"

I'm off to order a Catholic Mother's Daily Planner from Michelle.

Lesson learned.

Ewww...that is offensive. I think I'll write and tell the momagenda lady.

I have both planners. I use Michele's as a prayer journal. My plan was to forego the bound momagenda next year but to get the Weekly Family Planner for the fridge. In practice, I have found this to be very useful but the bound one to be redundant (probably because I rarely go somehwere and need to take my planner with me. But... I find that quote wayyy offensive.

Ugh! I guess this is indicative of the "hip, stylish moms" talked about on their website.
I'm really surprised that all the quotes wouldn't be a bit more, I don't know, generic?
Lisa, I'd be inclined to let them know why you won't be using their planner.

I did send an email expressing my disappointment. Really, what if I didn't notice it before and sent my dd to check what I had down for Tuesday, and she comes back reading that junk? Phooey.

I use a big white board in the kitchen as a weekly calendar, with everyone's schedules and what's for dinner, all color-coded, and that works for me. I do love the small size of Michelle's planner, because I can stick in my purse when I know I'm going somewhere where I'm going to need to schedule an appointment.

Things that are not good and pure and right just have a way of sneaking into our homes, in ways you'd least expect.

Could I waylay the thread just a bit and ask for details -- if you use a big whiteboard, what type it is, how you make it easy to read, how you color-code etc.?   I was just thinking that I could really use something very visual and LARGE to help me organize our days a bit better.   Right now we have papers and notebooks in various places in the kitchen and it works all right, but I think it could definitely be better.

Okay, this whiteboard is totally real and unretouched. My color-coding is pretty remedial. Red is food things (dinner, lunch), blue is things that don't change from week-to-week, green is things that require special uniforms at school (so I make sure laundry is done), and black is everything else.

The actual board is from Costo, and it came with all the markers, eraser, cleaner and magnets. It measures 2 feet by 3 feet. It would be neater, but I have a hard time writing up against the wall (carpel tunnel syndrome). Anyhow, it's mostly for the kids and dh, so they know what's going on.

It's not ideal, but for now it's serving the purpose

Oh, I heard back from the MomAgenda lady, and I'm sad. Just a snip from the reply is, "I happen to admire Gloria Steinem; however I included quotes from notable people I do not particularly admire as well, saying things I do not necessarily agree with. That is one way for our company to be inclusive, and respectful, of all mothers and their unique life choices."

I sure don't feel that the Gloria Steinem quote is respectful of my life choices!

Well, I guess some people just don't get it. How is it being respectful of all mothers and their choices when you're offending a huge segment of mothers? Surely the woman at MomAgenda must have realized this was an inflammatory and very controversial quote? And not really especially insightful, either...

Willa,
I recently went shopping for a calendar style white board. I wanted one of these from The Board Dudes. I had the idea from another homeschooling mom. She told me that they can be found at Walmart and Target locally. I could not find them at target.com (and I won't look at Walmart), but they do stock them here in the Northeast. At Target, they cost under $15 (almost half the price Board Dudes online ordering site).

Incidentally, when I went shopping for ours, they were temporarily out of stock, but I did find one that that works better for our kitchen with a black frame with a translucent calendar. (My husband is more picky about home decor than me. Our space is small and the black and clear is not so noticeable as the white would stick out against our blue painted walls). We hung it next to our basement door along with a matching black framed seagrass bulletin board (again, I purchased for under $15). For some reason the black framed boards are not on the website. This week at Target, I noticed they have a new black framed board that is half magnetic dry erase and half seagrass bulletin board which they did not have before. They have a nice selection of several types of calendar boards with and without magnets, some smaller ones that are for the fridge, as well as plain pastel dry erase boards.

HTH..

Blessings,

Thank you, Lisa, for the ideas on color-coding and the picture, and thanks Kristina for the ideas on the different varieties -- that is helpful and gives me some ideas!

I just found this thread and would just like to add that I am using Michelle's palnner for the first time and love it so far. We usually have a Traditional calendar on the wall so it is nice for me to have the new feast days handy so I rmember to cover them with the children. I like the month before the weekly layout. I also like to see the whole day at a glance, including what I plan to make for dinner so I started using the menu section just for shopping lists. The little columns at the side are too small for my shopping lists anyway.

Nina responded to Lisa on the Momagenda Blog. Blech! Sounds like she has the same people writing her responses as Starbucks has writing theirs. I'm really very bummed. She's missed the point entirely. In order to be inclusive, she's been offensive. Better no quotes, than those quotes...Too bad too. The planner is a great format and it's so pretty...But, pretty is as pretty does and this is not pretty down the homestretch...

This the choice of this quote in a mother's planner just shows how saturated the world has become with s*x. Until it is put in its rightful place---the marital bed---and looked upon in the rightful way---sacred---this mind thought and justification is inevitable.

Elizabeth, I wish you'd respond with this comment on her blog. And other ladies, too. Maybe if Nina sees that enough mothers find that quote offensive, she'll rethink what she considers "inclusive." I read through the entire planner, and the vast majority of the quotes were just fine. A few that I wouldn't have chosen, but they didn't offend me like this one. I agree that it would be better to have no quotes at all, if she is trying to be that inclusive.

A plug for Michele's Catholic Woman's Daily Planner;
I have taken some of the quotes found on her weekly pages and used them for copywork for my boys! The ones that really inspire me, I copy and post on the fridge!
Thanks, Michele!

God Bless,

I don't much care for day planners. I use my Franklin Covey outdated pages (from June still, I think) as grocery lists. I was very much put out about the momagenda ones when I read about going on vacation without the kids and stirring up summer like a maitai. Besides, I hate pink.

Here's what I posted to Nina's blog:

Nina,
The quote did provoke thought but I don't think it's what you intended. The Steinam quote is is not neutral. It's not inclusive or respectful. It is very disrepectful towards women who have chosen to save sex for marriage and/or to be wives and mothers at home instead of pursuing a career. I've recommended your planner to a thousand women easily (literally), but I was most chagrined to find that this quote was buried in there. Almost every woman in my readership would be offended by that quote. Moreover, they are moms--and often that means that the planner is in a public place in their homes or vans. The quote is really not appropriate reading for inquisitive children, either.

We'll see if it's approved.
