I can't wait to hear more suggestions for great picture books "around the world" and around the Americas and states. This is revving me up for the new "school year" and what helps make homeeducating a joy. (You can tell I did not have a good geography education.) Thank you everybody for this thread.

What a great thread! You've all read my mind, in that I'm planning to explore more geography with the kids in the coming year.
You've given me lots of ideas and things to take a look at.
Thank you!

I am just skimming this thread but wanted to mention that Faith at Dumb Ox Academy put up a page Around the World in Fifth Grade that might be helpful.

I have Faith's schedule all printed out and have been looking at it. She has some great suggestions for saint readings that I need to look into.
I hate to say it, though, but knowing my ds's temperament, if I planned out this unit that thoroughly, then I would lose his interest for sure. He came up with this project on his own and I really need to respect that for him. Although I will help and guide and suggest, I am really going to let him follow his own interests as far as content. Sure as I start assigning readings and dictating content, he will lose all interest and it will be a battle from there out. Do any of you have kids like this? It really isn't a discipline issue, because he WILL do it if I assign it. But all the joy is gone and that is what I am trying to avoid. Last thing I want to do is take his good idea and beat it to death with planning!! Besides, it's only geography. Whatever he learns will be a good thing!

My kids are like that, Theresa.
I am thinking that a looser format like you use with your 10yo might work with mine of the same age, though. He likes to learn and I'm sure would be grateful for the attention.
But if I were to do something like that with him, I would just grab the books and go with wherever it led.

Another great listing of books/unit studies by state and country is atHomeschool Share. The list combines ones that are FAIR books with ones that are available on the Homeschool Share unit studies page.

Yes, Willa, I think that is where we are headed. I want to be ready with alot of great books and other resources so that he can follow whatever path he chooses. Our library is so pathetic that we really can't depend on it for much, so I have got to purchase alot of stuff to have on hand. I guess I am just trying to anticipate where he may lead so as to be ready for it. I posted on my blog about my trepidations regarding assigning him any readings for this project-don't want to be a kill joy. But I am definitely not above planting some seeds by suggesting some excellent resources and ideas for what he might include in his notebook. We will start off with som introductory books that I am sure he will like, in order to get a feel for where he might want to go. I am hoping he will want to really explore the whole world,
but truthfully, if he wants to spend a month in Timbuktu and become a Timbuktu expert, that is OK with me, too.

Here is what I came up for the continents. This is mostly for Dominique (7). I just want to cover a few countries per continents with him. Next year we will do more with the country tour. The 4 and 9 yrs old will follow along too, but the focus is for the second grader.
Notice that it is somewhat incomplete. I couln't find anything for Antartica, and only have one book for South America (not even a FIAR). I have included some really neat titles that we own from the Mater Amabilis curriculum. They are like documentaries in a book format, with each page featuring one or two full color photographs. Perfect for my second grader.
North America
Canada: Very Last First Time
By Truck to the North: My Arctic Adventure
USA: Night of the Moonjellies
South America
Brazil: The Great Kapok Tree, start the Rainforest Unit
Oceania
Australia: Pumpkin Runner
Solomon Island: Jungle Islands: My South Sea Adventure, finish the Rainforest Unit
Antartica
?
Europe
Italy: Papa Picolo
Vendela in Venice
Red Sail to Capri
France: Mirette and the High Wire
Madeline
Charlotte in Giverny
Charlotte in Paris
Asia
Japan: A Pair of Red Clog
Gradfather’s Journey,
Russia: Another Celebrated Dancing Bear
Sovietrek: a Journey by Bicycle Across Russia
China: Story about Ping
A Little Tiger in the Chinese Night
The Children of China: an Artist’s Journey
Africa
Egypt: The Giraffe that Walk to Paris
My Sahara Adventure: 52 Days by Camel,
Hippos in the Night: Autobiographical Adventures in Africa
Africatrek: A Journey by Bicycle

I forgot to add that we will read about the saints suggested in CHC from various saint's books we own and add them to our notebooks.
And of course we will do the same for the saints we will study throughout the year from Cay’s Catholic Mosaic book.

I wsa browsing the Dover Publications this morning and found a few items that made me think of the Around the World thread here. The Around the World Coloring Book has 30 country's maps, national flags, landmarks, and natural resources. The Brides from Around the World Paper Dolls features 28 costumes. The Flags of the World: 96 Full-Color Stickers look lovely.
There are lots of cool USA stuff too that I haven't looked into but I did notice this State Birds Stickers and Seals!
Lots of stuff is 25% off in celebration of their 65th anniversary, I think I really do need to put together an order...

I've been browsing through the Dover stuff, too, Jennifer. And, I'll have to double check, but I think shipping is free with this anniversary sale they're having?

Saints by country, continent, geographical region
I thought this might be helpful as a resource in addition to the saints featured in the LPs.

I went to the Dover site yesterday, and boy was that fun!! Here are a few more coloring books that caught my eye:
African Plains
Arctic and Antarctic Life
Traditional Designs from India
Rain Forest
Historic American Landmarks
Christmas Around the World
Traditional Houses from Around the World
Chinese Fashions
Bridges of the World
I ended up with 14 books for right at the $50 free shipping level. And I only ordered one of each--I figure we can rip out the pages that particular children are interested in, and copy those that we fight over .
I've kept up my Enchanted Learning subscription. Is that still the go-to-site for printables, or am I behind the times?
Just trying to get my ducks in a row...
