Okay, I'm planning to start the first week in September, too. I realize that some of us may do the tour in a different order than what is laid out in the lesson plans, so here's what I'm thinking: we could post general resources on this thread, then start a new thread for each continent. If someone is touring a continent "out of order," then they just start a thread for that continent and share their resources and ideas. Or, if one of us comes across a resource we plan to use on one of the continents that hasn't been studied yet, just post it on its respective thread, starting a thread for that continent if there isn't one yet. Does that make sense? In the end, we'll have 8 threads dedicated to CHC Tour the Continents: this thread, and a specific thread for each continent.
BTW, Nina, I LOVE Stories of the Child Jesus From Many Lands...I hadn't thought of using it for this project. Thank you!

We are doing something like this...since I currently have to take a toddler off of my head, I will just post a link:
Hands-on Geography
With all of this we are adding TONS of read-alouds. I am trying to compile a list, but I think we will just play it by ear...read a book, plot it on the map kinda thing.
HTH!

Dawn, we're going the CHC, too, and I love this idea--thank you for thinking of it!
Is everyone planning on spending one month per continent? We'll start with North America, but I was thinking of two months here before moving on because there is just so much. I certainly don't mind being a month behind everyone else , I was just wondering if anyone intends to focus more on one continent or if that just too overwhelming for these ages (this will be for my 1st and 3rd graders, although 5th grader will join in).
Also, I just checked out the Pole-to-Pole series from my library--is that intended to be a "preview" to this year's plan, or viewed in pieces as we work our way through the year? Since it's four videos, I was thinking of viewing it in pieces in August to get everyone in the groove.

I went to the public library today and found some old copies of National Geographic magazine for 10 cents apiece in the used book store there. There are lots of pictures of animals and landmarks that could be used throughout the Tour the Continents project.

I'm planning on studying each continent for one month. Not that more time would be too overwhelming for my kids, but it would be too overwhelming for me this year!
I think we can all just move at our own pace through this. My idea is to just share ideas on this forum. We don't have to all be in the same place at the same time.

I think watching that video was Theresa's idea...I don't know how she's doing it, but I suppose you could do it either way: in pieces or all at once. You're the boss!

Dawn, the national Geographics ar a great idea. Now I finally have a use for the 10 years worth (at least) my mom has been trying to pawn off on me!
Molly,
I don't know how long we will spend on each continent. I'm letting ds take the lead on this-it is his project. I am just along as a "guide." I have a feeling he will want to globe-hop a bit as he tends to get bored easily. That's cool with me.
Pole to Pole was my idea. I am thinking of using it as a sort of kick-off to the project. It is a great example of how interesting traveling the globe can be and I am hoping it will inspire ds a bit. We will be doing some introductory stuff anyway with Hungry Planet and Material World among others.
I have no idea which continent we will start with as it will be entirely up to ds.
I am also thinking about other things we can add to the project, such as calculating distances using map scales (great for fractions and ratios) and some cooking ideas.
I have the book Loaves of Fun, which has recipes from around the world so I am sure we will use that.
I am also thinking of studying an artist from each region using the book Discovering Great Artists
But what other types of activities do you ladies envision?

No need to apologize...I hope it didn't sound like I was trying to kick you out of the thread! I just wanted to be sure you knew what we were talking about to avoid possible future disappointment that we weren't listing resources for older kids. But, since Theresa's ds is 11, I guess there will be some "older kid" resources, too!

Oh yes, Dawn, I understand that. I wasn't offended whatsoever, just wanted you to be sure that I understood what you all were talking about.
I'm still trying to figure out what to do regarding resources, etc. It'll take me awhile, as I have so much planning to do. But when I do, and if it seems applicable, I'll surely post.

We plan on doing Tour the Continents as well and my plans sound similar to all of yours:
Notebook (binder with paper) divided by continent, pages for saints, animals, mountains/rivers/lakes, landmarks, etc. We will then Tour the Countries within the continents adding to the notebook country flags, maps of countries, capital and larger cities, famous people, governments, and other country info. I see it as a long term, multi-year project possibly continuing whenever geography is discussed. It will be a geography notebook kind of like CM's Book of Centuries (which we will be doing in a modified way as well), but for geography. It can keep the children of all ages doing work together, which I like a lot.

This is what I'm thinking, too. I'm going to combine the Tour the Countries and the Tour the continents and key it to the FIAR books for each country. And definitely notebooks and not posters. I don't think I'll do lapbooks because I find that babies in my arms make lots of cutting and pasting impractical..

Will be doing that too, and the fourth grader will have a notebook for the states course also key to the FIAR books.
I highly recommend Holy Friends: Thirty Saints and Blesseds of the Americas for the North and South America countries and the states I got it from my local Catholic bookstore and it's perfect for that age group.
It's going to be fun to share ideas.

So, will your fourth grader do the continents and Cuontries too or just the CHC states that's in the 4th grade plans? I can't quite decide what to do with my fourth grader. The CHC plans seemed sort of flat to me...

We also got Holy Friends. It is beautiful!---I love how concise the chapters are for each "friend", as well.
Also using along with it: the Saints of the Americas Coloring Book (and the Glory Stories Coloring books that correlate to the different nations/saints) for the younger members who need to "be doing something" while they are being read aloud to!
I think I am going to enjoy this year around much more than I did the year using just the format of the CHC lesson plans because I am making it more *fun*..... and looser....a little bit of this and that. And we're going to just touch on as many nations and areas as possible, just to introduce them. (For instance I got books for Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Puerto Rico as well.) I need to relax about it this year----everything has to pass by my "am I enjoy doing this as well?" test.

Nina,
Do you have a list of the glory stories correlated with the countries? That is a great idea. I totally agree with you that some hefty "fun" needs to be added to the bsic CHC plans. They seem a bit formulaic, which is too bad when you consider that studying geography, with all its diversity, should be anything but formulaic.
Let me see if I can dig up the FIAR list that correlates book titles with oc**tries...

These are the Coloring Books we are using:
Gospel on Five Fingers (M. Teresa)---India
Viva Cristo Rey (Knights of Columbus)--Mexico
My Battle Name is Jose Luis---Mexico
Fresh Flowers in Winter (Juan Diego, OL of G)---Mexico
Jesus, I Trust in You (Faustina)---Poland
Treasure in Heaven (Katherine Drexel)---America
God's Little Flower (Therese)---France
Let the Children Come to Me (Imelda Lambertini)---Italy
I Want to Be a Christian (Kateri)---Canada
Cecilia, Saint of the Catacombs----Italy/ Rome, specifically
St. Joseph/Stations of the Cross (origins/where Jesus walked on earth)---Israel
There are also audios which we are not using, including:
Joan of Arc---France
Clare of Assisi--Italy
Rose of Lima---Peru
Martin de Porres---Peru
Maximilian Kolbe---Poland
Anthony of Padua---Italy
I got a set of Sharpie Pens in new *beautiful* shades at Costco for each of my little ones (mainly to use on our Dover Stained Glass books but they will work of course on any coloring books), and we have prismacolor pencils for the older ones. We're going to make our Holy Friends as colorful as possible!
God bless you today!

Yes, he will. I don't think I could keep him out of our Rowing around the world tour. He did some of the Tour a Country last year, but we weren’t very consistent and I didn't integrate the FIAR books.
This year I plan to include the three youngest (4-7-9) into a tour of the world and states with FIAR adding the CHC resources. This month we will work on a geography notebook. Integrating ideas from Kim and Donna-Marie.
Here is what I had writing down in Felix’s (now a sixth grader) old fourth grade lesson plan. I only had the titles from FIAR vol. 4 for him but this time around I want to use all four volumes. I’ll be working on completing the list this afternoon. I’ll also try to work on the Country one. I’ll post an update when done.
North Carolina (our State): Higgins Bend Song and Dance
Western/Southwestern Region
Arizona: Roxaboxen
Idaho: Mailing May
Montana: Cowboy Charlie (this is a real favorite here!)
New Mexico: The Gullywasher
Central Region
Missouri: Cowboy Charlie
Wisconsin: The Raft
Southern Region
South Carolina: The Hickory Chair
North Central/North Eastern Region
Massachusetts: The Hatmaker’s Sign
New York: Albert
Vermont: Snowflake Bentley

Here is an extensive FIAR classification list. If you scroll down to "geography," you'll see countries/continents/states in the categories.

The list seems to only have volumes 1-3. Someone probably never added volume 4 in when it came out. Wow! I've seen this list before! It's 103 printed pages!!!!

Thanks Elizabeth! I have had this link in my favorites before but as a result of numerous computer crashes I had lost it. I wasn’t sure which would be hardest; to try to find it again or to just grab my books and figure it out.
