Lissa,
I am just imagining your Bonny Glen in San Diego. You will be writing on the patio while your children are scampering around the bouginvillia, rose bushes, avocado and orange trees. I have only met Lissa once in person but if anyone can make a storybook home it is her!

Aw, thanks, Mary Chris! I always say that the Bonny Glen is a state of mind, not a place... (Which means we don't always live there, but we do try!)
Thanks for all this information, everyone. Every piece helps. I (gulp) really think this is going to happen!

Lissa,
I just saw this and your pm! (It's 9:00 a.m. PST)
If you have a minute, call me! I pm'd my phone number. I tried writing things out, but I sounded like a real estate agency advertisement!
I never realized all the connections to San Diego here on these boards. Please, please look us up if anyone comes back out here. We're good for a nights stay and, at the very least, a meal or two!

Okay, now raise your hand if you're suddenly insanely jealous of Erica, who apparently lives in paradise and is about to get an amazing neighbor!

Hi, Lissa,
We lived in Oceanside for six months and I'd go back in a flash. We still pine for the Vista farmers market, handfulls of flowers for a pittance, the best baby lettuce we've ever had, tables of fresh produce year round. It was dreamy to glimpse the ocean on errands through town and to visit it whenever. Loved it!

That's me raising my hand!
We honeymooned in San Diego and fell in love with it, *especially* La Jolla.
So beautiful.

I saw Lissa's pm before I read these posts, and truly, I was thinking how could San Diego compare to beautiful Virginia - I've never even been there, but you all make it sound wonderful . But, to sit here and read about my "paradise" and......to think about the possibility of someone I consider celebrity status actually coming to live here.....and then to see my kids faces when I tell them the author of the Martha and Charlotte books might be moving here.......well, our heads are spinning!!

Hi Lissa,
We lived in San Diego for almost five years (moved up here to the NW in '01).
We lived in Ramona to begin with. It is up in the hills above San Diego, very "country" (lots of orange grove ranches, horses, that sort of thing), and most homes there have big lots and are somewhat cheaper. The scenery is breathtaking. Off the beaten path we'd see dusty old roads with intriguing signs like 'Garnet Mine Trail.' Our boys would climb the bouldered hills behind our property and we'd take out the binoculars and spot them at the top, waving frantically at us. A road-runner would scurry around our deck every morning (it didn't 'meep-meep' though ).
Coming from flat ol' Chesapeake, Virginia as we did, it was pretty exciting.
There were about six of us Catholic homeschooling families up in the hills and we did our own park days, etc. We were relaxed and loose-knit. My husband worked at the Naval Hospital San Diego so learned all the quickie back-roads in getting there, but it took 50 minutes to get there.
We moved "down the hill" after a few years, and lived right in San Diego (Navy housing) when my dh started working on Coronado Island.
There are many homeschoolers around the area. Lots of the hsers in the North part of San Diego County go to St. Michael's parish in Poway (in fact we met up with some of them again at our son's graduation from Thomas Aquinas last month). Some go to St. Mark's in San Marcos. There was park day in Poway every week- I think all year 'round because the weather is so nice
We used to attend mass at noon on First Fridays at the Italian parish, Our Lady of the Rosary in the Little Italy section of San Diego, attracting yet another loose-knit group of homeschoolers. They had park days closer into San Diego- like Mission Beach (not far from La Jolla). We used to connect with that group once a month after mass, and go to park days with them.
I have a friend who is trying to sell her home in Escondido (or Valley Center?). She says the housing market has stalled somewhat because their house is not selling that quickly. So the housing prices are high like they are up and down both coasts, but maybe dropping a little just in time for you guys to move there .
As far as parishes other than St. Michael's in Poway and St.Mark's in San Marcos, there is also an Indult mass, Holy Cross, and several nice Byzantine rite churches in the area- Ruthenian, Maronite, Melkite, etc. So many churches, so little time .
We lived an unbelievable five minutes' drive from Mission San Diego de Alcala, and went there occasionally for Mass and Confession. We loved strolling around the beautiful walled garden afterward.
I'm sure you'll have no problem hooking up with other homeschoolers. If we'd stayed in the area after my husband finished his Navy career, we'd have probably bought up in Temecula (we were in Navy quarters before that so didn't have any equity in a home).
Okay, feel free to message privately if you'd like more information. I'll be praying that everything goes smoothly for you all... and, I can empathize. My dh husband was offered a job in May in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and drove 3,000 miles to begin working earlier this month. I'm staying behind with the children for the summer to sell our home. It's pretty insane really. St. Joseph is our favorite saint right now!
God bless you,
~Sue (dh Mike, Aaron, Christopher, Matthew, Anthony, Mary Rose, Elizabeth, Magdalene, Susanna and John)

Oh yikes! New baby brain! SS Peter and Paul is a Holy Day of Obligation here and I clean forgot! Ugh! And just remembered I can't drive so can't get to Mass this evening anyway
Lissa, my neighbour's brother lives near San Diego. I've seen the photos - it looks lovely

Me too! My dh is still disappointed that he was unable to accept a job there, choosing to come to Phoenix instead. The ONLY glitch was housing . Unfortunately for us, the Public Health Service, didn't have a "cost of living" increase for San Diego. I told him this was because they can get a single guy or gal to fill the slots, no problem! I asked him how his supervisor could afford it. Check this out...he was a married guy with no children. His wife had a high paying job. They lived on a boat for six months and lived in a camper/trailer for six months. How's that for an option?
Love,

This fabulous news! Congrats Lissa! You are going to LOVE San Diego. I know I did. Maybe I'll see you and Erica next year. Then both of you can give me advice on homeschool environment/groups!

Now you get another rabbit trail to do -- learn about San Diego -- not the city, but the namesake saint, Saint James the Greater! His feast day is July 25. Santiage de Compostela and much more.
