Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Karen,

I would definately capitalize on his strengths and teach more sight words. Once he is reading and has more confidence then you can hit phonics a little harder through spelling. I use the Writing Road to reading and it is heavy on phonics.

I am also one who does not enjoy teaching reading. I hate the mechanics and slow pace of it. Yes, I do try to disguise that from my children! I love teaching once they are already reading and can then pore over stories together discussing the information. I am a huge reader myself who loves to discuss characters, plots, etc...

Jennifer,

I would think the vision trouble would probably be a factor, especially if it's making her feel nervous or insecure.

(Also, don't some vision experts even discourage independent reading in young children, since their eyes are still developing?)

But, even if she didn't have any vision trouble, I really wouldn't worry about it at age 6.

My oldest was an excellent reader early on, too, but it took her awhile to choose longer chapter books. It also took her awhile to start finishing every chapter book she picked up, but she got there. In her time.

Sometimes, they reach a plateau and just need to rest there awhile, before they're ready to scale the next height.

At age 6, you could just keep reading aloud, maybe with her looking over your shoulder and following along at times. I think Bridget's idea about alternating, in small chunks, is nice, too. I did that with my second child, who was a much later reader than my first.
