Actually, the UK exists in a weird metric/imperial limbo. Many things are still measured the "old" way. I'm sure the doctor's chart has the weight in kilos, but most mothers need to hear it in pounds and ounces to really be able to understand and visualize the size. The length was probably given in centimeters, though, just to keep things interesting. It is the same with people's height: when you fill out a passport application you need your height in metres and centimetres, but most people only know their own height in feet and inches. Road signs are in miles, unless it is roadworks, then it will say "400m".
