It is tres California, too. |

I think it might be universal, though these are not "your mother's" flip flops! They are pretty, decorated, and made from all different material, not just rubber.

Mary Chris helped the girls make the cutest flip-flops at her daughter's birthday party. Maybe she can elaborate on a flip-flop thread.

Here's a link to the first Modesty Thread, where Kathryn posted an essay that does a good job of exploring the pants issue. |

That thread also includes an extensive quote from Love and Responsibility posted by Michele Q that is well worth reading in the context of this conversation.
Incidentally, I have to do a double take on almost every post here as in British English pants means underwear . I know what you mean, but I have to consciously translate everytime I see the word or it starts to conjure up bizarre images .

It's OK. I have the same problem with knickers.

I wear flip flops eight months out of the year. They are cute and inexpensive and look good with most skirts. Because they are cheap, I often buy different colors to match the skirts I wear the most.
There is also a lazyness factor here as well...It is easy to slip on flip flops while holding a chubby baby (no laces) or to quickly toss them off to snuggle in bed for naps/ nurse. I got hooked on them a couple pregnancies ago, when I could not reach my toes !

Yep, that's what we called them when I was a kid and I wore them (or Keds) all summer long.

Me, too. This terminology debate has sparked some interesting discussions...because my dd has no idea what the current definition of the former flip-flop name means.

Regional variations are so funny! The same thing happens in Spanish. Words that are just plain normal words to our family (Cuban) are vulgar in Venezuela where my cousins live. This proved interesting a time or two when we were growing up and my very old and holy grandmother said some pretty shocking things to my cousins (her grandchildren)!
