Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Well, Leonie, you know we've been around this particular tree before in this family. I've sent copies of Fed Up! to my parents. The party line appears to be "Remember, this is an illness just like cancer and it's nobody's fault." Well, certainly it's no one person's fault and nobody wnated this, but the environment in which she is being raised and the one in which her mother was raised do play heavily into the messages she's received and processed and the way she approaches food.

Perfectionism is hard on kids and perfection coupled with dysfunctional family dynamics can leave a child to control the only thing she can control. This chld has a father and two consecutive stepfathers, a half brother, and three stepsiblings--not a lot of stability--but everything LOOKS perfect .

I'm going to visit today. Please pray that the visit is encouraging and peaceful.

I am on the computer late - and saw your post. Many prayers. I know from personal experience how hard this food thing/body image can be....

Well, if I don't find the keys, I'm not going anywhere!

Elizabeth,
I don't go on this post, ever. I find it extreemly difficult to bare. I trust Angie will send me the one's she want's me in on. I saw a comment about your neice on another post. It struck me, because I suffered from anorexia as a teenager into early adulthood. I am so glad she is in the hospital. Everyone around me really didn't know what to do about it. I would get a comment here and there about how skinny I was, but no real strong approach. Over time, I realize that my family was concerned, but really didn't know what to say or do. So when I see that it's being addressed, I am relived for her. Anorexia is tough. After I got the food issue down, I then delt with the follow-up of years of panic attacks. Very common with anorexia. Again, I hope that she is getting all the support she needs to deal with the root of this awful disorder, disease, whatever they call it now. It's awful and lonely.

I do hope that her faith is part of her healing. I was reading a book called, "A Women's Worth" (can't remeber the author). Angie had recommended it to me. There is one line in the book that transformed me. I can't remeber the line, but I do remember the idea. Your body is a gift from God. It is not for you to destroy, just like you wouldn't destroy any gift given to you. Especially when you have a perfectly healthy body. I never looked at my body in this way. I felt so guilty. I felt awful. This was yet another piece to my puzzle of healing my body and most of all healing my faith.

I will keep her in my prayers. This can be an inspirational time for your niece. I hope she is surrounded by wonderful people and that she let's the Holy Spirit touch her.

Love,

Dear Jennifer,
Thanks for sharing. Unfortunately, this went on too long as well. My sister (her mom) has her own eating disorder so it took some time for this to reach intervention. And they both have a very, very long road ahead of them. My prayer is that this is one of those times when a mother is saved by her child and they both emerge healthy and whole.
