Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

It can all start to feel like a form of mental illness after a while, at least in my own obsessive head. I really can drive myself right off the edge. So I have to step back, take a deep breath, and remind myself that somehow I survived with enough brain cells to get through the day, despite having eaten Space Food Sticks, chocolate Pop Tarts, and jello every day of 1973. Not that I have any wish to recreate that particular food era in my own home today, but when I think about that, I suddenly feel a lot better about my own choices.

Yes! This is exactly what I do! I sit and wonder sometimes what toxins might be stored in the fat of the meat I buy at the butcher or grocery store

Yeah . . . I don't want to glorify junk food, but I know that what that kind of stuff represented to my mother, who grew up on a farm (both my parents did), was, "I do not have to be a kitchen slave." My mom now is very interested in health generally, and went out and bought coconut oil because somebody who gave a talk at her retirement community said that that was now the thing to do -- which is exactly how she put it -- but boy, once she got off the farm, she got as far off it as it was possible to go, and Space Food Sticks looked like The Best Thing Ever. And of course, when you had the astronauts coming on TV to tell you that Space Food Sticks and Tang were what everybody who was anybody lived on in space . . . well, who was there to tell you any differently?

So, I'm glad that we have access to a greater body of information about our food and how it gets to our table, and that there are people willing to call things to public attention. That is a great gift. But how we shake all of that out into our daily lives is a matter of prudential judgment, and how we get food onto our tables is made even more complex by all the other demands and tensions in our lives.

It's worth considering that even if we were all growing and raising our own food organicially, there might be long seasons where whole food groups disappeared from our tables, due to crop failure, livestock diseases, drought, and the like. Even if we were in a situation where we controlled all possible variables, so that we knew beyond the shadow of a doubt what was and wasn't going into our food, we still couldn't control everything, and our level of nutrition might suffer just as much as it would on the Standard American Diet (which is admittedly cruddy). Anyone in any situation is going to be making the best of what life is handing out at a given moment in a given place, and no one -- I think -- should be unduly stressed out by food choices.

This, at least, is the pep talk I give myself when I am stressed out by food and grocery shopping.

I know. Like something out of a futuristic novel of the Edwardian era, but real.
