I don't mean to be nitpicky but traditionally women, except in a few countries, didn't mantillas at all. Women wore hats or scarves.

I'm pretty sure he means traditionally, where veils are worn.

That's how I read Christine's meaning as well.

I haven't made veil wearing "required" until FHC age, which seems to be the trend at our parish. Most little girls (maybe ages 3 and up?) do veil, but the veil sometimes gets taken off halfway through. :) My girls like to keep their veils on (like Mommy ;) ), but I have no problem with my babies/toddlers being bonnet-less when they're in those stages of not wanting to wear hats. I don't let them play with their veil/bonnet/hat, though--it's either wear it nicely, or I put it away. ;) |

This has been our approach as well. It seems to be pretty standard among families with little girls - there is a great deal of understanding when it comes to littles. We don't stress about littles and a veil...or whether it stays in place perfectly...or not. And, like Celeste, it is not a toy or to become a distraction during Mass. If it begins to be played with, I gently remove it and put it in my bag.

Can I piggyback a question about hats onto this thread? I know that the current practice is to wear veils, but is a hat ok, too? I have a hard time keeping a veil on; seems like a baby is always grabbing.

I wore hats and bandanas for years before I had the courage to wear a mantilla (mostly black out of preference but I can't bring myself to wear black during the Easter season or on feast days of Our Lady, so I switch to a subtle blue veil for those days). I guess I thought it made me more inconspicuous. I still love wearing cloche-style hats and wish more women would bring this fashion back!
Re: little girls. I've decided to adopt the tradition a good friend of mine does with her girls. They are uncovered or in a simple bonnet until FHC. Then the daughter is presented with her first official veil in a ceremony where she trades in her 'bridal' FHC veil for the veil of young ladies... it's a rite of passage.
So my 4 year old bright red-red headed daughter goes cover-less for now and is eagerly looking forward to getting a veil like mama after FHC.

I don't know much about veils but I do know "slickery" hair and if you want clips that will stay in better than most, try these bendable snap clips
They come in a variety of colors and sizes so you can pick something that will be less obvious against the veil (I've seen them in the little girls section in colors like pinks and blues too). |
|
|
The only problem with clips like that, that do work great in fine hair, is that they won't easily go through the lace like a bobby pin does. And you definitely CAN just sew a couple of simple stitches to hold the clip in place, which I've tried, but for some reason it starts to get annoying to us. You can't always anticipate if your dd is going to wear a pony tail, hair down, barette...and the style of the day does sometimes dictate the veil-holder placement.
So...just offering that for consideration...it is nice to be able to decide at the moment exactly where to clip, and to be able to clip through the lace veil for a secure hold. |
|
|
Jen,
I make a buttonhole in the top of the veil and then cut it open for these clips to fit in. I found that to be much easier than sewing them in and they do stay put very well on fidgety little ones. You can also just cut a slit and put some Fray Check on it to keep the slit from growing.

While it technically doesn't "fray", it can stretch and/or tear. The Fray Check keeps it from doing that.

I just want to thank everyone for the recommendations and help.
I ordered from Lily's Veils for my older daughter and myself - the starter veils are just lovely. (I am going to make one using the pattern for my 4 year old) Lily is very helpful and kind, and I would buy from her again.

That's a really interesting idea, Michele! I hadn't thought of just snipping open a buttonhole and adding fray check so that I could use the larger clips!! It's a great idea though because Jodie's right - those larger clips work so much better! And...I'm thrilled that I spent yesterday afternoon tidying and re-organizing all my sewing supplies because I know EXACTLY where my fray check is now!
Marilyn,
I'm so glad you're pleased with your new veils! I somehow lost my favorite brown veil. So, I ordered a new navy chantilly veil and I'm so pleased with it! It's just lovely, with a beautiful soft lace and drape!

I've really enjoyed all the nice ideas for veil wearing!
Spiral hair pins like this or this style or this version would work quite well. They're thinner than bobby pins or clips and shouldn't tear lace as easily and stay in place nicely, especially with longer hair. We've found the Conair version at Walmart.
I'm very blessed to have been given my mother's mantilla, which she wore for many years when very few women were veiling anymore. I also have a gold on black Spanish veil which I wore for dd's wedding. Like Jen, I appreciate the softness and the way it drapes. Many cherished memories attached to wearing both.

A tip for anyone with veils of thinner "fine" lace like Jen linked above: if the lace ever tears, which has happened twice with mine(which is quite similar to Jen's), you can use quilter's invisible thread to mend the tear. It has worked great, and really doesn't show any more than a fine line which just looks like it's part of the lace, maybe a *slight* defect, not too visible.

I've recently started wearing a head covering.
3 years ago I had a bad experience with 2 babies 13 months apart who wanted to pull on my mantilla all the time. I spent more time fidgeting with it than I did paying attention to the Mass. Then I felt like I was distracting those around me with the fidgeting. And I always left Mass with a birds nest of hair, lace, and bobby pins atop my head. So I got discouraged and stopped.
Then last month I really started feeling called to it again. Not wanting to go through the frustration again, I started looking for options other than a mantilla. I crocheted a snood...I love it! It does the job, but is up and away from my face, and it's so low profile that the toddler doesn't even notice it. Just an idea for others with littles who might also get frustrated. I did it with a sock weight yarn, so it's really even less "chunky" than what's shown in the pattern: http://www.depictthis.net/2012/09/how-to-crochet-1940s-snood .html
Also, prior to the snood, I was looking at Garlands of Grace. They had some really beautiful options. I just wanted to mention to anyone here who might stumble upon that site that they are very vocally anti-Catholic. The posted something on their FB page about how they feel burdened by those who stand with the Catholic church and that they wish we would all wake up and follow the Word of God instead. They went on to say how they were, at the time, in the process of converting a young Catholic girl who was staying with them. So sad because their items are beautiful, but we just can't support that kind of a business.

And their starter and Spanish lace veils are on sale right now too! Free shipping still today until midnight!
My girls were interested, so we purchased the starter veils for them and they are so pleased with them that they now each want another color. I'm still on the fence about veiling, but it seems such a lovely way to set our time in front of the Blessed Sacrament apart from other dress-up events, which has been a struggle for me with a very limited wardrobe.
