Their website is down for maintenance or updating or something. Have you tried interlibrary loan? I know you have to organize that way in advance but most libraries belong to the service.

How do you suggest we use the additional books listed in Mosaic, but not given a study guide for?

You can read them and have a conservation about them. Ask "wondering" questions like, I wonder why . . . or I like the part about ____, what did you like? . . .What does this remind you of? . . . Why do you think the artist chose these colors? While you are reading stop and ask the child to predict before turning the page.
For activities, if the book does not suggest something to you, you can either have them retell, or make a narration, or draw a picture, or write a prayer, or act something out, or bake something suggested in the story-maybe a food associated with the feast day or saint. Pick one thing maybe that best fits your child's abilities/interests.
We can't wait to hear all the neat things people do with the Mosaic titles!
Margot
P.S. I should have let Cay answer this, but I am just so excited about the possibilities with Mosaic!

We thought it best to ask the ones using this new resource. What would work best for you?
Yahoo eloop?
Blog?
Forum?

I think a blog is not as good of a place to share ideas between a variety of different individuals. It's not good for discussion among a group - but it is a great place to post resources because it is so easy to put up pictures and links. I personally prefer forum format to yahoo groups for the ease of keeping a particular topic or idea together in one place.

We have also begun collecting book titles of new religious books that we are finding and that are being newly published. We would like to have all these titles collected into one general area. |

That is a great idea - new books are published all the time. I thought I had a pretty good handle on children's books of Central America/Caribbean since I did a bunch of research about a year ago, but hadn't heard of the book A Gift of Gracias: The Legend of Altagracia which Margot mentioned as being part of Catholic Mosaic (don't have a copy yet - waiting 'til next week to get it at our conference). Since it is a brand new 2005 release it obviously came out after I had done my search. I for one would love a forum that would keep everyone up to date with new releases or obscure titles we may not have come across. Anyway, I am very excited to get my copy, see what books it includes and share ideas with everyone here!

I almost posted the question there as well. I wasn't sure.

what if we open another forum called "Catholic Mosaic?" That way, you could have a thread for every book and it would all get archived in a neat and tidy way. We'd know where to go for all things pertaining to Catholic Mosaic...
Just an idea.We have the technology (well, Tim does ) |
|

Sounds like a wonderful idea to me. I'll let you and Tim discern the details.
I'm not up for any more eloops either and I don't multi-task my blogs very well.
I'd be honored to have the forum here and it'd be great to be able to direct people this way. Thank you, Elizabeth.

Martha,
I appreciate your questions and would love to address them.
We're getting ready to head to the nursing home for PawPaw's (and all other June b-day residents') b-day party today.
More later today...

I've emailed Tim. When then forum is up, we'll move this thread and the others. Then, can keep all Mosaic ideas under one roof.

I 2nd Elizabeth's wonderful idea for a Catholic Mosaic forum! It sounds like the perfect solution!
Thank you for the suggestions Margot! I'm relatively new to using these real learning and CM methods and it does not come naturally to me at all.

OK, I don't have the book yet (soon!), but I do have a couple questions that might help in my planning for next year.
1. Would the combination of mosaic titles, suggested readings, and the ideas from the future discussion forum make it feasible to do unit-studies based on Mosaic, sort of like FIAR? I love the idea of a liturgical year-based unit study.
2. My library is so pathetic. Do you think hillside or another organization would consider carrying package deals on mosaic titles? Perhaps several packages beginning with 12 books (one for each month) and going up to full packages? It sure would make my life simpler to just click once and buy the whole she-bang (sort of like Sonlight does).
Just wondering.

Hillside Education might post the booklist at their site later. I know it was suggested. |

I just checked again and the list is there! Thank you Cay for that - I have worked out that I have 22 already, thank goodness!, that is a good start for me - we are, of course waiting patiently down here for our shipment of Catholic Mosaic and I thought that I would post this just as a reminder to anyone who hasn't seen that list yet and would like to. Catholic Mosaic's book list from Hillside Education I have done this because I think the reason it took me so long to find it as I looked at Hillside's home webpage with Catholic Mosaic on it and couldn't see the list, this time I clicked on Catholic Mosaic listed down the side and it took me to another similar looking webpage that did have the list.

My Literature Alive has arrived. I love it, I'm reading it by jumping all over the place I just can't decide where to start, there are so many places, so I'm nibbling, or is it feasting? Thank you for all your hard work.
