This has been such a wonderful conversation about the praying for the poor souls. I am excited about using holy water for them! I also wanted to post one of my favorite prayers:
Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.
I can't remember the source for this, though, so if anyone recognizes it, please add the source . When I learned it I was told that every sincere repetition will release 100 souls from purgatory.
(Correction... I changed the 1,000 to 100... typo )

Jesus gave this portion of the prayer to St. Gertrud the Great, "Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory". The latter part was added later to include living people as well.
Very powerful prayer!

This will be the next prayer we memorize! And what a great idea to add it to grace before meals! Thanks everyone!

If you say: Eternal Father, I offer to you, the Most Precious Blood...
then you can set the whole prayer to the tune of Johnny Appleseed, and it is quite easy to learn.
When I learned it, it was at an All Saints party some years ago. The kids and adults learned the song together, and whoever sang it ten times got a fun
size $1,000 grand candy bar for helping to save 1,000 souls. This was a huge hit- lots of fun for everyone.
So it is the St. Gertrude prayer... I wasn't sure and completely overlooked it at the very top of the page Pilgrim linked . We sing it every morning.
