Wow, really? That's amazing. I'll have to try that.
I've been cooking a lot of chick peas lately, because they tend to cook relatively quickly and painlessly, and you can do so much with them -- I like to toss the fresh-cooked and cooled chick peas with some oil and spices (curry spices, or chili powder) and roast them in the oven until they're crispy. Makes a great pop-in-your-mouth snack.

We have very hard water here. I used half tap water and half bottled water, and the beans cooked much more rapidly and were tender.
Have to try chick peas...

Ok, we are going to have to try bottled water next week. I didn't have any in the house. It'll be pasta premavera tonight...
I never thought to roast chick peas. What a great idea.

Do the chick peas smell when you cook them. Years ago I tried it, and it smelled so strongly, I never really tried again, but I do like roasted chickpeas, and dry is so much less expensive!

Just reading this! I've learned, after trying to cook beans for the 20 years we've lived here, that I definitely need to use filtered water, or bottled water. Thankfully, we have a filter for our drinking water so I don't have to buy the bottles. It makes a huge difference. Before, whether I added salt or not, sugar or not, baking soda or not ... they were hard after hours and hours of cooking. Using the filtered water, and soaking overnight, they cook much more quickly and taste great.

Lindsay, I haven't noticed their smelling too much. As beans go, I find them very pleasant overall -- much better than lentils, for example. I want to like lentils, and I do actually cook them fairly often, but except for the red ones that are impossible to find around here, I really don't like them that much.
To roast chick peas, I cook them as usual (most recipes for roasted chick peas call for canned, but it's just as easy and significantly cheaper to do dried ones in the crockpot), drain, rinse, and toss them with oil and spices, till coated. I spread them out in a large baking dish, so that there's just one layer of them, and roast . . . forever, it seems. Till they're thoroughly brown and dried out and you think they're going to be burned. Every so often I shake them around in the pan so that they cook evenly.
Curry powder and curry spices are very good. I've also done chili powder. I imagine you could toss them with Worcester Sauce and whatever you might use in Chex Mix at Christmas, but I haven't tried that yet. Maybe I'll make that a project for today, since Irish Dance got canceled!

Thanks to Sally, I made my first batch of roasted chick peas yesterday.
They turned out great! OK, so I burned a few- learning curve-, but the rest were very crunchy, and everyone enjoyed them.
