What natural remedies would you suggest for a young female adult to help with depression. This young person is under a doctor's care and has been referred for counselling. But I'm thinking some extra vitamins/minerals etc could only be a boost.

Any suggestions?

Jodie and Melinda stole all my suggestions

I will suggest that Magnesium is easier to absorb through the skin rather than as a supplement. So, you might try frequent Epsom Salt baths and/or magnesium oil instead of a vitamin.

Really? I know I need more magnesium, so I might try this.

I've kept this site http://www.rebuild-from-depression.com/ and book bookmarked for a while.

I'm sure she is already doing this, but of course eating whole foods, lower carbs, no wheat, no sugar, higher protein, no caffeine. Depression usually has low blood sugar as part of it.

About 1 cup of epsom salts per 100lbs of body weight to start and I think you build up to about 2cups/100#, and you need at least 20 minutes in it and you won't want to use soap at that time.. not sure how the soap interacts but if it doesn't irritate your skin you want to just pat yourself dry without washing off the epsom salt water (it'll keep absorbing for a bit afterward this way). (My friend would take a quick shower to get clean and then sit in the bath)

Also, if you're real low, you may find that it makes you feel "off" or slightly "sick" so you might want to back off on the amount and then build up to that.. feeling icky from it is actually a sign you need it more, not that you shouldn't do it.. but you can use less epsom salts in the water and build up to it more gradually.

How often on the baths? We have only a shower in our bathroom. The boys have a tub in their bathroom but I wouldn't use it without a good cleaning first and so I avoid using the tub in their bathroom. The tub usually looks clean . . . . .

I'm not sure how often, I would imagine you'd want to do it more often (at least several times a week) at first and as your body "catches up" then you'd just want to maintain it and it could be less (maybe once a week).

But anything is better than nothing.

Don't forget exercise. I remember hearing somewhere a few months ago that exercise can actually work just as well as anti depressants. Also getting outside for fresh air and sunshine (vitamin d), sounds simple but often simple can be the hardest and best in such situations.

Idk, but I have a friend who does it daily, and her pms gets worse if she slacks off. I bought the magnesium oil because I have the same bathtub-in-the-boys-bathroom issue. Though, Isuppose if you made it part of your daily routine, thectub would stay clean

I stopped with the oil and need to do it again. It really helped with pregnancy insomnia while I was using it. The oil isn't really oil and kind of stings. , but it is supposed to be a form that is easier to absorb than the salt bath.

Somehow I made contact with the author and got an unpublished pdf of her book when I had PPD after my second was born. It helped SO much in my recovery!

It also would not hurt to get a chiropractic adjustment. There is one particular spot in the neck that, when out of adjustment, can cause deep depression and suicidal thoughts.

I want to put in a plug for healthy fats: real butter, nuts, avacado, olive oil, coconut oil, etc.

There is something in fat that the brain just likes. Johns Hopkins University is a pioneer in researching this topic. It is not understood what it is exactly in the fat that soothes the brain- but there is something in it that the brain really needs to stay in top form.

So many women/girls are concerned about calories that fat is often trimmed back in their diets. Then the brain in unhappy. Wild but very true.

I had a very serious bout of depression this summer. The worst I've had in 10 years. My doctor noticed I was also craving chocolate and suggested 5-HTP. It helped so much! Within days. The difference was shocking to me. It is basically serotonin (without the chocolate).

Melinda, I know that the sheathing around the nerves is made from cholesterol (it's one of the reasons why you are not supposed to go low fat for toddlers and babies).. and the sheathing is integral to how well the nerves transmit signals.

As far as the bath method, which I really recommend    , the water should be warm but not hot. When the water is hot it draws fluids out of your body, but not when it's only warm.

Also, Ancient Minerals and Health and Wisdom have some wonderful Magnesium sources.

Oh! I read somewhere that taking a COLD morning shower has been proven to significantly help with depression!

I have yet to attempt to verify this...

I'm pretty sure that would not improve my motivation for getting out of bed AT ALL.

It also couldn't hurt to make sure she is taking a strong probiotic. There have been studies linking gut flora to mental illness. It will also help make sure she is ansorbing the vitamins properly.
