Jill,
Have you had any success in talking to your priest?
We have never had any problems with our home, but we have had our house blessed by a priest. Most of my friends have also had it done, just as a matter of course, not due to any problems, and definitely not like what you have experienced!
My mil suggested getting St. Benedict medals, having them blessed by a Benedictine priest/monk, and placing one over every door and window in your home.
We keep Holy water in the home. One of my girlfriends and I have been wanting to get the blessed salt. We do have crucifixes in every room of our home, except the bathrooms and basement.
We've done an enthronement of our home to the the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
I try to remember to have all the boys say the St. Michael prayer every morning. They do at bedtime, but not always each morning. Ditto for the Guardian Angel prayer.
I had never known about the ouiji boards until I heard it on Johnnette Benkovic's radio program, years ago. She said if one had "dabbled" in any of this, including all that you mentioned, and horoscopes, to take these past behaviors to confession asap. I was so grateful for that information!
One other thing I have done when feeling persecuted or uncomfortable in some way is to say the Holy Name of Jesus over and over. It always gives me peace!
Like all the others have said, I would definitely keep at this until you get a definitive answer from your priest or another one.
What about calling your diocese?
As far as exorcists go, we actually had an official "diocesan" exorcist who said Mass for our Boy Scout Troop during our holiday campout one year. He was the closest priest to the camp, and actually spoke a bit about what he does. He was absolutely fascinating.
My prayers are with you in this situation!!!
In Christ,
Stacy in MI

If you are unable to get anywhere with a Catholic priest I would be contacting an Orthodox priest about a house blessing. The priest will use oil, incense and lots of holy water-including prayers of exorcism in each room.

I found it harder than expected to talk to my Priest after Mass yesterday. So I will have to wait until tomorrow, today he is at the other church in our parish. And I am taking the kids all out to a nature preserve. Someone is VERY grumpy today and I am hoping the change of scenery helps.
I LOVE the idea of the Benedict cross!
I just received my first Crucifix and am actually having a hard time figuring out where to put it! I know I want it in the kitchen but where I had envisioned it is too small of a space. So I am contemplating over the door to the house, seems like a good spot, or over by my Mary area.

Either would be good. It is nice to have one in kitchen where all meals are prepared and its the heart of the home.
Have you an entry way- hall way where the crucifix can be placed ?
We have a crucifix in every bedroom and living area.
I would still suggest a blessed St Benedict medal as well.
I have one at my front door. One on the letter box. You would be surprised what it keep out of our property. Some delivery people can't leave soon enough.
Take care and the right moment will come to talk to your Priest

I almost laughed out loud about the mailbox comment! But that is a fantastic idea!
No entryway here. Just a front door that is only used mainly during the warmer weather and then the kitchen door that is used much more. I am thinking of hanging it over that door.
Do you just use a key-chain size on the mailbox? Out of curiosity?
I will indeed be getting the St Benedict medals and Crucifixes.
And yes you are also right the right time will come soon to talk to my priest. I have only returned to the parish since September, I must look crazy at times! The priest before him just was not what I needed and I left the Church.

I love that idea, over the mailbox, too!
Our boys actually have two crucifixes in their bedrooms, as they are all two to a room, and they each have one over their beds. We gave each of them crucifixes as gifts when they were young, and they also have received those smaller ones, about 4inches? tall, for their baptisms, from assorted people. The ones we bought them are the larger ones, ?8 or 9 inches tall?. Oh, we also have a larger one, the San Damiano Cross, in our dining room. The one that is in the foyer is on the wall right next to the front door. There is a holy water font underneath it (that needs refilling!)

I have the holy water on my little area devoted to Mary. Seems safest there....
So far only 1 of my boys has a cross over his bed, but the other ones want one now too. Birthdays are coming... All my boys are summer/fall babies. My daughter was spring....
If only I were rich and could jut purchase them all at once!

Do you have any small crucifixes, like you would use for a rosary? My boys sleep with a rosary under their pillow. You can easily put a small, inexpensive crucifix under their pillow or in their pillow case.
If you need some I am POSITIVE that I have some laying around my studio. I would be happy to mail you some inexpensive Crucifix's and Miraculous Medals.

The St Benedict medal is under our letterbox. Held on by some blu tac.
It's been there 3 years. But it does the job
My husband always sleeps with a rosary under this pillow.
Lots of great ideas.
Hope you are feeling more peaceful.

A nice craft project to do with kids is making rosary holders to mount on the wall. We have ours in our bedrooms and keep our rosaries hanging there.

I've been really busy lately, so I haven't contributed to this conversation sooner, but I just wanted to make a note here. You have to be careful about your intentions of blessed objects.
Outwardly it can look like Catholics are using the crucifixes, rosaries, holy water and salt almost as talismans, trying to keep the devil away. We must be careful to not become superstitious in use of these objects.
These objects are sacramentals, which means they do not directly give grace like the Sacraments. I'm going to quote Father Hardon here:
Father Hardon Catholic Dictionary wrote:
Objects or actions that the Church uses after the manner of sacraments, in order to achieve through the merits of the faithful certain effects, mainly of a spiritual nature. They differ from sacraments in not having been instituted by Christ to produce their effect in virtue of the ritual performed. Their efficacy depends not on the rite itself, as in the sacraments, but on the influence of prayerful petition; that of the person who uses them and of the Church in approving their practice. The variety of sacramentals spans the whole range of times and places, words and actions, objects and gestures that, on the Church's authority, draw not only on the personal dispositions of the individuals but on the merits and prayers of the whole Mystical Body of Christ. |
|
|
The sacramentals help us invoke protection from God and earn grace -- there is no "power" in the blessed objects.
From the Roman Ritual translated by Philip T. Weller, 1964:
Quote:
Although we have stressed the truth that the sacramentals derive their efficacy chiefly from the intercessory power of the Church, we may not minimize the role played by man's own subjective dispositions. The sacraments, too, for that matter, demand something of the individual recipient--at the very least that the subject place no obstacle in the way of grace. But in the case of the sacramentals man's cooperation has a very large part to play if they are to attain their full purpose. Their function is to provide an atmosphere in which the virtue of religion can thrive, and to produce a psychological reaction in man, to raise his thoughts and aspirations out of the realm of the profane and up to the realm of the sacred, to fix his heart on the things of the spirit, to impress on his consciousness God's will for him and God's providence always hovering over him. |

I'm sure everyone knows this, but I just wanted to clarify since this is a public board.
As far as blessed salt, this is not part of the current Roman Ritual. The Extraordinary Form Baptismal rite includes a blessing of salt that is included in part of the baptism (placing on tongue, I believe) and salt was also mixed in Holy Water. And the prayers of blessing include exorcism words.
We have the blessing of being able to attend Mass both in the Ordinary and Extraordinary Forms. There is also permission to use the Rituals for the Sacraments and Blessings for either Forms. So you could find a priest who blesses salt for home use.
But in all my years as a Catholic I have not had blessed salt, nor do I find it necessary. If you need an exorcism, that priest would be able to discern if you need salt. I think Holy Water and the graces of the Sacraments, a blessed house, and living the Faith will be more than sufficient in ordinary circumstances. You do have a seemingly disturbing circumstance, so I do hope you can get a blessing for your house ASAP.
The reason why so many talk about the blessed salt is the blessing is part of the Holy Water blessing, and these are the words:
Quote:
P: Our help is in the name of the Lord.
All: Who made heaven and earth.
2. The exorcism of salt follows:
God's creature, salt, I cast out the demon from you by the living + God, by the true + God, by the holy + God, by God who ordered you to be thrown into the water-spring by Eliseus to heal it of its barrenness. May you be a purified salt, a means of health for those who believe, a medicine for body and soul for all who make use of you. May all evil fancies of the foul fiend, his malice and cunning, be driven afar from the place where you are sprinkled. And let every unclean spirit be repulsed by Him who is coming to judge both the living and the dead and the world by fire.
All: Amen.
Let us pray.
Almighty everlasting God, we humbly appeal to your mercy and goodness to graciously bless + this creature, salt, which you have given for mankind's use. May all who use it find in it a remedy for body and mind. And may everything that it touches or sprinkles be freed from uncleanness and any influence of the evil spirit; through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen. |
|
|
This is taken from the Roman Ritual as linked above.
One last note is from Father Hardon's Catholic Dictionary on the Rite of Exorcism (emphasis mine):
Quote:
Rite of Exorcism
A sacramental by which a duly appointed person, generally a priest, is authorized to use the special power he receives to drive out the eveil spirit. Until recently this power had been conferred in the minor order of exorcist. Nevertheless the power could not be used except by a priest who had received the special and express permission from ecclesiastical authority. The Church, in her directives to exorcists, warns them not to be too ready to assume that there is diabolical possession, since there are so many cases of hysteria or other kinds of emotional disorder that may seem to be "possession." Moreover, explicit directives are given on how to deal with ostensibly possessed persons, notably to exercise great care not to be either deceived or intimidated by the evil spirit.
Over the centuries the rite of exorcism has been long and detailed, with a variety of ritual forms, numerous signs of the cross, recitation of psalms, the Athanasian Creed, prayers to St. Michael, use of holy water, and periodic adjurations. Among other formulas, the priest declares, "I adjure you, ancient serpent, by the Judge of the living and the dead, by your Creator, and the Creator of the world, by Him who has power to send you to hell. Depart immediately with fear and with your army of terror. Depart from this servant of God [name], who takes refuge in the bosom of the Church."
Private exorcism, which is the private adjuring of the devil from harming someone, may be performed by any priest, and also by a lay person; for example, by the use of sacramentals such as holy water or by invoking the name of Jesus. |

I am praying for you, as I know this is such a tough time!

I agree with everyone else here -
get that blessing (Catholic Charities will NOT help with a blessing - so that was just odd)
hang a crucifix in every room - we started with every entryway in our home (doors AND windows), then expanded from there.
I read an interesting book several years ago that freed us from "oddities" - I wish I could remember the name of it. In it, the author described release from essentially "curses" - heavily Bible-focused. Turns out his family had a rash of weird occurrences and he finally pinpointed it to a beautiful painting of a dragon they had recently inherited from a deceased relative - get rid of the painting and the issues resolved on their own.
So we did a similar cleansing (I never did tarot cards and ouija boards - but there was enough other little oddities that sneak in to even a "good Catholic" home...) - the difference is amazing!

Catholic Mommy
Ths was exactl what I was alluding to when I posted.
I had similar things happening.
I looked at everything opinion our home and cleansed our home too. I used holy water afterward as well.
At a retreat a fe years back, we were asked to denounce any past use of tarot cards, anything that was stopping receiving Jesus in full. It's called ancestry healing. It's definitely part of our church and can be used to break the chains of the evil one - so to speak.
I am wondering how things are going Jill.

I am still hanging in there. I have a confession scheduled for tomorrow. I don't know whether to bring this up afterwards or not. I am looking into the Ancestral healing. My father died because of the use of drugs. He would write "poetry" about it. I have the poetry and almost wonder if I should not...??
I was 2. I do not have much of him.
I feel in real life rather alone with it all. Like I need to tackle this without aid. Because people think I am nuts or whatever.
So I am still here.

I don't think your father's poetry would necessarily be the cause of the things your family has experienced. (If that were the case, wouldn't you have noticed something before moving into your current home?)

No this is true. This is residual and here in the house. The former owners also saw the old man that wanders the house too. The wife even tried to find out who he was.
