Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My husband and I have looked and looked and cannot find confirmation or refutation. It certainly looks like the Holy Father's face from other pictures we found in that time period and that angle. My blog has gotten a gazillion hits from FB on that picture, so I hope someone corrects me if it is not him.

I think so, but it's hard to be sure.

Stephanie, I've been wondering, especially as we contemplate baby names , is the German for Francis, "Franz," or do you call him Francis still?

No, it's Franziskus!

Thank you, Eva! I assume Franz is a shortened form of Franziskus, then? It was confusing because Franz didn't seem quite right, and yet all the royals who were "Franz" are "Francis" in English.

Yes, it's the short form, but not used for the saints, they are always "Franziskus." It's different with kings, they were normally baptized "Franz."

Franziskus is always St. Francis of Assisi.

St. Franz von Sales
St. Franz Xavier

are the other 2 Francis that I know off hand. I just asked my dh to confirm this, because Eva thought something else.
With that I just have to say... Eva, you must come back soon and visit your Vaterland!

Bridget, if you get lots of hits on your blog from Germany, it is because I have sent links to it to a few friends I know. You are going to be famous in Germany!!!

Thanks, Stephanie. Well isn't that just confusing?

I just did a quick google, and this is how German wikipedia lists them. Franziskus for Francis and Franz for de (or rather, von) Sales and Xavier (Xaver in German).

Thanks for pointing those two out. They hadn't come to my mind, so I thought I would actually look them and others up. There are, in fact, quite a few saints named "Franziskus" and quite a few saints named "Franz." Take a look at this list. Maybe it depended on the time and age how those saints were translated into German or how they were named in general? Anyway, "Franziskus" makes people think of Francis of Assisi!

Stephanie, I would love to come back and visit. It's just too expensive for us with one income! I could meet you so easily since my sister and her family still live very close to you (as you might remember). My husband has been to Europe for research purposes, but we have not been able to come along. Sometimes I think I will only get a chance to go back when somebody from my family in Germany dies -- and then I will have to ask my German relatives to pay for the flight.

Eva, I wonder if all the other Saints Francis, Franz, Francesco....came after Francis of Assisi???

I understand completely about the overseas travel. We are able to make the trip only because of the generous help of my parents. Otherwise it would be impossible.

That would be interesting to find out, I don't know, you would have to go through all the different saints. The name itself seems to be older than St. Francis, at least according to Wikipedia.

So nice your parents are helping out with the costs. Last time we were back (six years ago) my parents also payed for everything. It was their 40th wedding anniversary, but we could only go for a week to celebrate.

Did you see fun fact about our Holy Father's favorite marian image/devotion - Mary Untier of Knots - Pope Francis' Favorite Marian Image

That is so neat - it's a lesser known image we have talked about at 4 Real extensively in the past.

He touches the paralyzed.

see the video. He descended his papal mobile to bless this man.

Get out your hankies. Or maybe it's just me touched this way?

Not just you. Love.

Every morning my daughter asks me first thing in the morning, "So how is our Papa today?" I am loving this little push to find out each and every day.

Romano Guardini is one of his favorite authors.

Which is similar to Pope Benedict.

The first one up there isn't Pope Francis. The people who originally posted that apologized for making the mistake.

Pope Francis wasn't ordained an auxiliary bishop until 1992 and that photo is way older than that. It's from 1985; Pope Francis wasn't made a Cardinal until 2001.

I apologize for posting the first photo that Jenn linked. Someone left the following comment on my blog:

"That is the then future Cardinal Jorge María Mejía. Mejía was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and was made a Chaplain of His Holiness on 20 September 1978. Incidentaly his name and nationality are the same as those of Pope Francis.

So please, don't confuse him with Jorge María Bergoglio! Surely Bergoglio did not look so much older then Pope John-Paul II, and Cardinal Ratzinger during the time this photo was taken!!

Please forward the correction to many who are believing the mistake!"
