Isn't it funny that the acronym AMA is both "Advanced Maternal Age" and "Against Medical Advice"  ? I think we can teach the medical establishment a thing or two about "preconceived notions" and antiquated definitions.

I have to laugh at medical professionals who consider a mother's age so seriously. During my last very high risk pregnancy at age 32, one of the ladies from the parish who helped take care of me was also pregnant. She is probably 10 years older than me and kept coming to help until the week her baby was born, and then she was back when baby was about 3 weeks old.

I'm 39. Not exactly ancient. I was told that anyone over 35 is considered AMA or, another lovely term, elderly maternal. I am considered high risk because of the twins, my age and a previous miscarriage.
I hope to surround myself in little ones for years. At our last Little Flowers meeting (See the Cottagethere was a woman who had just had the blessing of her first grandchild. She is the mother of 11 (plus one in heaven) and had a toddler on her knee (a cute little auntie if there ever was one). Wouldn't that be wonderful? She's 45.

I'm only 34 and considered a grand multigravia and in fact was considered so at last pregnancy when I was 32. I rather feel insulted by the term.

Your story of the 45 year old grandmother reminds me of my mum. She became a grandmother at 43, in fact my little sister is only 18 months older than my daughter and mum and I breastfeed together.

I am 39 and a grandmother twice over already (ages 2.5yrs, and 7mos), though my daughter (their mother) is not my birth daughter. In fact, The little dears are with me right now and they are a joy. And their 4yo auntie just loves them to pieces, too.

I'm old enough to be a grandmother, but as my eldest is only eleven I'll have to wait a few years yet. I'm wondering though how long it will take before I'm mistaken for my baby's grandmother  .
I have actually been pleasantly surprised by how positive everyone involved in my ante-natal care has been about mid-life pregnancy. I rather expected mutterings about high risk, but got comments like "lots of people have babies in their forties nowadays", and "you're fit and healthy, no reason why you should have any problems". The only downsides of pregnancy in the mid-40s that anyone has mentioned are the obvious higher risk of genetic defects and a higher risk of high blood pressure.
