Thanks, Leanne. There are recent studies linking Vit. D deficiency with a host of fetal development issues. It is a newer field, and I think they are still doing more studies to better understand the intricacies of it all and optimal treatment, but the different studies all are pointing in the same direction: lots of pregnant women are deficient, and women who are deficient, especially in the first trimester, have a higher risk of complications and greater risk of health problems for the baby.

Another vote for cod liver oil!
If you can't afford Green Pastures then Carlson's is the next best.
I buy from Amazon and we get the lemon flavored capsules... so everyone in my family will eat them and I get no complaints (indeed in what other house will you hear children clamoring: "Can I have my cod liver oil now!!!)

We do have Green Pastures. We used their gummies forever, and they were so easy for me, but I don't enjoy taking the liquid, especially now that I'm nauseous. My boys actually love taking the liquid (we have the cinnamon), it is me that is the problem

Thank you Lindsay for replying.
It will be very interesting to see the outcomes of the different studies.
God Bless

Can this be true?

Very discouraging after a couple of midday hours in the sun thanks to the warm weather.

Though I live in a warm, sunny climate, I was also D deficient.
The best D supplement, imo, is Bio-D-Mulsion. The current price at Amazon is very good.
You can get it at Vitacost, too.
My level was 32, I think? My nutritionist likes to see optimal ranges in 50-69.
I was taking 10,000 units for about 5 months. I was then in the optimal range (high, though, 69), and I am down to 6,000 units per day. 6,000 keeps me at a stable level, as my blood is monitored regularly.
So...depending on the person, some may need more Vit. D than one might think.

Not according to German sources, and who knows, maybe it's good for the body to get a lot of sun/vitamin D at one time during the year (summer) and take a break at other times during the year (winter).

Like a lot of things my guess is that while we may not be able to get the UVB rays which is the primary thing we need for vit D that we are likely getting more than just that one thing from sunlight.. and while they've isolated that one thing that there's likely stuff they haven't figured out about it yet that is a benefit winter or summer (it just feels good to be out in the sun in winter.. so there's something good about it).
For instance, when I use bromelain capsules.. I find I get a better response to them when I eat real pinapple too. That while we know bromelain is the enzyme that helps reduce swelling and speed healing. It just doesn't work quite as well without the whole food.
I would think the same with vitamin D.. that while we get the D3 from the sun.. that maybe we need more than JUST that in pills to get the full benefit. So I wouldn't trust the sunlight to raise your levels.. but I would still try and get some because it's likely that there's more there than "meets the eye".

Well, I don't think being out in the sun during the wintertime is ever a *bad* thing, Lindsay! It always helped my mood when I lived in NY. Otherwise, it was just like living in a cave for 5 months... or more...
So while maybe it's not enough sunshine to bring your levels up to optimal, I imagine it is still enough to do you some good!
