Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I flagged this thread for myself but it has taken forever to get back to it! We are huge lego fans here. Our "lego room" has moved around our house over the years and we've tried a variety of organization methods. What worked well when we had few legos didn't work as well when we had many. Now we have so many that it's a marvel the kids still ask for them for Christmas and birthdays.

We used to use plastic shoe boxes to sort legos by color. People and their stuff were kept in a separate shoe box. The kids liked being able to see through the boxes and clean up was easy for even the little ones. Then we moved to using large dresser drawers for storage. Each drawer contained three colors. The plastic shoe boxes were used for people, unusual colors, and specialty pieces (rare legos, painted legos, cloaks, plants). The black and gray pieces were stored in a 74qt flat "underbed" plastic bin. This was still easy to cleanup, though honestly cleanup rarely happened...

A couple of years ago my oldest decided to reorganize the legos by type. Flat plates, bricks, flat smooth plates, arches and building structures, wheels & propellars, etc. each have their own drawer or tub. Since most of what they build is of their own design, he thought that this would help, and it does, but cleanup of all but the basic pieces is very hard for the younger set. Cleanup still rarely happens so it's not that big a deal. Built models are stored in drawers, on shelves in the closet, and on the floor along the edges of the room. Sets that aren't used as often are stored with their instructions in plastic bins in the closet. The instructions are placed against the wall of the clear bin for easy identification. All of our other instructions are kept in page protectors that are "filed" standing up in a 20qt tub. Several instructions are stuffed into each page protector, but they are grouped (Star Wars together, etc). The kids have to pull them all out if they are trying to find something but at least they are organized in the meantime!

We tried spreading a sheet on the floor for quick pickup, but each child always had his own pile that couldn't be combined with everyone else's pile. Also, like y'all said, pieces aren't sorted. For a long time we put all 4 boys in one room and used the other bedroom as a "lego room." The mess didn't bother me then because it was a playroom. Now all of the legos are in the younger set's bedroom. We make sure that there is a clear path between bunkbed and door and I ignore the mess. Everyone is happy. Occasionally I make them clean up so that I can vacuum.

I am a big lego fan and agree that if the kids can come up with the organizational plan, that is ideal.

Bumping this up. I just reorganized our Legos (again). I'm considering making a smaller round bag for each color, so that it can be zipped up after using, but kept on the space of the bag to keep the colors separated. Right now we have fabric drawers in our shelves, but they get legos caught at the bottom, so I have them in ziploc bags. For colors like gray, white, black, red, it seems like they need some bigger fabric bag.

Just thinking out loud.
