Let me start off by saying...I am not crafty. My daughters are interested in making ornaments. I have found a few nice patterns for owls, birds, trees, etc. But I'm looking for religious patterns. I've tried making patterns free hand and it just doesn't work. I've been searching on the web and find lovely pictures, but no actual patterns. Any suggestions?

The trick for felt fabric is either stuffing or reinforcing, or it has to be stiff. Years ago my mother tried to do felt ornaments for Jesse Tree and just single ply are super floppy.
All the gorgeous examples Mary has shows how reinforced they are.

Mary, these are wonderful, too! I am amazed at all of the patterns you are finding. Thank you!!!
Jenn, I agree about what you said when using felt. I have only made stuffed ornaments. BTW...you were the inspiration for me to venture out of my comfort zone to work with felt several years ago.

Jennifer,
Do you remember the ones that my boys made a few years ago? I made a template for a circle (I turned over a drinking cup) and cut out two circles. I Then cut out a green triangle and brown square and a yellow star. Then we used a running stitch and sewed on the pieces of the tree with matching color thread.
I then used a blanket stitch and sewed the two circles until almost closed, then stuffed them and added on a loop for hanging and finshed off the blanket stitch.
Okay, a tree isn't really religious, but it was very cute and easy.
My work of advice.....NEVER FREE HAND ANYTHING! I even made a template for where to put my stitches for the blanket stitch.
If you are doing embroidery on the felt just lightly trace it on and stitch over it.
Resources:
Check out Youtube for how to do any hand stitching. Here is a great tutorial on the blanket stitch
The book Doodle Stitching is great for help with hand embroidery.
Here are a few examples of something like what we did: here and here

Yes, I remember them Betsy. Cora is ready to give this project a try. She's cutting as I type this!
Thank you for the blanket stitch tutorial. I couldn't remember what that stitch was called.

Looks good - just requested it. Thanks.
Jenn, I have pretty good luck with Google image searches. I can usually tell from the picture if it looks like a DIY project (which means it likely will have the pattern and directions). I had fun searching. Glad there were some that worked for you.

Did you mean to link the embroidery stitches or the Beginners Book?

Betsy, did you use wool felt or ordinary felt? Was it stiffened?

I used a wool/rayon blend. It's nice to touch and sort of thin. The way I made them I didn't use any stiffeners. I think the blanket stitch on the sides is a pretty sturdy stitch that helps and of coarse the stuffing gives is firmness.
This is a good source, especially to find the color that you need and the matching DMC thread!!!!!
I know in the past, I mean years ago, I have gotten some felt at Joann's like this. But, i don't know if they still carry it and if they do I am sure the colors are limited.
I have purchased some 100% wool felt before and it is very nice, but IMO it is very cost prohibitive to do much with. The blend is a wonderful trade off for good quality yet great color selection and price.

I actually own the one the that I linked to. I can't remember why I picked this one over the other, but I did. It has a nice, visually easy to look at beginning section that goes through the stitches. It then has a few projects and a ton of little sketches to be embroidered. Mine also came with a CD to transfer the images. One of my dc loves to embroider. So, we have gotten nice quality Flour Sack Cloths and embroidered on the corners. These make really nice gifts!!!
I am positive that if you scoured the internet you can find equal or maybe better information. But, for a beginner (like me) it was a great book to launch this hobby with my dc. It gave me the vocabulary to know what ot look for on youtube---my favorite way to learn new crafts.

I LOVE the Advent Wreath! Thank you!
For my younger children, we've been using felt glue and they've been holding up really well.

Oh and you wouldn't have to put the face on the wreath - sort of looks like a smiling pickle to me...

When I saw the smiley face, I thought, "That's weird." Now I just see a pickle. It really is a sweet ornament...I just personally won't sew on the face. I was thinking berries.
