Congrats Jen!
Doesn't having a full pantry just make you feel rich? It always has me. More than the typical amounts of money we'd have around.. that full pantry is such a comfortable feeling.

I need to learn to knit socks. I'm still only making basic stuff! I'm quite impressed.
And your own butter? Impressed!

My goodness, CONGRATULATIONS, so excited for you
We are done with our first term and October celebrations are behind us ... so I'm taking it very easy this week. Sort of, I'm finishing up putting our 5 week Advent/Winter session together. I'm excited about some of our selections.
And thanks to the Advent candles thread I just ordered my set online instead of running around town trying to find them.
Off to brew some Sleepy Hollow Pumpkin chai and continue my first knitted sweater project

we crossed posted and have to giggle at the idea of socks. I've unraveled my knitted sweater about four times since my first cast on last week

Okay, I am going to jump on this one. My 10 yo and I learned to knit socks following this pattern from Knit Freedom.
I have made two pairs like this and I am getting ready to cast on for a pair not from this pattern.
Best, $15 I have ever spent on a pattern/class. It was so worth it!!! Truly, if my 10yo can follow it and do it, you can too!

Congratulations, Jen!!
In busy mode around here, and making some shifts and tweaks in our school day/materials, chiefly in moving our "Morning" Basket to after lunch, and having quiet independent work first thing in the day, when people are fresher. Already it's making a HUGE difference in how long my 10-year-old takes to do math.
Today was the kind of homeschooling day I remember marveling at when my oldest kids were younger and we were new homeschoolers. I had gotten this new typing app for my Macbook -- it's really for preschoolers and is called "Big Typer," and what it does is read back aloud whatever your child has typed. So the kids played with it, typing gibberish and falling on the floor laughing when the computer voice would try to read it, until I finally told them that that was enough goofiness and that they could continue to play with it as long as they typed actual words.
The 10-year-old got bored and went to do his schoolwork, but the 8-year-old kept playing with it, writing first one sentence, then another, the computer reading each one back to her, until she had a little story. Then, because she couldn't save the story on the typing app, she went and got her copybook and copied it down. THEN she decided that she wanted to write another story, which she summarily did, but she rummaged out a special notebook to dedicate to stories, and she copied both stories into that notebook.
She did also do the formal schoolwork that I had planned, but writing occupied her morning. It was wonderful.
Went out last night with my husband for my birthday -- lucky me, I get elections for my birthday lots of years -- and had a yummy dinner in a beautiful restaurant in an old house, where we were the only customers. We were there for about 3 hours, too . . . not another soul in the place but us, the chef, and the one waitress. That felt kind of special -- talk about having "your" restaurant!
I'm reading The Lord of the Rings aloud to my 8- and 10-year-olds right now, at the 10-year-old's request. It had been about two years since the last time we read it together (we start 'em young in this house). And I'm working on a long poem I had begun ten years ago when we lived in England, about the Saxon lady, Richeldis de Faverches, who received visions of Our Lady which culminated in the shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham. Trying to write pieces of it that sound translated from Anglo-Saxon, which is kind of an interesting project.
Off to bed now, though. I stayed up waaaaaay too late last night. Trying to reclaim my good habits.
Sally

Congratulations, Jen!
Happy Birthday, Sally!
I stayed up way too late as well, so I should be off to bed soon. I am planning our third annual Advent mini-retreat for homeschooling mothers and Laura Berquist is going to be our speaker. I am feeling rather anxious about it at the moment, but just secured a church and should get to planning. I've opened it to the whole county and I think women will even come from a bit beyond that. In the past two years about 25 moms attended and I expect more.
I was thinking today that it would be fun to have one fall project planned each day until Thanksgiving. I'm terrible at this but I think it's what we need. Art projects, baking, etc.
We are heading to Thomas Aquinas College next week. My oldest is applying there and they have a very nice set-up for visiting. A mobile home type trailer to stay in, meals, class visits and such. I think it will be a nice little get-away for our family and I hope to stop by The Getty and my sister's on the way home.

Jen -- glad you are feeling good enough to organize your closet!!!!
Sally - Happy birthday!
As for Montana, I think we need to build an off-grid Catholic community, so everyone is welcome. Bring snowshoes.

Jen--congratulations! What wonderful joyous news.
Sally--Happy Birthday!
Mary--I love that quote from LOTR. It made the rounds on Facebook yesterday and, even though I don't live in the States, I found it to be very encouraging.
I have a different elephant in the room. It is a family elephant. My in-laws informed us that they and the rest of the family will be having Christmas at my husband's aunt's house....without us. This has been very hurtful to us mostly because this is the last straw. We need to think of how to deal with this in a godly manner yet make it clear that boundaries need to be set here. So we have spent our week in quiet mode, doing things that nourish our soul like reading, baking, playing games and resting in the knowledge that God is in control of this whole thing, we just need to breathe.
It snowed today so we spent the entire morning knee-deep in read alouds. We read The Enchanted Castle, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and Number the Stars. It was a good day.
Oh! and I am also rejoicing in the fact that I now have running water in the kitchen, a working stove and beautiful new counter tops. I was supposed to have a newly painted kitchen wall today but the gentleman did not show up. Maybe tomorrow.

Just wanted to encourage you, Julia. We find Christmas at home so peaceful. It gives you the chance to make your own traditions and memories. Eat what and when you want. Open presents on your time etc. Maybe put a little more effort into Advent to build the excitement and anticipation for Christmas
