BTW, I was at Costco yesterday and saw this same complete set at $27.99.
$8.00 difference for those who are trying to watch their pennies. |

I had a friend pick this up for me last week thanks to your tip!
Now I'm off to buy the Schoolhouse Rocks from Amazon. We have it...but only on VHS!

The Homeschool Buyers co-op has a special running on the Magic Schoolbus science kits where you pay for a years subscription and get one a month. It might make a nice compliment to the DVDs.

I am so happy you posted this! Dh agreed, perfect joint gift for Christmas. Thank you!
I am a reluctant user of MSB. I was turned off by the cartoon-y aspects. But the books were appearing in the library bag, we checked out one video and the avalanche began. Like Nancy said, it's solid science. Both my boys are eating it up.
They have checked out every MSB book our libary has, and have applied all this science to everyday life. I'm constantly hearing science being batted around and when I ask where they learned it, most of the time it's "Magic School Bus".
My husband took notice and we actually bought the science kits for the year from Homeschool Buyers Co-Op. http://www.homeschoolbuyersco-op.org/ I'm weak in science and they LOVE it, it's fun and convenient to have these little science experiments. |

I was all ready to subscribe for this service from the Homeschool Buyer's Co-op today. It is $120 for the year, so $10 per kit, with on kit per month (though, you can sign up for custom kits with 1 OR 2 per month (for 6 months, if 2) for slightly more, $156)
BUT
I just discovered that the prices on the same kits bought 3 at a time are still less at their regular price at Rainbow Resources.
And I'm bummed, because I was so excited to just pay up front and have it delivered. Getting a package in the mail is just SO exciting. I suppose I could spend the $120 up front at RR and have 18 kits (versus 12) sitting in the closet to pull out on a regular basis, perhaps even according to the MSB videos we were watching?

Ack! I'm super confused. I guess the Magic Schoolbus kits are different from the Young Scientists kits, though, some of the stuff overlaps?
FAQs
Has anyone used both? Is the slick packaging of the Magic Schoolbus kit worth the extra price?

Just titles and contents - I am under the impression there are two types of MSB kits (and these are both different from Young Scientists). One set of MSB is basic but LOTS of fun (we've done them all) and another set comes with command/task cards and seems to be more in-depth - but I've not used those ones yet.

Lindsay, These aren't super slick. They are very basic, simple kits for younger children. My boys are very into experiments, so even the simplest is appealing. And it is super exciting to get the kit in the mail. The 12 month subscription from Homeschool Buyer's is Magic School Bus.
I have seen the kits of the Young Scientist, and they seem to be a little more beefy and after number 3 cater to older children. See http://www.theyoungscientistsclub.com/retailstore/retail-you ngscientist.html

Thanks, Jenn. We bought the DVDs for Christmas, and I went ahead and ordered the subscription. I do think the boys will really like having it come in the mail, and I'm a bit clearer on the differences between the two.

So, the baby just broke a disc. The boys were so excited that Tuesday evenings, when Dad comes home late, is Magic Schoolbus night, they pulled the newest disc down and put it next to the computer. The baby got it and broke it.
Any ideas for replacing it ?
I know that several years ago when a baby put a cd from an expensive set at the library into the toaster, we ordered the set, made a copy of the burnt disc, and put the new disc into the library set, keeping the copied disc in the set for ourselves.
And we now listen to Bach's Missa Solemnis every Lent
Any ideas for a similar solution? The individually sold discs are arranged by topic while the discs from the full set are chronological.

Look on the box for a publisher name and call the company and just ask for the replacement disk. I've had very good luck doing this over the years!
