Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Oh Ellie I totally forgot about doing that. If you like the look of eyelet you can buy the ruffles in various widths and then buy enough length for the skirt.. and that makes a nice edge that gives you more length.. I especially like it on denim I think you can buy other ready made ruffles.. sew them to the inside of the current skirt at the hemline and they look made that way. The most recent skirt my mom did for my oldest.. she found a very short brown corduroy skirt in some handmedowns and I found a cream lace that we added to the bottom.. came out super cute and went from way to short to top of the knee (acceptable here).

Ooh, great idea about the eyelet! I think I need to go get a roll of it to just keep on hand!

oh and the skirts at Hannah Lise are mostly pretty long except THESE There's two tie dye skirts (not wild color tie dye) that apparently have draw strings and will shorten and "flounce" the skirt.. I showed it to my older girls and they both thought it was very cute.

Lucked out at Aeropostale: 4 crew neck style t shirts for everyday. Sweatshirt/hoodie, 2 sweaters for everyday and also to go with black pants for Church (when its too cold for her skirt - (because WHY is it the style to not wear hose, tights or leggins - at least here in Texas). If the wash well - were getting more. We have plaid button shirts from American Eagle coming in the mail - based on what she tried on at the store - they SHOULD fit.

Thanks, Melinda, but they are a bit expensive, as you already pointed out!

I've found some nice things for the teens girls (junior and small women's clothing sizes) at Kohl's. It's still a sifting process but we found a lovely dressy shirt there last year that she loves and fits our parameters. Not that she is bucking the rules but she does want things that are to her taste within those rules

Have you consider leggings with the above the knee skirts? it's warm and in fashion and turned out to be ok for us here, I know it's not for everyone though. Just wanted to toss it out there.. we actually started it because a dress from grandma ended up being definately shorter than we were ok with, and so we tried it with capri leggings and we decided that it was acceptable that way.

We don't really have a Kohl's close by, I think the next is about 90 minutes away and I have never really shopped there so far. We do have leggings, but for church or some more formal events, I don't like this style so much. With leggings I think it's very hard to find the right socks and shoes, especially in the winter with lots of snow!

Collection of links

Eva, you could check out some of the links on the above website. Maybe there is something interesting. One thing we have done a lot is wearing turtlenecks under not so wintery dresses and woolen undies underneath.
The Hummelsheim company went out of business years ago, but there are still nice skirts and dresses to be found on ebay occasionally (here in DE).

Thanks, Stephanie, I have looked at some of those sites, but my daughter is not crazy about most of the options. Quite a few are too plain for her. She likes longer skirts, but she doesn't want them to look old-fashioned! I don't know what the clothing is like in Germany these days, but my sister sends me a few things her daughters have outgrown once in a while and they all are not too short. I haven't gotten anything for teenagers from her, though. Have you ever tried Maas or Hess Natur? They used to have good skirts, but I don't know if they still do.

Have you looked on Etsy? I think that you would find some options in your price range if you browse around a bit there. Even if you don't find exactly what you need in stock, you might find something close enough that could be modified since so many items can be custom made. Plus, there are likely some options on the trendy side that might appeal to your daughter if she's wanting to grow up a little.

Yes, I have (and Ebay), but I find it cumbersome looking there. Maybe I should give it another try.

Love the posts. Thing is - my dd 15 IS modest (thank you Lord!) - but (how can I say this?) wouldn't wear some of the types of skirts at the modest type clothing sites. I can hear her now calling some of the skirts "grandma" skirts or something . So, we do get some skirts above the knee - just not too, too above! Shirts - oh that takes LOTS of hunting for just a few. Once we find one that seems modest, yet fashionable - we grab others like it in different colors! Seems someone needs to have a store with modest yet fashionable clothes (cause she might also say she doesn't want to look Amish . I don't want to offend. Anyway, our current plan is whenever we get a chance - go out at stores and hunt! Cause it takes a long time. DD is particular about how clothes fit - so mail order doens't work.

My daughter has a similar reaction to those modest clothing sites. She likes long skirts, but doesn't want to look old-fashioned.

I used to sew much more, but I never seem to find the time anymore these days. Maybe I will teach my daughter and she can make her own skirts.

Thanks for all the great links and replies (Pilgrim, your list is quite extensive, I will take a look). We have done consignment stores, but even the better ones are quite far away. There is just one store in the next village and their clothing is only so-so. I guess I will keep my eyes open wherever we go and also check the major online chains regularly.

I got this skirt in black this spring in a size small, tall for my daughter who is a little over 5'5". She really likes it and it goes below her knee when it is folded down and when it is up. It was too short on her sister who is almost 6'.

Yes, the list is extensive! I did a LOT of looking around on modest clothing sites during this last pregnancy, as I wanted the same things your daughters want. Not TOO old fashioned looking, not frumpy, but yet, modest! I like a classy, flattering, but not revealing, and yet not too modern look. I used to be able to get skirts from motherhood maternity, but their latest looks are just weird and abstract in IMHO.

I really did like the skirts from New Creation, they have fit the bill for all of the above. At least the styles I bought did.

Thought I'd add an idea for those who are struggling to find clothing for any family member. I always try to pray, asking St. Anthony to intercede for me to find good clothing for the family when I head out to shop. I think he has definitely helped. While we may not be up to some peoples fashion standards, we have been able to keep our family pretty nicely dressed with everything except maternity skirts for me and jeans for dh being purchased used. Which makes me want to.

YAY!!!!

Off to order a couple to get me through the rest of my pregnancy!

I'm so glad! I have been really happy with their skirts, and was overjoyed to find nice maternity skirts that were flattering, and didn't looking trashy, hugging the wrong places, yet fit nicely, not like a tent. I had to get new skirts this time, as with girls I gain more weight. I decided I was going to just get the new skirts, and try to look nice instead of being dreary about being a little bigger. I know for me it lifts my spirits to have clothes that feel/look nice. The cut of the New Creation maternity skirts is such that you can wear them after pregnancy until you can fit back into others. I really liked that. One of my friends didn't even realize it was a maternity skirt, as it fit/laid so nicely.
