I'm having a hard time finding dresses and skirts below (not at or above) the knee for my soon to be 13 year old. This is for the fall/winter, so I'm looking for heavier fabrics and long sleeves (for dresses). She wears size 12. I also try to avoid synthetic materials. Any ideas? (I have tried Lands' End, Gymboree, Children's Place, Old Navy, Gap, Hanna Andersson, L.L. Bean, Mini Boden). I'm also trying to keep the cost reasonable, say not more than $25.00. We don't live close to any mall or stores, so mail order would be best. Does anything like this exist?

Good question! Clothes for my now 15 yr dd - very hard to find! Hoping someone has advice! I finally said - for church lets find a pair black jeans that you can dress up with a sweater> UGH - can't anyone make jeans for girls not skinny jeans! Found one levis type that SAYS it skinny but really isn't on dd. BUt they don't come in black. Found one that is skinny - but she's got to wear something. Her skirt she wears is long in back and above knee in front. But we found nothing else.
Shirts for every day with jeans - also impossible. All low cut (yes, she can wear a camisole but they are low cut too!).
Looking to see if anyone else knows!

If she likes the style and is still in the smaller sizes at landsend.. their long sleeve knit dresses can be worn a size or two big which brings the skirts lower quite nicely. I've done that and with the nice neckline.. roll a cuff on the sleeve and they look great.

barb, check out the tanks that hanes has.. I think those are the higher cut ones.. also someone has posted here about tanks made for layering that are higher cut.. I'll see if I can find the link.
I've found some nice things for the teens girls (junior and small women's clothing sizes) at Kohl's. It's still a sifting process but we found a lovely dressy shirt there last year that she loves and fits our parameters. Not that she is bucking the rules but she does want things that are to her taste within those rules
Have you consider leggings with the above the knee skirts? it's warm and in fashion and turned out to be ok for us here, I know it's not for everyone though. Just wanted to toss it out there.. we actually started it because a dress from grandma ended up being definately shorter than we were ok with, and so we tried it with capri leggings and we decided that it was acceptable that way.
I save clothes from year to year so I can't always recall where we got things. So I'll look around and see where I might have found things.

We do have quite a few of those dresses, but recently the quality has become very bad and they are way too thin! Also, I think these dresses look better on little girls, say up to age 11, before puberty starts. After that they somhow look "wrong."

Eva, yeah, my 12.5 yr old isn't wearing those anymore, but my 11 year old still does (the print rather than solid colors works better for camoflaging development)

The Modest Mom has some skirts that are long and might work, though they are more than $25...

Barb have you tried the school uniform pants (target/walmart) for a straight leg black pant?
I've found it's generally worth it to carefully check at all the "main" shops... kohls, jcpenny, sears, walmart and target.. they so often have a one-off item that will fit what we'd like. I remember one year getting girls skirts at walmart in a lovely velvety material (probably not natural fibers) that were "tea-length". Can't find them every year of course. Oh and keep looking those stores will often bring out dressier things for Christmas and you can sometimes find things at that time that you can't any other time.

I like the dress on the home page- very cute for a young lady.
The skirts are under $25, but they may be longer than you are looking for.

Have you looked on Etsy? I think that you would find some options in your price range if you browse around a bit there. Even if you don't find exactly what you need in stock, you might find something close enough that could be modified since so many items can be custom made. Plus, there are likely some options on the trendy side that might appeal to your daughter if she's wanting to grow up a little.

Though hemming a skirt may be one of the easiest alternation possible and some of the imperfect ones are worth the cost to get and shorten and hem.

Also, Eddie Bauer plain tanks have a higher neckline. My daughter likes those. She has also looked at (and heard good things about) these Halftees. They are made for layering without the bulk and are reversible, one side having a higher neckline than the other.

dresses
Collection of links
Eva, you could check out some of the links on the above website. Maybe there is something interesting. One thing we have done a lot is wearing turtlenecks under not so wintery dresses and woolen undies underneath.
The Hummelsheim company went out of business years ago, but there are still nice skirts and dresses to be found on ebay occasionally (here in DE).

Modest Apparel USA
Has some nice girls skirts, and not too bad prices compared to other modest clothing stores online.
Ringger Clothing
and Their Ebay Store
Have a lot of nice skirts at a good price. I linked to both because from their eBay store you can get a nice price and easily find a nice selection, but if you're looking for custom materials, lengths etc. it's nice to go to their actual store website. You can add ruffles, or add/subtract length from a skirt in their custom ordering dept.
Fashion Belle- List of Modest Clothing Resources
and
Living Modest Clothing Directory
Don't know if looking though the sites on those two lists will be of any help, but I thought I'd stick them in here.
New Creation Apparel
I love this place! I was so happy with the maternity skirts I ordered here. The lady who owns it was so helpful, and the fit was so flattering(very hard to find with maternity clothes!!!!) yet modest, very modest. I love that they have an awesome zoom feature on their site so you can really study the skirt and know if it's your style. The skirts are ladies skirts, but we've found with dd almost 12 that she can wear a lot of smaller ladies size skirts. The only complaint i have with this company is that they are getting low stock on some of their items.
One other option I've found very cheap skirts for dd is at thrift shops, Goodwill etc. in the ladies dept. She has a number of nice long length, but not frumpy, ladies denim skirt from those places. I've never actually had to buy new for her yet! I also have found that she's starting to be able to wear small and medium ladies t-shirts, which helps in the "having enough sleeve" dept., since many of the better/expensive brands have more sleeve, and we have thankfully been able to find a number of nice tops for her.

Love the posts. Thing is - my dd 15 IS modest (thank you Lord!) - but (how can I say this?) wouldn't wear some of the types of skirts at the modest type clothing sites. I can hear her now calling some of the skirts "grandma" skirts or something . So, we do get some skirts above the knee - just not too, too above! Shirts - oh that takes LOTS of hunting for just a few. Once we find one that seems modest, yet fashionable - we grab others like it in different colors! Seems someone needs to have a store with modest yet fashionable clothes (cause she might also say she doesn't want to look Amish . I don't want to offend. Anyway, our current plan is whenever we get a chance - go out at stores and hunt! Cause it takes a long time. DD is particular about how clothes fit - so mail order doens't work.

IF someone doesn't mind a bit above the knee - dd wears this skirt to Church: http://www.ae.com/web/browse/product.jsp?productId=1313_1205 _073&catId=cat1320034&bundleCatId=cat5550001
Hope the like works. Its an american eagle skirt called "hi-low skirt". She has it in black and wears a different shirt with it then what they show. It is above the knee - but not mini skirt like some.
Off to the mall this afternoon to look for everyday shirts! Wish us luck. We are hoping the crew neck t shirts we see online at Aeropostale work (I know - I dislike that store too - but sometime their short and long sleeve shirts are actually crew necks so show no cleavage. An aside here - be thankful if your daughter has no cleavage - so much harder to dress a curvy girl modestly .

Are you a sewer at all? I have found two BLESSED tutorials online about modifying clothing. One is to convert a large, mens T-shirt into a skirt... so so easy and CHEAP if you buy good used t-shirts at a thrift store. The one I made is so comfortable! I love it! See how to do it. Another thing you can do (I do this all the time) is to cut immodest dresses at the waist and simply add elastic to make a skirt! Maxi dresses make great maxi skirts...
And then there's this: Lengthening clothing. This has changed my world. No more anxiety about my daughter growing up in a culture where modest clothing can't be bought. This is also very simple and not as daunting as making a skirt/dress from scratch. I regularly lengthen my toddlers skirts/dresses... I keep a stash of bright knits or cottons to use just for this. I put about 5 inches of striped knit at the bottom of her pink Carter's dress and it works great ( I plan on adding a block of solid teal at the bottom of a too-short black and white polka dot dress I have for me):
