Excuse my pleas but they voted this morning and dh just called to say it doesn't look good.
Would appreciate prayers. Even with dh having a sideline business it has my heart beating erratically. And we'll be cut off the medical insurance as of June 1st until this is resolved. Of course, that's probably when something major medical will happen.
We won't know till morning whether they strike or not. If they do, the company won't negotiate with the union until after 90 days.
I hate unions...

Oh Cay, this is hard. I have the same feeling towards unions, but it doesn't affect our home life like this will for you.
Prayers coming!

PS When you're feeling that heart jumpiness, "Jesus I trust in Thee" helps a lot. I know the feeling....things are out of your control and a big looms ahead!

Cay, I'm adding my prayers. The not-having-health-insurance part and finding somewhere else to tighten up is so, so hard. Don't you wish Catholic social justice principles were the norm, instead of unbridled greed?
Sending hugs and prayers,

Dear Cay,
You have our prayers.
Coming from someone who hasn't had medical insurance for 4 years, it will be okay - even if something happens...
For me, that's been a broken ankle (2003) and a fractured nose (2006). Emergency Medi-Cal paid for the ankle and we're in negotiations with Medi-Cal and the hospital for my nose.
I mention that only to encourage you in the event something happens. All will be well....
Prayers from here...and Jenn's right...."Jesus, I Trust in You!" It's very calming.

Oh, goodness, YES!!!
The world is so greedy.
Even with the workers. These men are paid well plus overtime is available if you need extra spending money. And full benefits! We have a savings plan and retirement plan.
Yet they are still discontented with certain things like insurance increase.
We've paid $53 a month for full coverage insurance for nine years now. They want to increase to $150 per month by next year. I can understand that. I have a friend whose husband has to pay $150 every WEEK for their health insurance.
But it's the principle, my dh says. If this contract goes through, the union will be of no use to anyone. Everyone hates big business, especially since the Enron happenings. Seems that big business is winning though and I'm not sure how it can be stopped.
Greed! that's what it comes down to...on both sides!
And now that everyone knows my financial status... I humbly appreciate your prayers.

Cay,
Peace for you and your dh -- Unions can be such a good thing or such a bad thing for those concerned. It's funny about the insurance comment -- we just heard from the school dh will be attending that we have to provide our OWN insurance (which we didn't have to do last time). So we're scramblign on that too.....
But, I also just finished reading Claire Jordan Mohan's book on St. Faustina -- and throughout, St. Faustina is repeatedly called on to pray, "Jesus, I trust in you."

And you all have repeatedly told me to repeat this...so I will. For years my mantra has been "Be still...and know that I am God." I needed to learn to slow down...and I did.
I still love this verse. But I think I need something that sounds more like a child clinging to her parent. "Jesus, I trust in you." fits the bill perfectly.
Something ironic is happening here though. I told my father that the last couple months I've stressed about my oldest being without health insurance if he didn't sign up for college. Now he's starting a job that immediately puts him on health insurance. In a twist of the dial, we'll be the ones without health insurance (if they strike)!!! How weird is that!?
Proves that no one knows what tomorrow holds.
All this is also happening the same month I have a book being published, receiving a book contract, AND have been offered a job at our church to do the secretarial work for the CCD department. I will be allowed to do some of the work at home and the two younger girls can go with me to the office when I have to be there. They can do their work in the library which is across the hall from the office. They'll be in hog heaven. Of course, we are getting a new pastor in July so, as with everything else, nothing is written in stone and could change tomorrow.
What is God telling me here!?For sure it looks like one busy summer.
One thing I do know...this too shall pass. My dh isn't being fired or laid-off, it's just a rut in the road of life. But strikes can be so ugly and drawn-out.
Last month my life was peaceful and serene. This month it's a topsy-turvy roller-coaster. Is my life crazy or what!??!
Thanks for letting me airy out the laundry...

Over 900 workers voted and (of those 900) there was a landslide vote of 800+ to reject the contract AND to strike.
The company could have locked everyone out at midnight but they decided on a "cooling down" period...a ten day extension.
One would think with that many workers discontent, they would come up with a better offer but the workers think the company is only preparing themselves for the strike. The company will get what the company wants.
We'll go through all this again on May 26th.

Oh, they have brought a federal mediator into all this negotiating. Union and company are not allowed to talk until Monday morning.
The drama continues. Stay tuned...

My dh offered to buy me a laptop but, with the strike pending, I'd rather wait.
I've contacted Pelican Publishing and (since they are located in New Orleans and understand hurricane evacuations) they are giving me an extension on my contract for the RWL book. They are willing to work with me on this.
Forever optimistic , I've lived in this part of Louisiana for 40 years and last year was the first year we ever had to evacuate due to a hurricane. I"m aware that the trend is we're due to have fiercer, more frequent storms but I'm determined to just load up the mobile home and treat it like a camping trip...for the children's sake.
And I'm really hoping we have another 40 good years...or more.
I really appreciate those offers of Virginia basements (I've had a few ) and other homes throughout the country. This place is a wonderful community.
