Charlotte,
A good shade-loving plant is bleeding hearts. They might work well for your good shepherd garden. |

Theresa,
I saw bleeding hearts for the first time ever on Holy Thursday on a field trip to the Franciscan Monastery in DC. The gardens there are fantastic! And the bleeding hearts are amazing looking little flowers.

I just thought I'd mention a post about the Dover coloring books we will use to fill out the children's new garden notebooks.
Garden Flowers and Language of Flowers are two great titles with lots of pages of Mary flowers represented.

I'm sorry I keep linking to my blog, but I just posted about a pretty little flower of Mary's, the Harebell, also known as Our Lady's Thimble. I am just loving learning about the legends behind all the flowers special to our Lady.

I posted more Mary's flowers at my blog today. I am having so much fun discovering the honored names behind common plants ... for example, I was quite surprised to learn ferns are known as Our Lady's Hair.

I'm trying to add to our Mary Garden using xeriscape plants (drought tolerant) but my options seem to be limited. The plants with marian names I've identified so far are daylilies, lilacs, iris, sunflowers, clematis, columbines, & daffodils. In the fall I may add wild roses.
Any other ideas?

I'm glad you brought up Xeriscape Mary gardening since it is something a lot of us Westerners have to consider.
Consider this quote from the Mary's Flowers book - "It is thought that at one time all flowers and plants honored Mary, 'The Flower of Flowers,' in legend or in name." I look at it as nearly every flower that exists has some religious name or connection, so I would start with the Xeriscape flowers and see if I could find a Marian or other religious connection that has been recorded.
Starting with a Xeriscape list from Colorado Extension office I came up with these connections.
Sample of Xeriscape flowers:
Sweet William - Mary's Tuft
Aster - Mary's Star
Beebalm - Sweet Mary
Delphinium/Larkspur - Mary's Tears
Fireweed - Mary's Bedstraw
Lavendar - Flight into Egypt or Mary's Drying Plant
Lupine - Flight into Egypt
Peony - Our Lady's Roses
Penstemon - St Joseph's Staff
Cornflower - Mary's Crown
Plains Coreopsis - Christ's Eye
Phlox - Christ's Cross
Scabiosa - Our Lady's Pincushion
Black-eyed Susan - Golden Jeruselum
Sedum - Our Lady's Frills
Oriental Poppy - Crucifixion Blood Drops
Viola - Our Lady's Delight/Trinity Flower
Yucca - Ivory Tower
The Mary Garden's website has a section listing 200 Flowers, Shrubs, & Trees for Sunny Mary Gardens which has plants that would be considered Xerscape although they aren't labeled as such.

Mary,
Thanks for the list! I've always wanted to plant Peonies (Mary's Rose) but never thought I could in our climate. Well, the garden store had them on sale this past weekend and we now have three Mary's Roses in our garden!
We prayed over them and blessed them last night with Holy Water. (Our two year old got a little carried away and poured the whole liter out! ) When we went out to water them today they had bloomed!
I also ordered some xeric shrub and climbing roses from High Country Gardens. They should be arriving this week!
Now I need to find a way to keep the dog from digging them up!

Has anyone tried planting Job's Tears in their Marian Gardens so that the children can harvest the seeds to make rosary beads?
It is very easy to grow - I had enough seeds to make twenty rosary beads from my last harvest.
The children then can learn to make rosary beads and maybe they would delight in the opportunity to donate them to associations that give them to the poor so it becomes an activity and a little apostolate for them.
My marian garden is such need of inspiration (the chickens have a field day!) I will check out all the links and blogs posted - Thanks.
