Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am so excited to let you know about an opportunity this summer (July 6-7) in Denver. It's a nice central location, airport hub, beautiful location to visit any time of year (especially summer), lots to do for families, and we are going to be having a Catholic homeschool conference featuring some of our awesome 4 Real contributors.

The 2012 Rocky Mountain Catholic Home Educators Conference will be featuring guest speakers who you all are very familiar with and I know you would love to meet!

Jen Mackintosh (mackfam) and Jennifer Miller (JennGM)

Jen's topics:
** A Living Education using Charlotte Mason's methods
** Nurturing Wonder in Early Childhood: Montessori Education in the Home
**Organization of the Day - A Mother's Rule of Love seeking Harmony

Jenn's topic:
**Domestic Church: Living the Liturgical Year

The conference
Friday, July 6th 3-8PM
Saturday, July 7th 8-4:30 PM

We are hoping to also offer a couple hour workshop on Friday from 1-3 PM that focuses on living books education in the style of 4 Real. It would be a brainstorming, question & answer time with these ladies facilitating. While not on the offical speaking docket, Suzanne G will also be attending and offering her insigght and Charlotte Mason wisdom in the group discussions and brainstorming.

If you can swing a visit to the lovely Rocky Mountains, either as a Mom's get-away for rejuvenation or a family vacation, we would love to have you. More details will be available on our website this weekend (it is not yet complete). Do note the lodging page. We got a great rate at the nearby hotel considering it is a popular July weekend. Reservations at this rate need to be made by June 6th.

I'll share more later but wanted everyone to know as you make summer plans.

I feel your frustration Jodie . My oldest dd is heading to a girl's leadership week long camp that same weekend. It's the first time she'll be gone so long by herself; needless to say I'm a little nervous

Ladies your topics sound wonderful!!

Nurturing Wonder in Early Childhood – Jen Mackintosh

G.K. Chesterton said, "What was wonderful about childhood is that anything in it was a wonder." As home educators, one of our greatest blessings is to be at home to nurture these wonder-filled years. Wonder doesn't come in a box, nor can it be purchased. It lives in the quiet parts of the day and can often be crowded out by too much structure. Enjoy learning how some of Maria Montessori's ideas can work very naturally in the home and assist the home educating mom in nurturing an atmosphere of wonder in her home.

It’s Like Breathing: How to Live the Liturgical Year so it becomes Second Nature to your Family – Jennifer Miller

Uniting each Domestic Church with the Church’s Liturgy, particularly through the Liturgical Year, is a universal call for every Catholic family. Living the Liturgical Year does not need to be complicated or over-contrived, but should develop organically, reflecting your individual family’s needs. Learn ways to live the Liturgical Year so that it flows naturally and becomes second nature to your family’s daily life.

Organization of the Day: A Mother's Gentle Rule of Love – Jen Mackintosh

In tending to the day, mothers are called to extraordinary juggling, organization, balance and virtue within the very ordinary parts of the day. As the heart of the home, mothers tackle all the little things that come out of the woodwork in her day - some anticipated, and some not. A Mother's gentle rule finds its answer in love, for St. Paul tells us, "above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony." Find ideas for managing the day in ways that seek a balance of flexibility coupled with organization and rhythm, with love binding all the parts of the day so that there might be a joyful, pleasing harmony. Think of it as a rule....with very wide margins.

A Living Education using Charlotte Mason's Philosophy & Methods – Jen Mackintosh

Most of us have heard of Charlotte Mason, but what is the foundation of her philosophy of education? Does it go beyond nature study and watercolor painting? Yes! Understanding and embracing this philosophy of living education requires a significant shift in approach, and this shift can be liberating and sometimes intimidating. Can we really let go of all the "school in a box" tools we may have grown up with? Yes! Uncover the very efficient methods that Charlotte Mason gives and open your eyes to a wide and
can best contemplate God. It does not really matter what curriculum you use as long as you can keep that sense of wonder going so that the kids keep asking questions and never want to stop learning.

OK, did anyone go to the Sacred Music in the Home talk by Charles Nolen?? He and his wife Virginia are dear friends from Memphis, and I sang in his choir for three years while we lived there.

Not that I wouldn't have wanted to hear everyone else, but now that I know that Charles gave a presentation, too, I'm really weeping that I didn't opt for a trip to CO!

Yes, Jenn did and she LOVED it! I'm sure she will chime in when she can after getting home. As coordinator, I popped in and out of sessions but couldn't sit through any in full unfortunately. What I did hear of his was very good.

And Virginia had told me right after they moved here that she knew you - I had mentioned that I was on 4 Real and she knew you were a member here too.

Yes, we wish you would have opted for a trip out here as well...It was wonderful. Unfortunately other than Jen, Jenn and Suzanne though there weren't any other 4 Real members who weren't from Colorado - wish more could have attended. Jen and Jenn are amazing speakers and we did a pre-conference workshop with Jen, Jenn, and Suzanne talking for a couple hours in a question & answer and round table discussion on the topic of CM/ Living Books education - nuts and bolts. I heard so many great comments about it. (I don't really get to attend anything. )

I did attend, and it was fantastic! He is wonderful!!!!!

There are recordings from the conference that you can purchase. I bought his talk, and there are a few other ones I want to go back and get.

The whole conference was fabulous. This really was my favorite conference I've ever attended, and not because I gave a talk. I just think this is one of the best I've attended. There was such cohesiveness in all the talks and presenters, but the talks also were expanded from just the usual Catholic homeschool themes. There was less stress on check the box attitudes.

Martin Cothran from Memoria Press was the main speaker, and his talks were really wonderful, too.

And Jen's -- standing room only. Her talks were worth the price of admission. So practical and realistic -- such a gift!

I learned how to incorporate stamp collecting at home in such ways that really extend our learning. They were such simple ideas, but brilliant. I cannot wait to unfold that for my boys.

What I really loved is the personal touch -- meals were offered, prizes given away, and there was just a lot of time to talk with fellow homeschoolers.

Anyway, Mary did an EXCELLENT job putting together this conference. And it was wonderful meeting new and old faces.

This is the company that does our recordings - NCRS. They haven't upload the info for this year's conference yet but that should be available within a few days.

I also just uploaded the handouts from the conference on our website.

Oh, how I wish I could have been there! Not only do Jen and Jenn's talks look wonderful, but the one on teaching science from a Catholic perspective looks (from the Powerpoint)like it was great (and SO needed!).

All of the talks look so good! How hard it must have been to pick which session to attend each time! The science one does look great! I'm thinking of purchasing a few talks including Jen's and Jenn's - I guess I need to just order the whole set! :)

It was really hard to choose which ones to attend. I always had to compromise. And I missed the Journey North one done by Gwen (Momwise). Even the vendor talks were fabulous!

Let us know when the recordings are uploaded! In a Catholic homeschooler version of "6 degrees", I moved to Sally's hometown after Sally left, and I know the Nolens, too (well, Virginia anyway.) I would have enjoyed seeing her husband's talk!

All the talks look like they were really meaty. Wishing I'd been able to make it now!

Oh, yes, I'd love to know when they're up as well. So many I want to hear.

And yes, Charles is fabulous. After we left my hometown, but while he was still there, we finagled him a couple of times to come and do choral workshops with our tiny little parish choir of six people. I'm not kidding when I say they were life-changing, in terms of our choir. So there are people here in NC mourning his departure to CO, too!

This whole conference just sounds so fantastic. I'm kicking myself. Really.

Do it again, EXACTLY LIKE THAT, next year, ok?

:)

I enjoyed myself so very much at this conference! What a blessing it was visiting with friends and meeting new ones!!

I have to echo Jenn's observation - this conference was so cohesive between the various talks. I attribute that to Mary's thoughtful planning and consideration of the speakers and topics covered.

The folks in Colorado were so welcoming and engaging, and this made for such a personable and friendly experience! It was a joy to be there!

One of my favorite things about the entire conference was the round table Q&A on CM topics. The interest was surprising and so genuine! We spent about an hour and 45 minutes doing this and honestly, it felt like we could have gone on for another couple of hours!! What a joy it was to share on topics that interested and challenged people.

And, I have to say - the session on stamp collecting and using stamps in home education was so brilliant! I learned so much I could bring home and use this year!

The conference was a blessing from beginning to end!
