Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Oh I forgot to mention that ours is a Salt water pool as well.

We have always had access to a pool. My Mum & Dad have one, so the dd older siblings got to use it every afternoon and were soon swimming like fish, just like dd does now.

But in saying all this our second eldest was crawling close to waters edge. She was right at Mums and my feet and she slipped in, no splash, no nothing. I scooped her out pretty quick- It really showed me how conscious we must be as parents and adults with children around water. ( this little one was swimming unaided the following season)

In my future dream home, I want one of these. You get the pool, with less of the safety issues.

Oooh Angi,
thats looks pretty cool. It would be very awesome..
But I like looking at my pool with the lights on at night and the water feature flowing during the day.

I can definitely see the benefits.

Don't want one - and I live in Texas. To me - I don't want the extra expense of chemicals, electricity, water and maintenance. As well as the time to take care of it. But thats me. I am looking for a neighborhood with a community pool.

I would absolutely love a pool, and we almost bought a house with one. Dh didn't want it, because that pool took up the whole backyard (it was huge, 40X30, but I loved it!) I still think about that house!

Safety concerns are valid, and I would use a combo of things that my family with pools have used: the very tall fence around the pool, pool alarm, door chimes to alert when an outside door/doorwall has been opened, and a very neat gizmo my sister had when her boys were little, a special water-sensitive alarm that gets pinned on the clothes and goes off when it gets wet. Not to mention the swim/safety lessons that she has had her dss take.

I grew up swimming every day of summer at a club, from my earliest memories all the way through high school. I cannot tell you how very much I miss being in the water. I am exceedingly self-conscious of my current self , and I only very rarely go to the local rec center's pool, and then only late at night.

Stacy,
I understand what you mean by being self conscious of current self- I am the same, and its why I like out pool at home as well.

Hugs,

Leanne

I grew up with a pool, but we don't have one here. My older children were able to swim at my parents every summer until they sold their house.

If we had the money (and I hear it's super expensive to put in a pool, at least here in San Diego), I would put in a pool for all of the reasons already listed. I would definitely have some sort of fence system. Growing up, we didn't have that at all, but I think kids listened/obeyed better back then. We were never ever alone in the backyard until maybe high school.

Good luck with your decision, Melinda!

At one point in our parenting career, our kids were on the swimteam, and so we didn't swim any other time. But after a few years we quit and started visiting the pool from time to time. With 3 teen/and nearly teen boys, the outfits drove me insame. This was coupled with the fact that one of our children was allergic to cholorine. So we put an above ground pool in with an Ecosmart system - literally no chemicals. It was an "investment", but it doesn't take long to clean at all. I was pleasantly surprised. We have had it for 6 years or so and I don't miss the public pool at all. My girls wear skirts and it is nice to sent the kids out in the summer (we live in MO). Safety reasons aren't really an issue. The kids so far have followed the rules.
Blessings,
Stephanie

When we first moved 7 years ago I didn't want a pool because I had younger kids - now I wish we had one! My youngest is 9 and we are debating if we can find a way to make it work.

I wouldn't want one.

My oldest dd almost died in a pool. (The owners truly did not realize how much of a risk they were running as their security was deficient in two different ways. In this case it was really an accident waiting to happen as ten children under six were in the immediate neighborhood. Ironically, we were just visiting a neighbor of the pool owner.) I really prefer to have a pool nearby with lifeguards supervising at all time and very high fences with good locks.

I know I may be a bit over the top, but getting my daughter out of the pool while she was not breathing..... it was a nightmare.

(Good news -- she has no long-term effects from the experience except a fear of water that took several years to get over.)

In Christ,
Deborah

I haven't read all the post here, but just thought I'd chime in and say one of the things I liked when we visited my husband's family in Brazil (and there's not much to like save the awesome food) is his uncle who is very wealthy and had a pool that used some type of copper rods (I'm thinking copper, I'll check with dh) instead of chlorine to clean the pool. The VERY little I got into the pool I liked the no chlorine aspect and it was VERY clean. Brazilians eat pizza with a fork and knife ALWAYS so if it wasn't OCD clean then they wouldn't though they may all try to kill each other on the roads.

I honestly wouldn't do a pool in my yard at this point with so many LOs and I like to be able to give them a little freedom in the backyard....masterly inactivity wouldn't happen very easily here. Plus, I'm renting and there isn't room to begin with. We have a neighborhood pool that is well kept and not over crowded once the novelty wears off for the rest of the neighborhood, so when dh or a friend is over we take advantage of it.
