Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

To me, it appears that Pope Francis's "nard" is most likely what Latin American's would call nardo - or, nardos, or varas de San José.

My daughter said it looks like the Vatican site is only being translated from Italian by an autotranslator which would mean it is taking the word nardo which is in the original and autotranslating it to spikenard. It isn't an actual translation for any varied meaning.

Another reinforcing piece of info - references on the Mary Garden pages indicate the tuberose is associated with St. Joseph.
Polianthes tuberosa    Tuberose  St. Joseph's Staff

And one article/explanation on Pope Francis coat of arms I found today does refer to it as a tuberose flower.

Here is an image of St. Joseph and infant Jesus that is from a Hispanic retablo. Flowers look more like tuberose.

Other flowers associated with St. Joseph in Mary Garden sources:
Zantedeshia aethiop.     Calla Lily    St. Joseph's Staff
Philadelphus coronaria Mock Orange   St. Joseph's Flower
Narcissus jonquilla      Jonquil   St. Joseph's Staff
Hemerocallis flava       Day Lily   St. Joseph's Lily
Leucojum vernum        Snow Flake   St. Joseph's Bells
Althea rosea Hollyhock    St. Joseph's Staff
Celosia argentia       Cockscomb    St. Joseph's Staff
Tropaeolum majus         Nasturtium St. Joseph's Flower
Muscari (gen)       Grape Hyacinth      St. Joseph's Bells

Fascinating, Mary! Lovely flowers!

Instead of having to dig it up, could you put it in a container that could be brought in?

Thank you, Mary. I was trying to figure out the same thing for the same reason. I appreciate all the research that you did.

Found another source for the tuberoses - Tennessee Tuberoses - it's all they sell. The prices are the best I've found - especially in bulk. I'm going to see if some of the ladies in our local group want to go in with me.

I don't think I ever updated that I had ordered these last year. They did well. They are lovely - such a pretty fragrance.

And something else I added to the garden last fall and are just blooming now this month in time for the feast of the archangels - Purple aster (Michaelmas daisy). Love them they are so pretty and I am so excited to have them for the feast day.

Our Michaelmas daisies are in bloom. It is so neat to have that visual. Our thoughts and discussion go immediately to St. Michael when we see them. They are in the front yard by the driveway, so every time we back out, there is the reminder!!!

And I love the color!
