Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Why lemon juice?
I am so fascinated by this whole thread!

I'm also curious why in the baking soda/vinegar approach, one uses baking soda. What are the properties of baking soda that make it good for cleaning/moisturizing the hair and scalp?

lemon juice is acidic and helps strip the chlorine residue from the hair preventing it from taking on a green hue.

I will say that the best my *hair* ever looked was when I did a regimen of washing with cheapo Suave conditioner, then finishing with vinegar. That really helped me to realize how curly it was (as opposed to big and frizzy), and it was soft and shiny. Going back to a very gentle shampoo (I splurge on the L'Oreal no-sulfate moisturizing line; used Burt's Bees for a while, but the fruit acids or something made me break out in welts -- as does vinegar, actually, which is why I tapered off using it) -- anyway, going back to a gentle shampoo routine with LOTS of conditioner has not noticeably affected that good result.

Not the cheapest route, but if I'm happy with my hair, then I'm less tempted to cut it, experiment with products, etc. And the products I do use last me a long time -- at least, the shampoo does. I can go through a big bottle of conditioner fairly fast.

I went no shampoo for a while and loved how it made my hair look and feel. My hair is extremely oily hair and I wash with shampoo everyday. Before the evening, my hair looks greasy again. The BS and vinegar allowed me to actually skip a day in between washing. The ACV worked better than the white vinegar but still leaves a strong smell. Any ideas on how to mask the vinegar smell?

I think I may have found something. I just started using an all-natural conditioner (Desert Essence), on the ends only, after I do the BS/ACV. For some reason, the vinegar smell seems less. Plus, the conditioner has been the secret to making this whole system work. Before then, I'd end up w/ greasy roots & dried-out ends the day after I washed my hair. Now I can go 3-4 days w/o treating it again.
