In another forum we were talking about budgeting... The topic of "no-poo" came up and I thought it deserved it's own thread
Truthfully, I do have a couple of questions:

Do you "no-poo" adherents have teens and husbands who are also "no-poo" users?

Do you or can you add scented oils to the vinegar rinse for a nice smell?

Is there a difference between Arm & Hammer baking soda and other brands? Is baking soda baking soda? plain and simple, no matter what the packaging?

TIA

I don't use baking soda, I just scrub with water, and occasionally, I will use conditioner on my hair.

You can just gradually cut back on how often you wash your hair, scrubbing with water on the off day in the beginning if you think you look oily. I probably scrub my hair with water and add conditioner to the ends ever 4 days or so. My hair looks better on the days I don't wash it

My husband showers daily, but I'm not sure that he uses shampoo daily. I don't think so. He wasn't using it at all for a while and looked fine, but it hasn't come up recently in conversation

We do use shampoo on the boys' hair, but we only wash their hair once a week or so. They never look oily or greasy, but they are not teens yet

I'm not completely "no-poo", but I only wash my hair once or twice a week depending on if I'm going anywhere special. Normally I just pull it up in a ponytail or loose clip. When I do wash, I use Burt's Bees. It's pricey but the bottle lasts a long time.

Not sure if this was on the other thread, but if my hair is oily and I don't have time to wash, I just use a blow dryer to dry it out a bit and go about my day.

Since I'm almost out, I might try the A&H, vinegar ideas.

I've found that brushing my hair really well right before bed distributes any accumulated oils and I wake up with ready-to-go hair (well, maybe just a quick brushing). If I don't do this the hairline looks greasy in the morning.

I really thought "no-poo" was baking soda/vinegar. Now I understand that "no-poo" is what it says it is = no shampoo.
Would you ladies say that you use this method for financial reasons or because you believe your hair looks and is healthier?

I do "no-poo" with baking soda and vinegar. My husband and son (almost 11) also use baking soda. They don't bother with the vinegar. Since they have short hair, it's no big deal, but I think that you need the ph-balance of the vinegar if you want to have any length. I have heard of people putting scent in the vinegar, but I think it would have to be REALLY strong to cover the vinegar smell, so I don't bother. I do use a conditioner afterward, because I am trying to keep my hair long, and I have a lot of breakage (had that before I started baking soda also, so it's not related). Not sure if the conditioner is really helping, but I'm hopeful. Oh, and I just use whatever's cheap - sometimes the store brand, sometimes Arm and Hammer is cheaper if it's on sale.

Ladies this is so timely for me! I was no poo for a LONG time, but my hair (oily and fine, and falls out a LOT) was always looking gross, so I went back to shampoo.
Alas, I'm still allergic to EVERYTHING in shampoo, so I NEED to go no poo. I ordered some of the "good" ACV.. something with a B?? (I'm lazy and odn't want to go upstairs)
Anyway, anyone here have fine oily hair and have LUCK w/ no poo?? I need to make this work this time!

I have been no poo several years. I wash my hair with bs and rinse with acv probably once every 5-7 days. On the other days I just rinse my hair well. I used to use this on the girls as well, but it became a hassle for me. They only have their hair washed about 2 times a week so for now I will just use the shampoo. As they get older I hope to transition them.

I buy the big bags of bs at Sam's. I think maybe they are 12lbs. I use it alot in cleaning around the house, so it is best for me this way. I buy the big gallon jugs of Bragg's acv. I find that the cheap stuff just doesn't cut it.

I have 2 plastic cups that I use in the shower. I fill the one with probably 2-4 Tbl of acv and the other I fill with probably about 1/4 c bs. When it is time to wash I fill the bs cup with water most of the way and then I swish my hand it in to dissolve it the best I can. Then I pour it over my hair and work it in. I rinse the bs out completely then I fill the cup that has acv nearly to the top and then dump it over my hair. I work it in a little and then I rinse that really well. My hair combs out so nicely. My hair has tons of body. I really can't imagine using shampoo.

I alternate between literally no-shampoo (2-3 times) and the baking soda/vinegar (once). I also only wash my hair once a week at this point. I do need to brush it thoroughly every morning and night and have a couple of days each week where I don't pull it back at all.

With that particular combination, my hair is the healthiest it has ever been, except when I was pregnant ;)

so 1 t isn't going to be enough of BS or ACV?
I have 2 peri bottles I'm using they hold just over 1c of water, and to that I've added 1t of BS in one (plus tea tree oil and lav. oil in both) and 1t of ACV (Braggs) in the other, do I need to use MORE of both??

Thanks for the help, my scalp is killing me.

What about no-poo (using baking soda and vinegar) and dandruff? Will it help or hurt? This idea is so interesting!

I think it helps, especially if dry scalp is the problem. Though, you do need to brush regularly to move the oils through the hair so they don't build up on the scalp and cause flaking.

keep in mind too that you need to be getting good oils in your diet (efa's - flax seed oil, fish oil) for your body to make the good oils for your head.

Also you really should avoid washing your hair in hot water.. it can strip the oil off as well as soap can.. warm water is gentler on your hair and scalp.

I switched to no 'poo after observing that my daughter's hair became really beautiful when she went no 'poo. She did it to train her natural curls, but the side effect was her hair became much healthier -- before she had split ends, etc. I notice my hair feels so much healthier now too -- thicker, softer, etc. though sometimes I miss the smell of my shampoo and the hubby won't go without, so I use a bit like once a month, otherwise baking soda and ACV for me. The other reason is I was doing research into shampoos and UGH all the toxic stuff they put in it!

I first made the switch when I started having itching and flaking that I thought was dandruff. I read that dandruff is a more involved skin condition, and what I (and most people) had was "scalp scurf", which can be caused by the sodium laurel/laureth sulfate found in nearly every shampoo, save some fancy natural ones. Sure enough, when I switched to baking soda, the itching and flaking disappeared.

Okay, so I have naturally frizzy hair, and things have gotten much worse the grayer that I have gotten (I started going gray in my teens and now, at 30, have a LOT of unruly, curly grays). My hair tends to be dry at the ends and somewhat oily at the scalp, with a wavy, frizzy mess in between.       I have never considered not using conditioner--in fact, for me, it has been the more, the better. If I use the cheap stuff, it looks even worse. I never brush my hair (only use a large comb) because of the waves, and I blowdry my hair straight and use a bit of frizzy-hair product on it when I want it to look nice, but I am never satisfied. When I go to the stylist (a couple times a year for a shoulder-length cut), she uses a straightening iron on it and mousse and it looks GREAT after that, but I don't have time for that every day, so I'm definitely looking for a more natural look. So do you think this could work?

I think it might work really well for you Celeste. The oily scalp is probably as much from the stripping oils as anyway. When you strip the oils, your body attempts to produce more to make up for the loss.

There will be a transition time of course while your body figures out that it doesn't need the extra oils. But it's very concievable that your scalp won't be oily and your hair healthier (less dry) from doing this.

I was pretty happy w/ no-poo for nearly a year, but then it seemed like the BS was making the ends brittle, and my scalp was getting itchy & greasy. I added a once-a-week shampoo w/ a fancy natural brand, and it got worse. Now, it seems like nothing is working. I'd like to do BS/ACV once a week, and then use just water.

Diet maybe? I haven't been eating well at all lately. I live in the desert and have very hard water. It smells heavily of chlorine, too. Anything I could reasonably sub. out for the BC?

Celeste:

My curly redhead daughter stopped using shampoo about a year ago, as part of embracing the fact that she really did have curly, not just big, frizzy, unmanageable, etc., hair. She does wash with conditioner, however -- it's not just water or ACV. Curly hair really does need the extra moisture. She uses the Tres Semme Naturals Extra Moisture conditioner (not a super-frugal purchase, but it lasts her a while), scrubbing her scalp well, combing with a wide-toothed comb while her hair is wet, and then not touching it again, unless she's going to put it up. Her hair has always been really pretty, but I would never have guessed that it could be as curly as it's turned out to be -- she has fairly tight ringlets all over. (I should post a "before-embracing-curliness" photo of her, and an "after" -- the difference is pretty dramatic!).

I did no-shampoo for most of last summer and into the fall, but my scalp really suffered with seborrheic dermatitis (a.k.a. dandruff that flaked off and left sores), despite my scrubbing it well, finishing with vinegar, etc. Even after my body had adjusted so that my hair never looked greasy, my skin couldn't cope with the natural oils. I now use a sulfate-free shampoo 2-3x/week with the same Tres Semme conditioner my daughter uses. My hair isn't quite as curly as hers, but with generous conditioning and no brushing, it's a lot curlier than I thought it was. And going days between washings doesn't seem to bother my scalp so long as it is getting shampooed gently at intervals.

I never liked the way baking soda made my hair feel. And like my daughter (and you), with curly-ish hair I need the extra moisture of a conditioner. On hair-wash days, when I let it dry and then don't comb it again, it's really curly -- on subsequent days I spritz it with a spray bottle of water mixed with a tiny bit of conditioner, comb, and let dry again. Then I don't comb it at all (unless I'm going to put it up). That way the curls stay curls and don't get diffused into frizz. I don't have my daughter's fab ringlets, but I'm really happy with my more gently-curly hair. I don't even think of it as "unmanageable" any more, which is a huge paradigm shift for me!

Anyway, you might consider just combing your hair while it's wet and then not touching it -- with a generous amount of conditioner (whether you use shampoo or not) and leaving it alone, it might surprise you with some nice curls.

Sally

I too use the conditioner only method, I have been conditioner only since we first "talked" about it here on these boards. When I first started I would sometimes add some brown sugar to the conditioner to give my scalp a good scrub. Also, after I swim I mix in some lemon juice. People are always surprised, in a good way , well I tell them I just use conditioner.
