Also, what about Caddie Woodlawn? I haven't read it, but my dd loves it. Isn't it similar to the Little House books? |

I just finished Caddie last week...read it as a girl long ago, and we all just finished reading it separately. I thought about adding it to the list because it IS one of my all-time-favorite girl-books. But, I hesitated b/c I wasn't quite sure I'd put it in this category:

I'm especially looking for those that model a good family life, happy families, everyone pitching in, cheerful and getting along with family members. |

They TOTALLY have a good family life, but it's more courageous adventures and funny things happening. She's very brave does the right thing, no matter how difficult or scary. But, it's a totally different book than the family-who-works-together-to-persevere that you read in the Charlotte Tucker books or Five Little Peppers.
I hesitated to put The Saturdays in this category for the same reason, but I love how The Saturdays siblings get along, converse, encourage each other and have fun.

I think it's a good way to expand the category of my needs. Having siblings work together and getting along is also very key. I actually remember myself reading different stories and being struck by siblings who argue and then make up -- they were very real, and totally an imitation of real life of what I knew.
And I had to add Gone-Away books because while it's not all siblings, it still illustrates working together.
And I don't think it has to be all "happy family", although even without parents and with hardships a child and the family can be happy. That's some of the lessons taught by these living books.

I am just piping in to say that if you have never read any of The Moffat books... treat yourself!
I think it is one of my very favorite series... because it's funny and real and very family-oriented. And full of Characters... like the Oldest Inhabitant.
I'm giving it
I am currently reading The Peterkin Papers aloud to my dc, and it's OK, but I would rather be reading the Moffats again.

In your "little bit older list" don't forget The Story of The Trapp Family Singers. And my teen daughter loves The Family Nobody Wanted. (The true story of an adoptive family during WWII.)
