Meant to answer this - yes we did look at some of the bacteria under the microscope. I didn't have the materials to do the staining, but we did take samples from a couple colonies and mix it in sterile water in test tubes. Then placed a drop on the slides. I really didn't think we would see much without the staining or that it would still be too small for viewing. But it was pretty amazing. Doing it in this manner we were able to see lots of bacteria moving around on the slide. It really illustrates the volume of these microscopic organisms from a sample the size of a tip of a toothpick.
