No I think they gave us a clue of his innocence. The woman Anna was speaking to made a comment that Vera was scrubbing the pastry from under her nails like her life depended on it (or something to that effect). It made me think that Vera had put arsenic in the pastry and perhaps she had actually intended it for Bates. |

This and the facts that in season 1 the talk that Vera had with Sir Richard about how she would make Bates pay. Makes me think she was mad enough to take her own life and set it up as if Bates did it.
Loved the dress! I did see that she was looking more forward to taking care of him instead of true love. I think she is just looking for a purpose in life. I cried for her! Can't wait until next week! |

I do think the writing is a bit predictable. Both DH and I knew the letter would have that kind of info to save Downton. That part made Mary like a nag, though. Give your husband some time to think it over, for goodness sake! At least let him sleep on it!
So as far as Bates, we think the writing is trying to make us think he's guilty, but there will be some story that will make him not. Like Michele said, I thought that fingernail scrubbing was a big clue.
Anna is empathetic, so she can feel from all sides, and I don't think she'll have doubts, but understand how Vera could have been loved, and how Bates might have loved her at some time.
As far as Lady Edith's dress, I thought it had more curves, less drop waist and so beautiful. That is the type of fabric I had for my dress -- a silk satin.

Oh you guys are so tricky!!!!! I didn’t catch that about scrubbing her nails!!! There was a lot of noise at that point in my house...no one listened when I deemed the hour between 9p-10p were to be strictly silent!! So....I’ve changed my mind, so sorry, Bates!

Sunday evening is "girl tv time" in our house. Sunday night football does not stand a chance. I make sure dinner and rosary and baths are completed VERY early so that 9-10 is quiet time.
My daughter has youth ministry earlier in the evening - and everyone thinks it is funny that she rushes home to watch DA with her mom.
DD is also sewing a Lady Mary dress for "homeschool prom" - it is a deep red one with black lace from last season I think.

I think my kids came down to say good night during the scene in which Anna interviews Vera's neighbor. Missed the part about scrubbing her nails!
I wish my eldest girl were old enough for Downton, but at 12 I think a show like Lark Rise would be better for her.
Edith looked absolutely radiant in her wedding gown - the sheen of the dress, the lighting, the neckline not so high - I was so happy for her, and happy that her sisters were happy for her. She would have been FINE with Sir Anthony. Poor, poor Edith!

ETA: SPOILER POSSIBILITY
Oops! Sorry!
Loved Edith's gown much more than Mary's!

Lara,
I added the spoiler possibility alert above. I recently read an article about all the information out there in the media. Since the series has already aired, if you are a follower and reading online about it, there is a lot of information you can run across without trying, that will give away plot and character info. This is the case here - do you really want to know?

So sorry about that! I wasn't even thinking about being a spoiler! Thanks for the heads up!

So, any interesting developments to chat about? This week's episode seemed to be a sort of pause with nothing so very dramatic happening aside from Tom/Sybil.
I finally got caught up, and in revisiting the whole wedding gown thing, there did seem to be something of a Grecco-Roman influence, especially with Lady Mary's.
I actually loved the bit about the toaster! Very cute side plot!
And I wonder if Lady Mary isn't interested in being pregnant so soon or if she's upset because she isn't yet and doesn't want to let on.

I think she is upset/disappointed she isn't. She is so dire all the time so you can't tell.
She is the most traditional. I think she is all about having heirs - so I would imagine she wants a baby soon. It's sad that it is obviously something they really can't talk about in that time period. Very private between a woman and her doctor, it seems. Matthew had to surmiss from her having visited the doctor that might be pregnant and ask (in a couched, roundabout way). Similar when Cora was pregnant. Doctor visits, then husband is informed.
Anyone else concerned about the new footman, Jimmy? I feel like they are going to take this into some kind of situation with Thomas - please, no...

I agree with all of this! Only thing to add is that it looks like Matthew is thinking about opening a big 'ole can of worms after taking a look at the books.
Does anyone know how many episodes there will be this season?

From the preview for next week (are we allowed to talk about that) I think the new footman/Thomas situation will be awkward , but my impression from this week is that it is O'Brien getting back at Thomas by putting the idea in his head to pursue something that isn't there.

I agree with you, Mary, about Lady Mary. I took it as her being disappointed that she wasn't pregnant and trying to keep a stiff upper lip, which came off as being abrupt.
What steamed me, really, about this episode was how Charlie's grandfather knew- KNEW- what Ethel was having to do to support them both and never stepped in with an offer of help. What the heck???
As Miss Cornelia (from Anne's House of Dreams) would say, "Isn't that just like a man?".
Really- so sad. And still she gave her son up to him. Let;s hope the grandmother is a little more sympathetic.

Oh, good to be doubly affirmed. It was what I thought when I saw the scene, but then I read a review where someone read it completely the otter way, and I thought maybe I was the only one!

A little worried about where they are taking the whole “Thomas” thing and the new footman....ugh. I hope it is nipped in the bud and not a big deal, otherwise, if that is a big side plot it will ruin it for me. I LOVE Dame Maggie Smith...how does she do it?? Her and Judi Dench are just it for me in British acting.....amazing. I loved Judi Dench in Cranford...they seem like such classy ladies, we need more of them.

I saw something about a petition to get Dame Judi Dench to do a guest appearance on Downton- wouldn't that be fun?
I still love her in the "As Time Goes By Series".

Yes - there's a FB page to vote for Judi Dench. Oh, wouldn't Judi and Julia Sawalha make a perfect mother/daughter pair?
I didn't see Skyfall or the something or other Marigold Hotel, but loved Dench in Ladies in Lavender, Pride & Prejudice, A Room with a View, Henry V, Midsummer Night's Dream, Angelina Ballerina, etc. All of the great British actors are rooted in Shakespeare!

Just finished reading The Chronicles of Downton Abbey.
I was afraid it would have spoilers, but it really didn't. There were just a couple of pictures that were farther down the series than episode 3.
Anyway- it was a good read. It explained a lot about what was happening politically at the time in Ireland. Rough times
I was surprised my library had this one already, but it did

I guess everyone is still shaken up over the episode to comment. I wasn't expecting that!

I was shocked.....just....shocked!!! I had pre-eclampsia and just felt sick as I watched it all evolve....it was so, so real. I kept thinking, “surely they’ll have a dramatic save or something!”
